1.0 Introduction The Sky Q app is available for tablets from the Apple App store and the Google Play Store. This manual is designed to help customers who have downloaded the app from the Apple App Store and are going to be using it with VoiceOver. The app allows you to watch live TV or Shows on demand on your tablet when you are in your home or away from home. When you are in your home, you are also able, via the Sky Q app, to watch or record programmes to your Sky Q box or download Shows on demand to your box or tablet. You are also able to download your recordings to your device. When you are away from home, you are able to download Shows on demand via Wi-Fi and watch what you have downloaded on your device. It is to be noted that not all of your box’s recordings can be downloaded to your device because of contractual agreements for certain shows. The same applies to watching live TV and watching or downloading Shows on demand when you are away from home. The main difference between streaming, downloading and recording a programme is as follows:

• Streaming: This means watching a programme in 'real time', instead of downloading it to your computer and watching it later. It is just a continuous stream of data. This is also called ‘watch online’

• Downloading: This means you download a programme to your tablet or Sky Q box and you can watch it at a later time. Some downloaded programmes are only available for a limited time and will be deleted from your tablet or Sky Q box automatically.

• Recording: This means recording a programme to your Sky Q box and you can watch it at a later time. The programme will stay on your set top box till you decide to delete it.

If you have chosen to have Audio Description (AD) enabled on your Sky Q box then programmes that provide AD can be watched with the audio description on the tablet.

4

If recordings have been recorded with AD enabled these will also be available when playing back the recording on your tablet in the home. This is a manual to assist you in understanding the layout of the app and how you can interact with it on the Apple operating system using the accessibility feature of VoiceOver. From a visual point of view, both ‘inverted colours’ and ‘grey scale’ settings can be applied in Settings and the app will change to that scheme. If Larger Text is selected in the tablet settings, the text in the app increases across the app so for example the names in lists are enlarged and individual programmes’ titles, synopsis and other details also become bigger. 2.0 Download the Sky Q app You can download the Sky Q app from the Apple App store as you would any other app. The app is only compatible with tablets (iPad or iPad mini) 3.0 Set up Open the app when you are at home using the same Wi-Fi network as your Sky Q box. A dialogue box will appear which will alert you that a Sky box has been detected ("We've found a Sky Q box"). Select the ‘Connect’ button and you will be connected to your Sky Q box and the app Home page will be displayed. After this, when you open the app it will automatically connect and it will say “connecting” when doing this. You will then be taken to the Home page. 4.0 Background information (Overview) The app always opens in landscape mode and it can’t be used in portrait. The screen is generally divided into two parts. The part on the left usually displays the main menu options in a list and takes up around one third of the screen. The part on the right displays the main content.

5

Each item in the menu is a button that is either a button to a different section of the app, if you are on the home screen, or provides you with options to filter the content displayed on the right. If this menu is a long list you can move quickly through it by using a 3 finger swipe up or down. In the top right corner of the screen there are some navigation buttons, this is where you find the ‘home’ and ‘search’ buttons on all screens in the app. There is no home button when the app is on the home screen. The back button is in the top left hand corner on all screens with the exception of the home screen. The back button will say the name of the screen you will go to when you select it and then “back button”. For example, “Home back button.” The VoiceOver "two finger scrub" gesture also works on all screens to navigate back. In addition this gesture can be used for closing pop-up menus. All elements on all screens can be reached by swiping. When a page opens the focus generally goes to the top left element on the page which is the back button. From the back button you can swipe through the menu list on the left hand side of the screen which has ten items. You then you move with swipes to the right hand side of the screen to the home and search button in the top right corner of the screen. These buttons are spoken as “home icon button” and “search icon button”. In most sections programmes are displayed in grids, with the exception of the TV Guide, Recordings and My Q. On these pages when you swipe on from the search button you reach a title. This is the name of the featured programme in that particular section. This title is also a button but this is not spoken in VoiceOver. It allows you to go that individual programme’s page with its details. In the other sections (TV Guide, Recordings and My Q) this title is actually the heading of the page and the man content displayed on the right hand side of the app. This is the name of the option that is selected in the menu list on the right hand side of the page. When you swipe on from the title, you move to the main content of the page on the right, which depending on where you are in the

