The banner image is of a black-footed ferret. It is an endangered species that resides in the Aubrey Valley outside of Peach Springs, Arizona. They are not the ferrets seen in pet stores, but a specialized carnivore, feeding primarily on prairie dogs.

With Santa ready to make the yearly rounds, the time is right to remind members how simple it can be to save money.

After all, some stores had Christmas decorations available in August. Maybe Christmas really does arrive earlier each year.

Nevertheless, it’s the time of year to remind members of the many opportunities available to save money throughout the gift-buying time of year.

A person who paid a membership fee and purchases power from MEC is a member. This means the member’s family can also use the Co-op Connections© Card.

Even if the card isn’t used to purchase gifts, it saves money at thousands of locations, leaving each member with extra funds to get through the holiday season.

Members can save on an assortment of needs, ranging from automotive needs and dining to fi lling prescriptions.

“MEC and other cooperatives across the country have worked hard to get businesses involved in the program,” said Terry Puryear, public aff airs coordinator for MEC. “We have many local businesses participating and there are thousands of online opportunities.”

More than 130 local businesses off er card-holder benefi ts to go along with approximately 5,000 online stores and coupon opportunities at www.coupons.com.

“Savings vary, but every participating business off ers members a deal,” Puryear said. “They can also save anywhere from 10-85 percent on prescriptions, dental, vision, hearing, chiropractic, lab, and imaging services.”

While the dream gift might not be a discount visit to the dentist, the money a member saves can be placed into a fund to spend on someone else.

“The card is free for all members, there are no fees, it never expires, and the savings are real,” Puryear said. “Use it.”
