1 What you need to know about Saga Web

1.1 Description of Saga Web

Saga Web is a service which, from a single web tool, gives access to bibliographic databases of standards and regulations, as well as to the full versions of standards. This access depends on each customer’s scope of subscription.

The full text of standards is available in PDF format and in html format (web page) in some cases.

Saga Web also allows you to create your document tag and watch system depending on your requirements.

Saga Web’s basic features are as follows:►► A search engine►► A bilingual French/English interface►► Option of consulting, annotating and printing documents►► Option of being alerted to new documents issued within your scope of subscription (RSS feed)►► Daily updates►► Different identification methods (IP address/email address/password, etc.)

If you need information about how Saga Web works, click on this button. Then enter your telephone number and our Technical Support team will call you free of charge. You must provide your direct line number and not a switchboard number. Otherwise, our Technical Support team will be unable to reach you.

Our Technical Support service is open every business day (apart from AFNOR closing days), from Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm (French time).

1.2 Saga Web options

Tag and watch:

Alerts about document updates by email or RSS feed. You can tag and watch documents selected and kept in a folder, or the results of a saved search. You can also choose the frequency of your alerts: daily, weekly or monthly.

This guide describes in detail how Saga Web works with tag and watch option. All functions specific to Saga Web with tag and watch option will be identified by the phrase [Specific to Saga Web with tag and watch option].

6 User guide – Saga Web

Export:

Option of exporting search results lists and receiving your tag and watch information in Excel format.

Document access level:►► Nomad + level: consult/print/and save (lifetime of PDF files: 90 days)

Customisation:►► Logo + text of your choice for the welcome page

1.3 Contents of Saga Web

Saga Web gives you access to bibliographic information for the following collections regardless of your subscription level:►► Applicable and withdrawn AFNOR standards►► AFNOR drafts►► Applicable and withdrawn ISO standards (International Standardisation Organisation)►► ISO drafts►► Eurocollection (applicable and withdrawn European standards from CEN or CENELEC)►► Eurocollection drafts►► Applicable IEC standards (International Electrotechnical Commission)►► French and European technical regulations►► Applicable and withdrawn ASTM standards (American Society for Testing and Materials)

These collections constitute a holding of around 219,000 documents.

The freshness of document updates differs depending on their origin:►► French standards and draft standards and European standards: daily►► ISO standards/draft standards and IEC standards: fortnightly►► Regulations: daily►► ASTM standards: monthly

Your company’s chosen scope of subscription will determine whether or not you can consult the text of documents (standards and regulations). The scope can range from complete collections to sections containing only a few dozen documents.

2 Searching for a document2.1 Description of the search form

Once you have logged into Saga Web, you will see the search form. You can return to this search form at any time by clicking on the search tab.

The search form contains several search criteria. You can use either a single field (e.g. Search) or a combination of several fields (e.g. Search for + Collections + Date). It is not mandatory to use all the fields.

If no results are returned, you must expand the search. For example, you can expand the search by including all documents rather than only applicable documents.

The section below describes each search field and its purpose.

2.2 Search field

The Search field offers you several search options. You can enter words and also identifiers.

2.2.1 By word

The search is carried out on the words composing titles, abstracts and descriptors (keywords that define the content of the document). These three elements are part of the document’s bibliographic record.►► You can enter either a word or a phrase (e.g. “Safety of Machinery”).

Page 10: User guide - groupe.afnor.org · User guide – Saga Web 7 2 Searching for a document 2.1 Description of the search form Once you have logged into Saga Web, you will see the search

8 User guide – Saga Web

►► You can enter a word with or without special characters (é, è, à, etc.), in upper or lower case, in singular or plural.►► You can enter a word in French or English.

You may be using technical words specific to your field of activity. If the word does not exist, find a synonym.

2.2.2 Logical operators

The Search field allows you to combine a word and an identifier, or several words with each other. To do this, use logical operators such as AND, OR, NOT.

You can write these operators either by typing their name (e.g. “AND”) or by typing the associated symbol (e.g. " + ").

►► AND (+) Both of the criteria must be true for the same document.

Example: Steel AND Aluminium

Result = all documents dealing with steel as well as with aluminium.

This operator allows you to refine your search.

►► OR (,) The document must contain one or the other of the two criteria.

Example: Steel OR Aluminium

Result  = all documents dealing with steel plus all documents dealing with aluminium.

This operator allows you to “expand” your search.

►► NOT (#) The document must contain the first criterion, but not the second.