6

app, can be a grid or a list of programmes or an individual programme page. 4.1 Grid view The main content on the right is often displayed in a grid with images of the programmes in rows and generally 3 to 5 columns. You can swipe from the first one on the left and move along to the end of the row. The next swipe will move you to the next row. Once you have swiped through the grid you will hear a “donk” sound as there is nothing more to explore. If the programmes are displayed on several pages in a grid you can move through the pages quickly by doing a page up or down gesture (a 3 finger swipe up or down). The grid structure is used for the following sections:

1. Top picks 2. Catch up 3. My Q 4. Recordings and all its sections with the exception of

Scheduled recordings and A-Z list 5. Sky Box sets and its sections with the exception of some

sections in Arts and Music 6. Sky cinema

When you open one of these sections, you can swipe from the items in the menu list on the left to the home and search buttons and then to the title of the featured programme for that section and then you will reach the grid of programmes. The first item in the grid is the featured one and so you will hear that title twice. Both are buttons that will take you to the same page, which is the individual programme page for that featured programme. Visually each programme is displayed as the image of the programme with text below it but in speech the focus will just envelop both and speak it as the name of the programme. Even if VoiceOver does not read it as a button, each programme is a button and can be selected for more details.

7

In some sections such as Sky Box Sets and Sky Cinema there is only the image of the programme but the title is read when VoiceOver is on. If you select a button to interact with a programme and then go back to the previous screen, the focus will be at the top left of the page on the back button. You will then have to make your way back with swipes or explore by touch to get to the item you were on before. 4.2 List view When you select a programme, either an individual programme page opens or a page with a list of episodes for the programme. In this case on the left hand side of the screen under the title of the programme there might be filtering options such as for example season 1, season 2 and so on. On the left hand side when swiping on from the search button there will be a list of episodes. Each entry in this list has the same information that you get on an individual programme page. The following sections open with a list view:

• A-Z and Scheduled recordings in Recordings • Any programme which has a number of series and episodes

in Sky Box Sets or Catch Up 4.3 Individual programme page When you select a programme in a grid or in the TV Guide in the various sections across the app you open an Individual programme pages. When you have selected an individual programme the name of the programme is displayed on the left hand side of the screen where the menu was on the Home page. On the right hand side, the information for the programme is displayed. For each programme, you will hear some or all of the following information in one swipe:

• Title of the programme • Season and episode information • Channel • Status

8

• Synopsis • Duration • Date up to which it is available • Time and date of when it originally aired • Time and date of when it is scheduled to record • If the whole series is set to record

You can swipe or move to the right using explore by touch after hearing the information for the programme and you will generally find the “More info” button. This button provides actions that you can carry out on the selected programme. When the button is selected a pop up comes up which can show some or all of the following possible options:

• Download to Sky Q box in HD • Download to Sky Q box in SD • Download to iPad • Downloaded to iPad • Watch online • Record to Sky Q box • Record series to Sky Q • Remove series record on Sky Q box • Cancel record on Sky box • Cancel iPad download

The focus goes to the first option in the pop up and you can swipe to the others and select them. To dismiss the pop up touch the screen anywhere and if you are outside the pop up you will hear a hint on how to dismiss it which is to double tap to close. If you do not select the “more info” button but swipe on or if this is not present on the page, you will swipe to the image of the programme. This is the button that gives the options to download or play the programme. You will hear it called “download button” or “playback button” depending on what option is available at the time. Visually there is an icon on the image and this will be a white play triangle in a white circle when you can play the programme or a white down arrow in a white circle when you can download it. If you swipe on again you might at times reach more information on the programme such as the age rating, if it is in HD, and if Subtitles or Audio Description are available.

