For a small group in town, Ta i rua Her i tage Soc iety is a dynamic group that has a huge work output. We have had shows and pageants, the Sailor’s Grave commemorations, educational sign boards erected, and now they are compiling a book about the Tairua Historic Cemetery on the Main Road. The Heritage team has a list of over 130 people who were buried there, though only 39 gravestones remain. Of these, several are too worn to read and some are unmarked. This
is making the task of accurately documenting the cemetery rather difficult, and they need our help. H e r i t a g e S o c i e t y spokesperson, Auriol Farquhar is keen to make contact with the family that tends the grave on the road front. She reports that it is always well-tended with flowers, but the details of who is buried there have faded over time, and the Heritage team is keen to put the names back on the grave-sites. Auriol explained that they are trying to include in the book
photos and extra information about the people who were buried in the cemetery. Do you have stories about or photos of family members or friends that they can use? “It would be a pity if there is more information out there, but it gets omitted from this publication. So many of our