Example: Steel NOT Aluminium

Result  = all documents dealing with steel, except those also dealing with aluminium.

This operator allows you to refine your search.

2.2.3 By identifier

You can use the Search field to search for an official identifier of a standard or regulatory text.

For example, you can enter NF EN ISO 9001.

Note: for documents in the AFNOR collection, you can also search by classification index.

For example, X50-131

Page 11: User guide - groupe.afnor.org · User guide – Saga Web 7 2 Searching for a document 2.1 Description of the search form Once you have logged into Saga Web, you will see the search

9User guide – Saga Web

Tips for searching by identifier:

Saga Web has an auto-complete feature in the “Search for” field. When you type the second character, it suggests the first ten results starting with the characters you have entered. This guides you in entering the identifier you are looking for.

Important: auto-complete will work only if you follow the syntax of the criterion in question.

E.g. With “NF EN ISO 9“, auto-complete works. With “NFENISO9“, auto-complete does not work.

If you are uncertain about the letters (monograms) prefixing the standard, we suggest that you enter only the numeric part of the standards. For example, if you enter “9001“, you will find the NF EN ISO 9001 standard. On the other hand, if you mistakenly enter “NF AN ISO 9001“, you will not find the standard.

2.3 Collections

This drop-down list allows you to restrict the search to the selected collection. All collections currently available are displayed in the drop-down list.

To restrict the search to a collection, select a collection from the “All collections“ drop-down list.

Page 12: User guide - groupe.afnor.org · User guide – Saga Web 7 2 Searching for a document 2.1 Description of the search form Once you have logged into Saga Web, you will see the search

10 User guide – Saga Web

2.4 ICS

ICS (International Classification for Standardisation) is a classification system created by the ISO which makes it possible to search by subject, regardless of the origin of the document.

You can enter the ICS code directly or use the list by clicking on the button .

This will display a page on which you can select the desired subject(s). By default, this page shows only the first level of the ICS subjects (this is a three-level tree).

You can:►► Expand the ICS tree and view the sub-levels by clicking on the symbol on the left.

Page 13: User guide - groupe.afnor.org · User guide – Saga Web 7 2 Searching for a document 2.1 Description of the search form Once you have logged into Saga Web, you will see the search

11User guide – Saga Web

►► Find ICS codes directly by entering a word in the search field:

To select a subject, click on its wording. The subject code is automatically transferred to the “Selected ICS” column (when a subject is selected, it is displayed in green in the tree). You can select multiple subjects.

To delete a selected code, click on the symbol .

To confirm the ICS codes you have selected, click on the button.

2.5 Date

The date criterion allows you to search based on two dates:►► Either the official publication date of the standard. This is the official date associated with the

standard’s identifier. ►► Or the Availability date. This is the date on which this document was made available on Saga

Web and sold in AFNOR Webshop. There may be a time lag between this date and the official publication date.

Page 14: User guide - groupe.afnor.org · User guide – Saga Web 7 2 Searching for a document 2.1 Description of the search form Once you have logged into Saga Web, you will see the search

12 User guide – Saga Web

To select the desired date, use the drop-down list:

You can then define a period that can include the desired date, by entering the month and year of the start and/or end of the period.

Note: you are not required to define the month, the year on its own is sufficient.

Note: if you make an entry in the "Since" field, it is not mandatory to complete the "To" field and vice versa.

[Specific to Saga Web with tag and watch option]

2.6 Update flag

In Saga Web, updates are made every day (except on weekends and holidays)..

Update flags allow you to track the "life" and "evolution" of documents on a daily basis.

They can be used individually or in combination (separated by a comma).

To use the "Update flag" list, click on the button :

Click on a code to select it. The update flag is automatically transferred to the "Selected update flag" column (when a flag is selected, it is displayed in green).

Page 15: User guide - groupe.afnor.org · User guide – Saga Web 7 2 Searching for a document 2.1 Description of the search form Once you have logged into Saga Web, you will see the search

13User guide – Saga Web

To delete a selected flag, click on the symbol .

To confirm the update flags you have selected, click on the button .

Description of update flags:

U: Document unchanged since last update.

This flag tells you that the document has remained unchanged since the previous update.

N: New document.

This flag allows you to identify on a daily basis any new documents that have been issued.

(Upon the next update, this "N" flag will usually be converted to a "U" flag)

W: Document withdrawn since last update.

This flag allows you to identify on a daily basis any documents that have just been withdrawn.