9

If you select an action (downloading or recording) the focus lands on the back button and then you need to swipe back to the programme information and you will hear an update on the status of the action, just after the title is spoken and before the synopsis. This could be: Failed to download to Sky Q box, Queued on Sky Q, Downloading to Sky Q box, Ready to watch, Set to record series to Sky Q box. 5.0 Description of the Sections When the app opens, the first thing you will hear is “Home” and then if you swipe you will find the menu list on the left with the names of the 10 different sections of the app. These are:

1. TV Guide 2. Catch up TV 3. Recordings 4. On my iPad 5. My Q 6. Top Picks (this is the home page) 7. Sky Box sets 8. Sky Cinema 9. My Photos 10. Settings

Each one is a button that will take you to that section. You will hear the feedback “selected” when you reach the one that is currently showing on the right hand side of the screen. Visually the one selected will be highlighted in bold. When you open a section for the first time the first one in the list will be the one selected. The exception is the home screen (Top Picks) which is midway down the menu list. The following sections will describe items 1 to 8 and 10 in more detail. Once you have swiped down the list of items in the main menu you will swipe to the right to the “Search” button when on the home screen or to the “home” button if on other pages. 5.1 Top picks (Home page) The Home page of the app is called ‘Top picks’. This page shows the menu list on the left and the top picks on the right.

10

‘Top Picks’ in the menu list on the left is spoken as “Selected Top Picks” and it is visually highlighted in bold. There is no back button on this page. If you continue swiping you will go to the search button and then to the title of the featured programme for the section and then to the top picks programmes which are displayed in a grid of 3 columns and a number of rows depending on how many programmes are being displayed. The first item in the grid will be the featured programme so you will hear the feedback for this programme twice. Visually each programme in the grid is displayed as the image of the programme with text below it but in speech the focus will just envelop both and speak it as the name of the programme. It acts as a button and will take you to the individual programme page. You can quickly move down to the next page of the list of programmes in the grid by using a 3 finger page swipe. If there are more programmes within one option in the grid such as for example a series of related films then a page will open displaying a grid view of the films on the right hand side of the screen. However, if the programme in the grid is a series then a page will load with a list view of episodes. 5.2 TV Guide Select the TV guide option from the main menu on the home page (Top picks) to get to the TV guide page. The TV guide provides you with TV listings showing you what is showing on all the channels throughout the day and the week. On the left-hand side there is a list of filtering options, to only display certain channels. On the right hand side the top of the screen displays the information for the programme currently selected in the TV guide table which when you open the app is what is currently showing on BBC One. Below this, on the right, the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) is displayed in table format. Each row corresponds to a channel.

11

If you swipe from the filtering option in the menu list on the left you reach a heading called “TV guide”. This heading does not appear visually on screen, it is just spoken. Then you swipe on to the home and search buttons and then you go to the selected programme area. 5.2.1 Filtering the TV Guide When you open the TV guide the focus does not go to the back button but it usually goes to the “All channels” option in the menu which is usually not announced when the focus settles on it. You can then swipe on to the other filtering options in the menu list on the left, which are as follows:

1. All channels, 2. HD, 3. Entertainment, 4. Documentaries, 5. Movies, 6. Sports, 7. News, 8. Kids, 9. Music, 10. Shopping, 11. Religion, 12. International, 13. Gaming 14. Specialist.

Each is a button and allows you to choose a filtering option. If for example you choose to filter for just kids, only channels for kids will be displayed in the table view on the right. When one of the filters is selected you will hear the word “selected” followed by the item name when swiping through the menu and it will be highlighted in bold. If you leave the TV guide page and go back into it later on the filter you have selected will still be on and will stay on until you decide to change the filtering options. 5.2.2 Selected Programme in TV Guide On the TV Guide page, when you swipe on from the Home and Search buttons you will reach the part of the screen that displays

12

the information for the programme currently selected in the guide table. When you open the TV guide section the programme which is selected is the first one that you can watch live on TV. This is the first channel in the table grid of channels which generally is BBC One. When you reach the selected programme the first thing you hear is the “Play programme” button which also tells you which channel you will be watching if you select it. This is only the case for programmes that are on at the moment. This button visually is an image of the programme with a play icon in the centre of the image. When you swipe on you reach the title of the programme and the channel is announced. If you swipe on the synopsis, the episode and season information and duration are also spoken if relevant (“s” and “ep” mean season and episode). If you swipe on to a button called “actions”, a pop up displays with a series of options. These can include:

