Week 3 – English Monday 20th April Knowing how much you all enjoy reading our ‘The Week Junior’ papers, I thought you’d like to complete some of the examples of work based around this ‘picture news’ resource. I receive a weekly email and will share tasks/headlines with you. PS: I’ve written to ‘the week’ to see if we can have an electronic version of our subscription for now (watch this space!).

Tuesday 21st April In her Easter weekend collective worship, Mrs Higgins spoke of trees which are important to her at different stages in her life. Chose someone in your family or a friend and write an interview report on what feature of nature is important to them. Is there a mountain range or a lake or waterfall that holds special memories? Write as an interview. How would you use reported speech? Link to ART WORK Wednesday 22nd April

‘They had already travelled so far, yet still had so much further to go. This was just the beginning of their journey. She began today like every other: sitting with her line in the water, hoping to catch a bite for breakfast.’ Continue this opening scene by using lots of description to ‘show not tell’ the reader what is happening. You might like to include another character is – is it a family member? Brother or sister? Is it a best friend? Talking animal? Consider what has happened. Where are they travelling to? Will

the calm water suddenly turn to a sea of waves? What might they meet next? Thursday 23rd April – editing task A grammar task to be completed on studyzone – watch clip https://www.studyzone.tv/lessonID297-I-can-change-between-direct-and-indirect-(or-reported)-speech Look at your work from Monday. Today you will edit to ensure that ‘direct speech is used for a quote and try to change some of your writing as indirect too. You might like to complete the worksheet for practice. Friday 24th April Login to Oddizzi (follow link below) and complete the reading comprehension and creative activity on climate. Then write a short ‘news broadcast’. Consider the formal language you would use to discuss the impact climate change has on weather patterns. Write a short broadcast on the effects on the weather – you could even film yourself presenting (use your script). Extension: perhaps you can also chart differences in weather with relatives and friends in different parts of the UK (or around the world). Can you plot them on a map? Take a photo of your map for your home learning book.. https://www.oddizzi.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/CORE-KS2-ODDIZZI-FACTFILE-CLIMATE-ZONES-Learning-Zone.pdf https://www.oddizzi.com/teachers/ username: homeschool password: oddizzi

Friday 24th I see maths https://youtu.be/C-KVU2mBb2U shape puzzles (continued) Complete a challenge

Week 4 – whole week – Historical Writing Historical writing competition. Your English task is to spend this week researching a period in history and writing a narrative set in that time. It may be a period of history we have already studied this year – for example writing a story about life aboard HMS Endurance, or being part of Darwin’s expedition to the Galapagos – were you a researcher/or an artist? Will you write from the point of view of the famous finches or the Iguanas? Or it could simply be a period of history that interests you and you would like to research further. Choose your own event and then a character to tell the story. The key is to ensure accurate fact is contained within the narrative but it should read as a story. For more details on the competition head to: https://www.history.org.uk/primary/categories/531/news/3451/write-your-

own-historical-fiction-competition-2020

Thursday grammar focus Consider how you will use the past perfect in your work. Reminder of how to use it by watching this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzprsQopJ-s If you’d like extra practice – try out the session on studyzone https://www.studyzone.tv/lessonID220-I-can-identify-the-past,-present-and-

future-perfect-verb We had been travelling through the Andes for week when we made the incredible discovery…

Optional extra (creative and investigation exercises) SCIENCE – streamlined shape Recall the balance forced acting on shapes moving through water. Try the shape experiment with a tall bottle and some plastercine shaped. Then perhaps you could design a boat each and have a family boat race (if you’re close to a river why not race on that! Otherwise a paddling pool would be fabulous too). Don’t forget to send me some photos!

SCIENCE – Gears & Pulleys Watch these clips https://www.wallaceandgromit.com/films/cracking-contraptions Consider which ‘marvelous mecanisms’ are used to help them work. Imagine we are going to build some ‘Marvelous Mecanisms’ to make life in a tree house easier – what would you suggest? Draw a labelled diagram using all three for different reasons (don’t forget to explain why you have chosen gears, pulleys and levers for particular purpose)

MUSIC : This term’s music focus – HOLST the planets Mrs Washington had planned to share and compose with class 5 from this week. I’ve found a piece of music to link with this term’s science topic – SPACE. While listening to this piece consider the following: If the music was describing a colour, which colour would it be? If the music was describing a shape, which shape would it be? If the music was describing a line, would it be curvy and smooth or spiky and jagged? Discuss this piece of music with someone in your family. Can you listen to it together with a grandparent or aunt or uncle over facetime? Draw an image of what comes to mind while listening ….

Mrs Washington is going to suggest a song we all sing every week – this week’s song is new beginning (we hope you have fun singing as a family): https://www.singup.org/song-bank/lyrics/view/794-new-beginning/type/main/

Spanish You might want teach your family how to tell the time in spanish – play ‘Que hora es’ – but with a twist – watch this clip where a group of Spanish children play Abuelito, ¿qué hora es?, a Spanish playground game similar to ‘ what’s the time Mr Wolf’. They count in Spanish using numbers 1-10 as they play taking footsteps in the style of different animals. The animals are canguro (kangaroo), girafa (giraffe) and hormiguita (little ant). http://www.tes.co.uk/teaching-resource/Playground-counting-game-from-Spain-6172999/ To say how many steps and which animal they should mimic, the person says ‘number + de + animal’ --> ‘diez de girafa’ = 10 steps in the style of a giraffe.

RE: Last term you studied the Stations of the Cross with Mrs Anderson. Can you create your own artwork showing one of the Stations of the Cross.

CREATIVE – ARTWORK Family trees – which leaves will you paint/collage onto your family tree? It can be a tremendous mix of tree species which hold special memories to you and your family.

Jim Dine inspired blue hearts for the NHS

Last term we looked at the artwork of Jim Dine: one of his iconic images was the painted heart shape. A schoolgirl in Suffolk has launched a campaign to show support for the NHS by placing blue hearts in windows. You can read more about this on https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-52124715 . Your task is to design a blue heart then display in a window of your home.

Creative Project – observing

colour

Spencer Finch made this colour wheel art installation in Folkestone (noticing the ever changing tone of the channel throughout the days). You can visit it on a walk down the Leas in future. Perhaps you’d like to create your own mini version of this tonal wheel to explore the outdoors – can you focus on the greens in your garden and how they change tone at different points in the spring days, do they change tone as we move towards summer and at different times of the day - look closely at the colour. Mix colours of paint to create different tones. Why not give them a name too? (there is a competition you may be interested in next term).

STRANGE ACTIVITY IN YOUR CLASSROOM I popped into our classroom today and found something unusual. This photo was sitting on my desk…

And there is also following message (written in Martian code’):

Will you be able to crack it? Can you offer an answer? Writing your reply in the same ‘martian code’?
