Chris Chianelli Introduces Pro•pulse

Congratulations! You have just purchased a radio controlled Pro•Pulse high performance radio-controlled vehicle. This vehicle comes ready to compete right out of the box, loaded with serious full-race competition features. Turn any parking lot into your own race track!

If you are new to racing, here are some tips that I’ve learned over the years to help you get the most out of your new Pro•Pulse vehicle:

Don’t crash. Steer clear of trouble!About 50% of all crashes are a result of someone else’s terrible driving! Go around it! If you see a traffic jam or someone driving erratically, steer clear of them to avoid getting yourself into trouble.

Know your trackGet to know the track and it’s surface. Learn which tires to use when it’s wet and which to use when it’s dry and dusty. Find out which gearing works best. Know what works and what doesn’t. Don’t try to be the fastest car on the trackBe consistent. The smoothest driver usually wins the race. Erratic driving only leads to crashes. Arrive preparedBring different sets of tires. If it’s damp, dry or dusty, know ahead of time which tires will. Have 3 sets of shocks on hand, each loaded with different viscosities of oil. Make sure you have a well-equipped field box with all the spare parts and tools you need: glue, hardware and spare parts, etc.

“Remember Pro•Pulse is all about having fun!”

--Chris Chianelli

When racing, ask Questions--Don’t be shy!Other experienced racers are a great resource of knowledge. Ask them what they do and try to benefit from their experience. You’ll be surprised how willing they are to share their secrets! Practice! Practice! Practice! When they say practice makes perfect, they mean it! If you want to master the track and win races, practice on it as much as you can. Get to know every turn, dip and jump! Keep a clean machineKeep your vehicle well maintained and in good, clean condition. This will ensure that your vehicle continues to perform well race after race.

Stay cool - It’s about having funAlways be courteous. Observe local track etiquette. Treat others with respect and as you would want to be treated.

Transmitter

Street / Race / Slow Switch Many races do not allow using reverse during the race, you must switch to Race mode. Race mode is Forward and Brake; Street mode is Forward, Brake ,and Reverse. You also have to switch the ESC on the chassis from Street to Racing as well. Slow is a good setting when you are learning how to drive.

When racing with others, you will need to operate on a different transmitting frequency. See Specifications on page 30 for the 6 frequencies your vehicle supports. You can identify your frequency by looking at the transmitter frequency label on the transmitter.

Your Pro•Pulse vehicle can be customized to enhance speed and performance. Simple adjustments and easily maintained settings will assure optimum operation and performance. When making adjustments, do so only in small increments and always check for other parts of the vehicle that are affected.

Toe-in & Toe-out

Toe-in

Using the components in the steering upgrade kit (not included), adjusting the “Toe” of the front tires can have a dramatic effect on your vehicle’s steering and handling characteristics. A toe-in set up is good for the beginner to start because it tends to make the vehicle track in a straight line, but also makes the steering less responsive around center (see the Driving section on page 20 for more about turning).

An exaggerated example of toe-in:

Toe-out

Toe-out, can make a vehicle’s steering very responsive around center, depending on the degree of adjustment, it can make the steering extremely responsive to the point of making it difficult to drive for the newcomer. Some experienced racers, however, will set their racing vehicle up with a touch of toe-out for a more sensitive feel on tight courses with lots of tight turns and hairpin turns.

An exaggerated example of toe-out:

Zero Toe

An example of zero-degrees of toe. In this case the centerline of the tires is exactly parallel.

Camber

Camber can be adjusted on all four wheels using the optional steering upgrade kit. While many off-road racers do set-up their vehicles with a bit of positive camber on two and sometime all four wheels, there are many opinions as to the correct amount of camber adjustments needed. So many factors come into play like driving style, and track conditions, tire choice and so forth. Since camber adjustments help keep the tire perpendicular in turns and this set up can be accomplished in seconds with the upper-link turnbuckles accessory option (see Catalog on page 26). This cool feature requires no disassembly at all, so it can be done on the fly!