• Record Series on Sky Q box • Record once on Sky Q box • Watch online (if the programme is on at the moment)

When the pop up opens the focus goes to the first option which is spoken and then you can swipe to the other options in the pop up. To close the pop up you need to move away from it by touching the screen outside the box. When you are outside the pop up box, you will hear the hint that will tell you how to close it. You can close the pop up by double tapping anywhere on the screen that is not the pop up itself. When you swipe on from the “Actions” button you will hear details such as, the duration of the programme, the age rating, if it is HD, if it has subtitles or audio description and the start and end time. Then you can swipe to “current progress” which tells you how far along the programme is. After this, you can swipe and reach the first programme for the first programme displayed in the table of programmes. This programme

13

will be announced as “selected” so that you know it is the one displayed at the top of the screen on the right. If you record a programme, a Red icon with a white R appears to the left of the title in the table of the programmes. In speech this is spoken as “recording”. This is spoken after the name of the programme and the channel name. 5.2.3 Channel and programme guide table Once you have swiped through all the information about the selected programme the focus will go to the first programme on the first channel in the table of programmes on the right. The time slots for the programmes are displayed in the top row and they are slots of 30 minutes. The first column on the left displays the names of the channels, one below the other. Each channel is a button which can be selected to play that specific channel on your device. There is a useful hint to remind you what the button does “tap to play channel”, which with VoiceOver on means double tap to play channel. To the right of each channel name are the titles of the programmes that will be aired during the day on that channel. There are about 7 to 8 channels displayed at any one time in the table of programmes. The programme that is displayed on the top part of the screen will be referred to as “selected” in the table and by the use of colour differentiation (a dark blue background). If you swipe or move horizontally from each of these channel buttons then the programmes for the day on that channel are spoken. If you swipe on you can reach all the programmes in that day for that channel. Once you are at the end of the day the next swipe will take you to the following channel in the table. If you want to find out what is on now on different channels you will need to investigate the screen by touch to move to the next channel down in the table. You are able to move quickly through a day’s programmes by using a 3 finger page swipe to the left. You can use this gesture to get to the evening programmes quickly.

14

It is also possible to move to other channels quickly by doing a 3 finger page swipe up to move down the list of channels which will allow you to jump by 7 to 8 channels every time you move a page down. There are approximately 70 pages of channels when all channels are displayed and no filter is applied. Below the table at the bottom of the screen on the right, there are 7 buttons in a row that allow you to change the day of the week to be displayed in the guide. The day that is being shown in the guide is spoken as “selected” and it is visually shown as bold. Saturday is read as Sat, Sunday as Sun, Monday as Mon and Wednesday as Wed and the other days are read in full. Each day of the week is followed by the announcement of the number date for example Sat 01. 5.3 Catch up TV Select the Catch up TV option from the main menu on the home page (Top picks) to get to the Catch up TV page. The Catch up TV section provides you with the option of watching showings that have already aired via the different Catch up services. There is a long list of filtering options to select specific channels catch up services on the left hand side. There are more than 30 or 40 options but these are likely to start with:

1. Features, 2. BBC iPlayer, 3. ITV hub, 4. All 4. 5. Channel 5, 6. Sky 1 7. Sky Atlantic 8. Sky Living 9. Sky Arts 10. Sky Sports 11. etc

You can move down these quickly with a page gesture, a 3 finger swipe up or down anywhere on the screen, once the VoiceOver focus is on the menu list on the left.

15

The right hand side of the screen presents a grid with 3 items per row with the programmes presented for one of the channel catch ups. Visually each programme is displayed as the image of the programme with text below it but in speech the focus will just envelop both and speak it as the name of the programme. It acts as a button and will take you to the individual programme page. If there are a lot of programmes displayed in several pages you can move down the programmes with a 3 finger page down swipe. When you select the BBC iPlayer a pop up notification will display on screen warning you that you will not be able to watch its programmes via the Sky Q app. Depending on the catch up service you select, the left hand side of the screen where the menus usually are, will display filtering options. For example in the BBC iPlayer section the options to filter might include:

• Highlights • Most popular • Channels • Categories • Collections

The ITV Hub’s filters may include:

• Features • Most popular • By Day • Soaps • Entertainment • Drama • Comedy • Lifestyle

The home screens of some Catch Up services (such as the ITV hub or All 4) have the same layout which means that after the home and search buttons you swipe to the title of the featured programme. This is a button that allows you to go to that individual programme’s page. If you swipe on you reach the first item on the grid of programmes which is the featured programme.

