Tairua and Pauanui Medical Centres have a new ‘docteur’ in the house! Dr Virginie Jouan is French, and has joined Dr Wessel Oosthuizen to provide an extra pair of hands on Fridays. Dr Virginie attended medical school in northern France, an area she says that has tough weather and tough people, adding that the people have the “sun in their hearts”! She specialised in general practice, adding emergency medicine and underwater/hyperbaric medicine degrees to her credentials. She spent six years working in emergency
Thedoctorisinmedicine, and thirteen years in her own practice, before moving to Australia with her engineer husband and two boys. In Australia, Dr Virginie worked in private practice in Townsville for over three years, enjoying the tropical climate and boating. Always wanting to move to New Zealand, she was able to secure a position at Thames Medical Centre that coincided with a university enrolment for her eldest son and local work opportunities for her husband. But the recent impacts of COVID-19 meant that she has had to scale back her hours
in Thames, and look for work opportunities further afield. She said, as keen boaties the family has always liked the look of Tairua, with its mooring and marina facilities and its location on the eastern seaboard. So fond of the area, in fact, that she admitted she would love to move to the area for good! With her experiences in a range of medical practice, Dr Virginie is looking forward to bringing her expertise to Pauanui and Tairua. Working Friday mornings in Pauanui before driving over to Tairua for the afternoon session, she already sees possibilities in the area for the addition of
extra preventative medicine, extended follow-up practices, and a funding model that could bring costs down for patients!We l c o m e , D r V i r g i n i e !
Dr Virginie Jouan has just joined the Teams at Pauanui and Tairua Medical Centres.

Congratulations to the winner of the recent Mercury Bay Art Escape Showcase Exhibition People's Choice award, Tairua artist Michael Harrison! This was Michael’s first year exhibiting in his own right, having been involved previously with the Hikuai Art Group exhibitions. Only recently did he start experimenting with alcohol inks, so his winning picture (alcohol ink on yupo (a specially developed synthetic paper)) is a credit to his ability with this new medium. The abstract landscape artwork is now on display in an "After Lockdown" exhibition, being held at Hot Waves Café. When quizzed about his background in art Michael said, “Over the years I have dabbled with painting and a bit of drawing. I was encouraged by my mother who was a keen water colourist and painted into her early nineties.” Despite initial hesitancy he joined the Pauanui Art Group in 2014 and is still a member, and not long after that joined the Hikuai Art Group as well. In recent years the Pauanui Art Group has become the Tairua Art Group, meeting at the Fishing Club at

the marina and Michael keenly recommends this group to everyone who would like to try their hand in the arts. Michael welcomes visitors to his converted sleep-out studio gallery at 238 Paku Drive, Tairua, but asks that visitors phone first on either (07) 211 9367 or 021 132 5027, to arrange a suitable time. He suggests if you want to follow up the Tairua Art Group you can contact him or Bev Wickham on 021 163 2882 for more information.

CARROT CAKE (Courtesy of Sharon Marr)This is the carrot cake I make for church sometimes that folk like! It's a very old recipe, dating back to when our Si and Lissy were very little.
lngredients:2 eggs3/8 cup oil¾ cup sugar1 tsp vanilla1 cup flour1 tsp baking soda1 tsp baking powder1 tsp cinnamon½ tsp mixed spice½ tsp salt1½ cups grated carrotsSometimes I also add mixed fruit and walnuts as well
Method:Grease and line a 20 x 20cm tin (or round cake tin). I firstly peel my carrots and throw them into the food processor to grate, then take them out and put them aside. Don’t bother washing the food processor, as you can continue with the recipe in the food processor.
Beat eggs, oil and sugar till smooth.Add flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and salt, and mix until smooth.Add grated carrots, pulse.Pulse in mixed fruit and walnuts (optional) No need to chop, just fold in.Bake 40 mins at 180ºC.I make a lemon butter icing and top with lemon rind (or mixed peel if no fresh lemons available).