(Upon the next update, this "W" flag will be converted to an "H" flag)

H: Historical document (withdrawn since more than one update).

This flag allows you to identify "Historical" documents (withdrawn since more than one update).

(The flag which preceded the "H" flag during the previous update must have been the "W" flag)

A: Document amended since last update.

This flag helps you to identify on a daily basis those applicable documents that have been amended by one or more other documents (supplements, addendum, etc.).

(Upon the next update, this "A" flag will be converted to an "M" flag)

Page 16: User guide - groupe.afnor.org · User guide – Saga Web 7 2 Searching for a document 2.1 Description of the search form Once you have logged into Saga Web, you will see the search

14 User guide – Saga Web

M: Document amended since more than one update

This flag allows you to identify those documents, whether applicable or not, that have been amended by one or more other documents (supplements, addendum, etc.) at a given point in their "life".

(The flag which preceded the "M" flag during the previous update must have been the "A" flag. The "M" flag is systematically linked to another A, U, W, H and T flag)

T: Document having had a new release

This flag identifies those documents that have had a new release. A new release is a new version of the document, with minor changes such as spelling corrections.

(only for AFNOR standards)

2.7 Limit the search

You can edit your comment in the window that appears. By default, all new comments are private, but you can share them by selecting the option . Click on the button to confirm the creation or modification of your comment.

Comments to be put back following a new release

Some documents have new releases during their lifetime, with more or less minor changes in their full text. Only the html version of the latest release is available in Saga Web and only this new release can accept new comments.

However, comments created before the standard had a new release are not lost. You have the option of putting them back without having to create them again.

To do this, click on the pictogram , located in the top banner of the html display of the standard to view all the comments for this standard.

If a standard has had at least one new release and has comments that have not been put back, you will see a sequence of comments in the tabs corresponding to the different release versions. You can:

38 User guide – Saga Web

►► Either delete the comment associated with the old release and recreate it manually in the current release.►► Or put a comment associated with an old release back in the current release. Important: if you

decide to put back your comment, 3 outcomes are possible:

1. Saga Web detects that the chapter number and title associated with your comment have not changed between the previous release and the current release. In this case, the com-ment is put back in the current release, linked to the same chapter.

2. Saga Web detects that the chapter number and title associated with your comment have changed between releases. In this case, the comment is put back in the same chapter number, even if the wording of the chapter has changed.

3. Saga Web detects that the chapter number associated with your comment no longer exists in the current release. In this case, your comment cannot be moved and you must delete it and create it again in the relevant chapter.

5 Folders

5.1 What you need to know

Folders in Saga Web are used to organise document groups. For example, a folder for each of your projects to help you to quickly locate the associated standards.

You can create and comment as many folders as you wish and organise them in a tree, with folders containing sub-folders. These folders can contain one or more documents and a document can be linked to one or more folders.

[Specific to Saga Web with tag and watch option]

For customers with tag and watch option, activating an alert on a folder allows you to convert this folder into a list of standards monitored by Saga Web. To find out more about tag and watch, refer to Section 5.7 Tag and watch with My folders.

5.2 Navigate in folders – Folders menu

The starting point for navigating in your folders is the Folders menu which allows you to expand the folder tree (using the pictogram to expand and to collapse), and to go directly to a folder by clicking on the name of this folder.

5.7.3 Update history

The directory allows you to keep a trace of the changes that have occurred in your folders (document withdrawal, amendment and replacement). This is the same information you receive through email alerts for your folders.

This directory is visible in the Folders menu only if you have at least one folder for which an alert is activated (see previous section), and if this folder has undergone at least one change, such as document withdrawal, amendment or replacement.

This directory contains only monitored folders that have undergone at least one change, such as document withdrawal, amendment or replacement.

Click on the name of one of these folders to view a dated history of these changes.

6.3.1 How it works

It is as if Saga Web were to relaunch your saved search every day to check for any changes in the results in comparison with the previous day. Since Saga Web also detects new documents added to this results list, you will be informed of anything new in the subject searched.

6.3.2 Activate an alert and associate users

When you create or edit a saved search, select the box. An alert is activated only for you and you can confirm this by clicking on the Save button.

When the box is selected, the following menu is displayed to allow you to associate other users with your alert on your saved search. This means that they will receive the same alert as you at the same time as you, as far as this saved search is concerned.

To display all users once again, clear this field and click on again.

The default frequency is daily for both types of alerts. However, if you change to Weekly, once a week you will receive an aggregated list of your alerts from the previous week.