16

Other Catch Up services have home pages where, after the home and search button, you swipe to a heading which is the title of the page and is the name of the filter option selected in the menu on the left of the page. This is the case for the BBC iPlayer or Channel 5. The main part of the screen will always present a grid of programmes to choose from in rows each having 3 items per row. These are buttons that can be selected and then either the individual programme page or the list of episodes for a programme will be opened. 5.4 Recordings Select the recordings option from the main menu on the home page (Top picks) to get to the recordings page. You can access all your recordings from the Sky Q box and watch them via your tablet. There are filtering options on the left hand side of the screen where menus are usually displayed in the app and these are from the top:

1. Most Recent, 2. A-Z, 3. Scheduled, 4. Purchases, 5. Rentals, 6. Download to iPad.

The recordings are displayed in a grid of 3 programmes per row on the right hand side of the page. If you have many recordings you can use the 3 finger page swipe to move through them quickly. Visually each programme is displayed as the image of the programme with text below it but in speech the focus will just envelop both and speak it as the name of the programme. It acts as a button and will take you to the individual programme page. 5.4.1 Watching a recorded programme with AD You need to have recorded the programme with AD enabled in the settings on your Sky Q box under the subsection accessibility in order to be able to hear the AD on your device. You can then

17

access a programme that has been recorded with AD on your device and when you play it you will be able to hear AD too. 5.4.2 A-Z Filtering in Recordings Select A-Z from the left hand menu on the recordings page. On the right, a list of all recordings is displayed under each letter heading. There is a table index along the far right edge of the screen which will allow you to go quickly to the letter that your recording starts with. The letters in the list of programmes are headings so you can use the headings setting in the rotor setting on VoiceOver to move down through the heading letters. You can also use a 3 fingers page down swipe to quickly move through the pages of recordings. Each entry in the list is a button with the title of the programme and then the channel it was recorded on. When the button is selected, you will open the individual programme page for that recording or the page of the list of episodes available for that programme. 5.4.3 Scheduled Recordings Select the scheduled recording option from the left hand menu on the Recordings page. When you swipe on from the home and search buttons you reach the title Scheduled which is a visual heading on the page but which is not spoken as such with VoiceOver. You can then swipe to a list of scheduled recordings which is presented on the right hand side of the screen. Each entry is actually a button that provides the title of the programme and the time it is scheduled to record and on which channel. Each will open an individual programme page for the schedule recording. 5.4.4 Purchases, Rentals and Download to iPad Select the purchase, rentals or download to iPad option from the left hand menu on the recordings page. A grid of available programmes will appear on the right hand side of the screen.

18

5.5 On My iPad Select the On My iPad option from the main menu on the home page (Top picks) to get to the TV guide page. The On My iPad section shows you what you have downloaded to your tablet. Before reaching the individual programmes on the right hand side, the “Downloaded” heading is announced and then “Find more recordings to download” which is a button that will take you to the Recordings section. This is followed by the individual programmes on the device which are displayed in grid view. If you select one of the programmes you will reach its individual programme page. 5.6 My Q Select My Q option from the main menu on the home page (Top picks) to get to the My Q page. On the My Q page you can keep track of what you have started watching. On the right hand side of the screen programmes are displayed in a grid. In this section the image and the title of the page are separate so you reach the image which is spoken as “playback button”. If you select this button, you resume watching the programme at the point you have left it. The next swipe provides the “current progress” and the percentage of time you have watched of the programme. The next swipe will go to the title of the programme. 5.7 Sky Box sets Select the Sky Box sets option from the main menu on the home page (Top picks) to get to the Sky Box sets page. On the left hand side of the screen a list of filter options are displayed and on the right hand side the programmes are shown in a grid, in this section the grid shows 5 items per row. In this section there are only images of the programmes in the grid and there is no visible title beneath each image. With VoiceOver

