USING SIMPLE MACHINES TO DO
A WHOLE LOT OF…...
To apply and demonstrate your knowledge of simple machines
To work on a team, both in, and out of school in developing creative “Rubes”
To apply brainstorming and troubleshooting techniques in “Rube” development.
Rube Goldberg (1883-1970) was a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, sculptor, and author.
He observed that a great number of people do things the hard way!!!
Using each of the six simple machines (at least once), develop a “Rube” that, in a safe and entertaining fashion……..

Name the device & create a slogan: 5 points Use PROPERLY and describe each simple
machine and its function: 5 points each (x6) Calculate the IMA of each of the six simple

If you are going to bring it physically into school – you must be able to carry it yourself (IOW not too big…)
If you are going to bring it physically into school – you must remove it from this room on the same day you bring it in
If you video – I need to be able to see all of the working parts. Show it, explain it, re show it…
If you video – you can (must) verbally label parts. MAs should be on a separate paper.

Is this a group project? Yes or no, you choose. You can work alone, with one
partner or with two. Group size CAN NOT exceed three persons. I MUST know your group by Wednesday!
Can I work with “anyone”? Yes, if they are on THIS team…It’s not by class period.
Do we get class time to do it? No, this is an at-home, fun oriented, problem solving
endeavor. PLAN AHEAD!!
Where do I get the materials?
Garages, attics, cellars, closets. Be creative. Avoid spending money. Cool Rubes are not bought….ask if you need help…
My folks will kill me, they don’t like projects.
