Australasian Academy of Cosmetic
Dermal ScienceIf you’ve ever thought about a career in dermal therapy or cosmetic
medicine, the Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science (AACDS)
can make it a reality in a unique and practical learning environment.
AACDS is a registered training organisation
specialising in dermal therapy and cosmetic
medicine education and training including
cosmetic treatments such as laser, intense
pulsed light (IPL), superfi cial peels, skin
needling, dermal fi llers and wrinkle-relaxers.
“We deliver a range of nationally-accredited
qualifi cations available for students wanting
to start a new career in this fi eld and a
range of postgraduate qualifi cations for
students from a beauty, nursing or health
background,” AACDS Director April
Jorgensen said.
The qualifi cations AACDS deliver are
unique to the organisation and according
to Ms Jorgensen are not to be likened to a
qualifi cation in beauty therapy.
“The course curriculum is developed by a
team of cosmetic physicians and surgeons,
cosmetic nurses, dermal therapists and
allied health professionals,” she said.
As well as providing fl exible study options for
students including online and part-time study
options, AACDS has recently introduced
VET FEE-HELP to make gaining the skills for
your new career easier than ever.
Ms Jorgensen said this allowed students to
study now and pay later, once their earnings
reached a certain threshold.
To help you get a head start in the job
market, AACDS is co-joined to Western
Australia’s largest cosmetic medical practice
and day hospital meaning students will
gain real experience in a real medical
environment.
“The practical training associated with all
AACDS qualifi cations requires the use of the
latest cosmetic equipment and products,
and our training program is unique in that
we only take two students per assessor or
trainer providing students with a quality-
learning environment and exclusivity to
specialised equipment,” Ms Jorgensen said.
Visit aacds.edu.au to fi nd out more about
AACDS, and to see if you might be eligible

WA Skills Training makes converting your licence simpleWorkSafe recently made changes to the High Risk Work Licence, which
will affect people in the mining, resources and construction industries.
The changes to the WorkSafe High Risk
Work Licence took effect on April 1, when
all RII Units of Competency relating to
high-risk work changed to TLI and CPC
Licence to Operate.
This means people who hold the previous
RII Unit of Competency for the High
Risk Work Licences will still be able to
continue to use their licence; however
many employers will soon start to request
the new licence to operate as the unit of
competency for the high-risk work their
employees conduct. WA Skills Training has
made the process to convert to the new
licence to operate simple to complete via
its online training system.
After completing a simple online exercise
you will receive the new Licence to
Operate, which is recognised Australia-
wide. The online assessment costs
$75 per unit/ticket and will enable you
to update your qualifi cation to the new
Licence to Operate via a Recognition of
Current Competency (RCC).
WA Skills Training Managing Director Bob
Butson said the company also provided
other online services, with plans for more
in the near future.
“WA Skills Training are also running
the Verifi cation of Competency (VoC),
White Card and Section 44 online
via our online training system on our
webpage. Additional theory training of the
following units of competency such as
Working at Heights, Confi ned Space and
Gas Test Atmosphere will be coming online
soon,” he said.
WA Skills Training is also able to provide
an online service for those needing to
update their Mobile Plant Operator’s Ticket
(MNM or BCC) to the Current RII Unit of
Competency.
In addition to online training, WA Skills
Training offers a number of courses, from
single units to full qualifi cations.
The courses cover various topics including
risk management, occupational health
and safety, and training and assessment
in addition to specialised leadership
programs. Courses are conducted at the
training centres located in Belmont and
Bunbury and offer an effective combination
of theory and practical application.
Visit training.waskills.com for more
information or contact the Corporate
Training Centre on 9227 0999.