19

the name of the programme is spoken when the focus lands on each picture. As with other grids in the app one can use a page down and up gesture (3 finger swipe up or down) to move quickly through the programmes. The filtering options may contain some of the following options:

1. Featured, 2. Drama, 3. Comedy, 4. Sky Originals, 5. Entertainment, 6. Kids, 7. Arts and Music, 8. Documentaries, 9. 3D

When you swipe on from the home and search buttons the featured programme name is spoken. When you swipe on you reach the first item in the grid which is the same as the featured programme. Both are buttons that allow you to open the feature programme individual page. All the other buttons on the grid can be selected and the individual programme page will be opened. 5.8 Sky Cinema Select the Sky Cinema option from the main menu on the home page (Top picks) to get to the Sky Cinema page. On the left hand side of the screen the filter options are displayed in list view and on the right hand side the films are shown in a grid, which in this grid shows 5 items per row. The filtering options will contain some of the following:

1. New premiers, 2. Most Popular, 3. Greats, 4. Disney

When you move from the home and search buttons to the main area of the screen you will reach the featured film title. When you swipe on you reach the first item in the grid which is the same as

20

the featured film. Both are buttons that allow you to open the feature film individual page. All the other buttons on the grid can be selected and the individual programme page will be opened. Each item in the grid is the image of the film (no text is visible) and in VoiceOver the name of the movie is spoken. Each image is a button to reach the individual programme page for that film. 6.0 Sign in You will need to sign in when:

• You download a show on to your iPad • You want to watch live TV or Shows on demand while you're

away from home When you need to sign in a Sign in Screen will come up and this will ask you to insert your username and your password in two text fields. There will also be an option to sign up. 7.0 Playing a programme Once a programme starts playing two control areas are displayed: one horizontally along the top of the screen and one horizontally at the bottom of the screen. When the playback starts a hint tells you that the controls are on screen and how to bring them back up on screen to use them. Double tapping on the screen will hide or show the controls These control areas stay on the screen for about 5 seconds. Whenever you touch the screen, you will hear the hint on how to display the controls on screen so that you can interact with them. If you ‘double tap’ they appear again for about 5 seconds. The control bar at the top of the screen displays on the left hand side the ‘Done’ button, which when selected closes the playback of the programme and takes you back to the programme information screen. Next to the ‘Done’ button to the right, there is a track position slider which gives you information on how many minutes you have watched the programme for out of the total number of minutes. You can use a flick up or down to move the slider and change your

21

position within the programme. To the right of this is the full screen button. The control bar at the bottom of the screen displays from left to right a volume slider (when in focus flick up or down to change the volume), a 30 second rewind button, a pause button and a next track button which allows you to jump forward in the programme as it is playing. You need to explore the screen to find either control bar, but once you have found one you can swipe through its elements. 8.0 PIN Screen If you are selecting to watch a programme that has an age rating or you have set up parental control options you will be asked for a PIN to proceed. A Pin entry screen will be displayed on your device when the Playback button is selected. The Pin entry screen will tell you that it is the TV PIN that you are asked to input. When you swipe on you will reach the first text field for the first digit. There are 4 edit boxes in the middle of the screen and below it is a telephone style keypad to allow you to enter the digits. You can swipe from the heading to the edit fields and then to the keypad, when you reach the keypad you can just select the digits you want and they will be inserted automatically in the correct text fields. Starting from the top left of the keypad you will find the digit 1. When you swipe right you will reach 2 and 3. You are only allowed to enter one digit per edit box so you can just enter one digit after the other and they will automatically be inserted in the correct box. Once all the right digits have been entered the programme will start automatically. If you do not hear anything then you have entered the wrong PIN. If you investigate the screen or swipe back from the keypad you will reach the error message which is displayed at the top of the keypad screen (above the edit boxes) which will tell you what the problem is and how many more attempts you have to enter the correct PIN.