Positive camber

An exaggerated example of positive camber:

Negative Camber

An exaggerated example of negative camber:

Zero Camber

An example of zero degrees of camber. In this case, the tire centers are perpendicular to the road.

Both the toe and camber adjustments are easy to do with the ProPulse 60-9512 Servo Saver and Tie Rod Steering Kit. Adjustments can be made in seconds to the sterring rods without disassembly. See the accessory Catalog section on page 26 for ordering information.

Spur and Pinion Gear Adjustments

For more torque use your stock pinion gear and the 54T spur gear. For more speed, use the 15T pinion gear and 53T spur gear. With the 60-9515 Spur Gear and Pinion Gear upgrade kit, you can setup gear ratios using any combination of the 13, 14 and 15 tooth pinion gear and the 53 or 54 tooth spur gear. Detailed instructions are included with the kit.

Tight Gear mesh

Page 8: USER’S GUIDE - chaffeedesigns.comchaffeedesigns.com/samples/RadioShack/Pro-Pulse_Starter_Kit_UG.pdf · pitcrew@megatech.com 10:00am - 4:00pm, EST everyday except holidays Technical

1 www.ProPulse.com 1

Create a Clean Gear Mesh

Obtaining a proper gear-mesh between the pinion gear and spur gear is of paramount importance for the optimum performance and to prolong spur gear life. If the gear mesh (mesh is described as the “fit” between two gears) is too loose the gears will slip, teeth on the gears (especially the spur gear) will either become ground down or may even chip off entirely. If your gear mesh is adjusted too tightly the gears will bind causing too much drag and possibly overheating the motor. If your vehicle is making a crunching sound, the mesh between your motor pinion gear and your drivetrain’s spur gear may not be clean. Complete the following steps to create a clean mesh.

1. Loosen the top motor mount screw so that you can rotate the pinion gear attached to the motor away from the spur gear.

2. Rotate the motor so that the pinion gear moves away from the spur gear. You may have to use a standard screwdriver to gently move it away from the spur gear in the motor mount recess. Check for grains of sand and dirt around the pinion gear. Used compressed air to blow it out.

3. Press the motor towards the spur gear and gently roll chassis to verify a proper mesh has been created. You will know a proper mesh is created because it will roll smoothly and almost without sound.

4. Tighten the motor mount screw.

Race and Street Mode

In order to race at many of your local tracks, you will need to change your Pro•Pulse vehicle’s driving mode from the default Street mode to Race mode. To do change the setting, you must change the switch on both the chassis and the transmitter to Race mode.

Add Oil to Shocks

If your vehicle bounces too much, you may need to add oil to the shocks. To add oil, remove the vehicle body top, turn off vehicle, and unplug battery. Remove shock cap and add silicone shock oil to the rim of the shock body. Gently move the shaft up and down to remove any air, (you may need to add more oil) then replace the cap. See the accessory Catalog section on page 26 for information on the aluminum shock upgrades and performance silicone oil.

Change Truck Body Top Height

To adjust the truck body top height for greater clearance:

Remove the truck body top, turn off the vehicle, and unplug the battery. Adjust the body mount pegs (make sure to adjust all of the pegs to the same height).

Adjust Chassis Ride Height

Adjust the ride height based on conditions. A higher ride allows for more ground clearance and chassis vertical movement. This setting is great for off road racing and jumping. A lower ride height allows for more control and tighter turning, which is great for street racing.

To adjust the ride height and create a stiffer ride, insert the included spacers into the shock towers.

To change the ride height without changing spacers, move the ball joints to the inner mount locations or increase the stiffness of the suspension:

Tighten or Loosen the Differential

Another way you can adjust the handling of your Pro•Pulse vehicle is to tune your differential adjustment. Right out of the box, your vehicle differential adjusment is set with minimal slippage. However, as you become more proficient at driving, you may want to adjust this setting. Note that the downside of having a looser differential is that you have more slippage. As tigher differential or locked differential will leave a larger turning radius.