The team at Tairua Four Square has been nominated as a group, for this week’s Appreciation Award. The nominations covered everyone who stood in the front line, those who kept the shop stocked, andCovid Couriers who provided deliveries to our older shoppers!
TEAM FOUR SQUARE, together you all guided the town’s shoppers through the lockdown process with patience, humour and stamina!
Thank you! WE VERY MUCH APPRECIATE YOU!
Snippets from our Info CentresTAIRUA: During lockdown newly appointed Information Centre (TIC) manager, Eve Roper, was working from home but was able to keep locals in the loop through the Information Centre’s Fa-cebook page and the TIC website. Encouraged to think creatively, Eve opened the Centre shop to the locals via Facebook, offering free gift wrapping and even delivery in Tairua, for Mother's Day. She reported that, “This idea has really caught on and we are continuing our little shop through our Facebook page for the future.” With the Centre now open in Level 2, she has noted that, “There are quite a few new faces visiting, who have been in lockdown and are waiting for flights home. They are really enjoying the different walks they can experience, now that they can move around.”PAUANUI: During lock-down the Information Centre (PIC) also worked behind the scenes preserving ac-cessibility for folks with que-ries. Centre manager, Jewel Hughes said, “As always there were a variety of enquir-ies, but couriers and refuse collections topped the list of topics.” Lockdown also gave PIC the opportunity to work on a revised budget for the forthcoming year, that would reflect local and domestic visi-tors, rather than international ones. Jewel said, “In Level 2 our doors opened and it was absolutely wonderful to see everyone here during the first weekend that people were free to travel!” She noted that whilst visitor numbers were still small, there are travel-lers coming to Pauanui for a first time. Jewel was keen to remind us, that our info centres offer knowledge, personal experience and advice for travel plans on the Peninsula and beyond, to locals as well as visitors.

Although the last open day for St Francis Op Shop was March 21st, during lockdown the Op Shop was able to continue to help those in need. It was also able to help a few folk in ‘want,’ supplying some jigsaws and books, to maintain pos i t ive menta l hea l th! At Level 2 a few of the ‘sorters’ got back to work in the Op Shop. We have been assured they restrained themselves from their usual hugs of greeting, and applied lashings of hand sanitizer and kept lists of those in attendance for contact tracing. Keen Op Shop volunteer Sharon Marr said, “You know, just being together is enough for the present.” The sorters involved have used the opportunity to have a good tidy up and move some of the stock around to make things easier for customers to see. Sharon’s husband, Albie has also been busy behind closed doors, giving the shop ceiling a fresh coat of paint and installing new LED lights to brighten the appearance. A s t h e O p S h o p Want to celebrate a special occasion in style,

Please don’t drop-off outside of these times. A h i g h l i g h t d u r i n g lockdown. . .the Op Shop received a very generous donation of $30 from a young boy, Eddie Fraser, who had sold some of his toys. Eddie knew that the Op Shop would still be helping others and decided to help them out! This was a real lift in spirits for all involved at the Op Shop, and they were loud and proud in their gratitude toward young Eddie!

"I'll lend you for a little time, a Child of mine," God said."For you to love the while she lives,
and mourn for when she's dead. She may be one or seven years, or twenty two or three,But will you, 'til I call her back, take care of her for me?
She'll bring her charm to gladden youAnd should her stay be brief,
You'll have her lovely memories as solace for your grief.I cannot promise she will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught down thereI want this child to learn.
I've looked the wide world over in my search for teachers trueAnd from the crowds that throng life's lane,
I have selected you.Now will you give her all your love; not think the labour vain
Nor hate me when I come to call, to take her back again?"I fancied that I heard them say,"Dear Lord, Thy Will be done!
For all the joy Thy Child shall bring, the risk of grief we'll run. We'll shelter her with tenderness, we'll love her while we may
And for the happiness we'll know, forever grateful stay. But should the angels call for her much sooner
than we planned,We'll brave the bitter grief that comes;
KnowingyouLordGod,we'lltrustandstand."
Everyday the memory of the lifeyou lived brings us tender joy.
We miss you so very, very much Sweet Ang.