Clearing the air: GCG keeps worksites healthyWith more than 50 staff located in offi ces across Australia, GCG Health
Safety and Hygiene is a specialist Occupational Hygiene (OH) and
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) consultancy that works primarily
with mining and heavy industry.
The team effectively measures client
workplace stressors such as noise,
chemicals and the presence of asbestos
and then puts controls in place to ensure
client’s employees are working in safe
environments.
GCG has two labs – located in Perth and
Queensland – in which air samples taken
by fi eld staff at various client sites can be
analysed for dust and asbestos content.
In addition to providing services to clients,
GCG also conducts courses in OH and
also on the measurement and control
of hazardous substances, covering the
basics to an intermediate level.
GCG Client Development Director Dustin
Bennett said the basic OH course could
benefi t a variety of people with different
backgrounds.
“Quite a range of people sit the course,
everyone from engineers to project
managers and a lot of corporate people
do it,” he said.
Currently there are only 100 Certifi ed
Occupational Hygienists (COHs) in
Australia and GCG currently employs
seven of them to ensure students receive
the best training in addition to practical
experience.
“We are the only institution with a lab in
Perth, which students get access to,” Mr
Bennett said.
Upon passing the exam, students
graduate with a certifi cate from the
International Occupational Hygiene
Association (IOHA).
Being a niche industry there is no
Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
training available, so the Occupational
Health Training Association (OHTA) has
developed a number of packages aimed
at companies and sites.
Mr Bennett said GCG was an approved
OHTA course provider.
“We’re one of the few companies in
Australia that has that approved training
provider status,” he said.
“We’re not a RTO but we do deliver a
myriad of other OHS and hygiene training
courses, including asbestos awareness
training, respirator training to Australian
Standard 1715 and hearing protection
training, and we also train client’s internal
staff for respirator fi t testing.”
GCG currently offers training in Perth,
Brisbane, Townsville and overseas with
plans to expand within Western Australia.
“We are looking to deliver in regional areas
such as Port Hedland and Kalgoorlie,” Mr
Bennett said.
Courses start at $1980 including GST.

Start your career in the resources industryThe resources industry is once again experiencing a strong upswing in
Western Australia.
LabTech Training (LTT) Director Linda
Engledow said job seekers looking to make
a start in a laboratory operations role,
should carefully consider pursuing formal
qualifi cations to get the best start.
“Laboratories servicing the resources
industry are telling us that candidates
with a qualifi cation such as a Certifi cate
III in Laboratory Skills are looked upon
more favourably for specialised roles in
laboratories dealing with mineralogy, gold
testing or assay,” she said.
“Specialised roles have the advantage
of more defi ned career paths, with more
opportunity for advancement than many
generalist roles.
“In addition, having a nationally recognised
qualifi cation like a Certifi cate or Diploma
is the sort of thing employers look for as
evidence of skills and interest in pursuing a
career.”
The Construction and Materials Testing
(CMT) sector, servicing major infrastructure
and resource projects around Australia, is
an area with strong demand for qualifi ed
laboratory technicians. New accreditation
requirements in the CMT sector will be
applied by July 2013, making nationally
recognised qualifi cations even more
important.
Pathology, biotechnology, environmental
and food testing fi elds also have a need for
skilled and qualifi ed laboratory staff.
Responding to the demand from job
seekers and employers, LTT now provides
individual learners with further opportunities
to enter the laboratory operations industry
with nationally recognised qualifi cations
from the Laboratory Operations Training
Package (MSL09).
At LTT’s Osborne Park Training Centre,
job seekers with no previous laboratory
experience or qualifi cations can complete
the Diploma program in approximately one-
year full time.
Job Seekers with previous laboratory
experience and qualifi cations can, through
LTT’s recognition of prior learning (RPL)
pathway, enter the Diploma program at the
Certifi cate IV level, thereby completing the
Diploma in 24 weeks.
Job seeker qualifi cation programs start
approximately every six weeks so people
are advised to register soon for upcoming
programs.
Register your interest at ltt.com.au or call
1300 588 588.
Take advantage of the certifi ed skills shortageOver the past decade, the number of Western Australia’s major oil and gas,
mining and construction projects has boomed, creating a huge number of
jobs and causing a labour shortage of certifi ed welders.
“We are dealing with employers on a
daily basis that are looking for guys with
experience and qualifi cations,” co-owner
of the Australian Welding Academy (AWA)
Joanne Olsen said.
The shortage of welders created the
opportunity for talented tradespeople in
the profession to earn signifi cant money –
however, with the mining industry’s stringent
qualifi cation requirements, it has become
increasingly diffi cult to get high-paying jobs
without formal qualifi cations.
“The way the industry is heading, if you do
not have a formal relevant qualifi cation you
will miss out on the best opportunities,” Mrs
Olsen said.
“Everyone wants to get the good paying
jobs and to get them you need to have
the minimum requirements, either trade
qualifi cations – a Certifi cate III – or the coded
welder qualifi cations.”
Mrs Olsen said lots of practicing welders
didn’t realise they could get qualifi cations
without going through the arduous three-year
apprenticeship process, through the AWA’s
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program,
and it wasn’t only people without the
qualifi cations who could require the course.
“There are a lot of guys from overseas who
fi nd that their qualifi cations aren’t recognised
here and may be eligible for the RPL
process,” she said.
Mrs Olsen said getting the relevant
qualifi cations was a great idea for
tradespeople even if they didn’t currently
need them.
“It’s a relatively small investment in their future
which allows them the potential to open a
multitude of doors that without those formal
qualifi cations will remain closed to them,” she
said.