Complete the following to adjust the differentials:

1. Turn off your vehicle and unplug the battery, then remove the wheels and dogbones:

2. To tighten the differential adjustment, use the allen wrench that came with your starter kit, turn the screw to the right to tighten and to the left to loosen. You may need to brace wheels to keep them from spinning while you make the adjustment.

Must-Have Tool Box Items

Below is a list of tools and other items that you should keep in your tool box to help make your day at the race track run smoothly:

• Safety glasses • Motor Spray• 2-Phillips-head screw drivers (small & medium) • 2-flat-head screw drivers (small and medium) • Needle-nose pliers • Regular pliers • 4-way nut-driver • Lightweight racing oil • CA type glue (thin) • Spare rechargeable AA batteries • Chassis cleaner spray • Paper towels• Tool Box to hold your stuff• Toothbrush for cleaning• Compressed air

Motor Upgrades

As your driving improves you will want to experiment with more power. Your first motor upgrade should be faster than stock, but still easy to drive. Modified motors are rated by the number of turns and strands. For example, you may hear someone talk about a “28-turn triple,” which has three strands wrapped twenty eight times around each pole of the armature. Other things being equal a motor with fewer turns draws more current, has more no-load RPMs, and produces more power.

The Pro•Pulse 60-9507 High Speed Modified Motor upgrade has fewer turns than the stock motor, is “no-load” for faster but consistent response time and is an excellent choice for your first foray into the modified motor racing category.

Importance of Tires

Tires are the biggest factor in how your vehicle handles, so install upgrade tires based on what kind of track you want to race. It is always a good idea to watch what the locals use and follow their lead. For a more compact dirt track, try the ribbed tires (60-9501 pre-mounted on rims or 60-9531 tires only). Or, if you are mostly racing on concrete or pavement, the slicks are definitely the best option (60-9504 or 60-9534).

If you haven’t already, you will soon learn that the fastest way around a race track is not as the crow flies, and that you’ll never take a turn the same way twice.

As with all racing, how you approach and exit each corner is what will make or break your chances in crossing the finish line first and, of course, it is the hardest thing to master. Every track, whether it is indoor or outdoor, dirt or pavement, offers many ways of getting around the turn and the other vehicle.

What are the track regulars doing?

Especially when at an unfamiliar track, watch the locals. First, find a driver who has a vehicle similar to yours and check out the tires. Do you have to make a pre-race change? Then take note of the track material. If a dirt track, is it clumpy or packed, is it dry or moist from all of those nitro guys leaking fuel and oil? Then most importantly, watch how other drivers approach each turn. How do they enter and exit each corner?

Make sure not to take their driving as gospel truth though. Once you see what they are doing, you may find a better way to take the turn. They may be going higher up on corners and getting bogged down. Winning is all about maintaining traction and direction, regardless of the track material.

The Hairpin and Keyhole

A hairpin, or keyhole (think of a keyhole as a large hairpin), turn is a hard right or left that sends you back in the other direction. Of course, the best way to take it is high, and then turn at the peak of the turn so you properly align your car to throttle it hard in the other direction. Unless you are ten car lengths ahead, it is never that easy; most of the time you’ll be battling for position as you enter a turn. Find an opening as close to the inside pole as possible, then exit the turn wide while throttling—be ready on the wheel because you’ll have to straighten your vehicle as you accelerate.

If the turn is too crowded, your best approach may be wide and through the whole turn and avoid the mess and accelerate once you have a straight line. Make sure not to go too wide on a large hairpin or keyhole or you may find yourself bogged down in the rough.

The Chicane

A chicane is what some would call a “dog-leg” turn. The best way to approach one is right down the middle; treat it like a straightaway with “funny walls,” but make sure you are truly clear of the sides. It is better to be conservative and drive slower, especially if you can’t see how close you are to the wall. The guy next to you would love to hang you up on the turn with some “love-tapping chicanery” and knock you out of rhythm.

Other Challenges

Particularly on off-road tracks, there is the added dimension of jumps. If you are three feet in the air, you can’t use your “text-book hairpin turn methods.” Don’t panic. If you know you are going to land at the entrance of a turn, then you want to be ready to take your car in the opposite direction by turning your wheels as you fly.

Or, you may want to slow way down and minimize the jump to keep your traction. You may not produce a spectacular flying leap like your nemesis in the purple buggy, but you will be several car lengths ahead. Style points only count in dog shows and beauty pageants.

If you landed poorly jumping from one spot, try another spot the next time around. As for those pesky berms –mounds of dirt or boards—use them to your advantage. Often, they can be more effective than braking!

You may never be able to take the same corner the same way during an entire race day, let alone an entire race, so most importantly, be flexible and don’t force it. Make adjustments during the race, and be consistent in your racing goals.

Remember, race against gravity, friction, and the track. The other cars are just in your way.

Why is the vehicle going backward instead of forward?

• Check to see if the transmitter Throttle Reverse switch is in the wrong position.• If you’ve recently worked on the drivetrain, the differential gears are not keyed, so verify that you didn’t install them in reverse.• Check that the motor wires are connected red to red and black to black with the ESC.

Why is my motor not working?

• Verify that all of the wires are correctly installed and haven’t become loose including the wires from the ESC, motor, receiver, and battery.• Make sure your battery is properly connected and that it is fully charged.• If you’ve been racing your vehicle hard for a long period of time, then your motor may have overheated. Unplug the battery and stop using your vehicle. If this condition persists, then you may need to replace your motor.

My shocks are bouncy. How do I fix them?

• Add oil to them. See Add Oil to Shocks on page 15 for more details.

Why are there clicking or crunching noises coming from the vehicle?

• Your spur gear may have a chipped tooth. See Create a Clean Mesh on page 14 for more information about gearing and gear mesh.• There may be sand or grit in the gearing. You may want to clean your drivetrain with a toothbrush and motor spray. See Spur and Pinion Gear Adjustments on page 13.

Why is my transmitter not working?

• Verify that the batteries are fully charged.• Stand closer to the vehicle.• Make sure no one else is using your frequency. See pages 8-9 and 30 for Transmitter specifications.

Why do the wheels spin on the chassis even when I don’t touch the Transmitter?

• You may need to adjust the throttle trim. See page 8-9 for more information on Transmitter trim adjustments.• There might be interference from another radio on the same frequency or some other influencing source.

Why doesn’t my battery hold a charge?

• You may need a new battery. See Catalog page 26 for accessory and part ordering information.

Can I make my vehicle turn tighter through the corners?

• Make sure nothing is blocking the steering wheel.• Check the dual rate adjustment.• Make custom adjustments for toe-in and camber with the steering upgrade kit (see page 26).

Why can’t my vehicle go in reverse?

• Make sure the vehicle is not in race mode. See page 8 for more information.

Why won’t my vehicle go straight?

• Adjust steering trim setting. See page 8 for more information.• Check the servo saver.

Battery Notes

• Always unplug the battery from the vehicle when not in use. The power switch only turns off the ESC off and power to the receiver. • If you do not plan to use your vehicle for a week or more, remove the batteries. Batteries can leak chemicals that may damage electronic parts.• After charging the battery pack, disconnect it from the charger. Overcharging the battery pack could damage it.• Dispose of batteries promptly and properly. Do not burn or bury them.• Driving your vehicle for long periods of time generates heat, and causes wear and tear on the motor. To keep heat levels down, let your vehicle cool for about 10 minutes before installing a new battery pack.• If your vehicle moves slowly, or not at all, and you have installed a fresh battery pack, check the drive train for objects such as grass, sticks, or mud.
