May the splendor of your majesty, O Lord, we pray, shed its light upon our hearts,

that we may pass through the shadows of this world and reach the brightness of our eternal home…

From the Collect Prayer for Epiphany

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

“Home is where the heart is.” We’ve all heard that trite old saying, but we also know there’s truth in it. We all need a place to call home, a place where we are safe, and accepted, and loved. Home is that place where we find unconditional acceptance, and where we can begin the life of grace and charity that radiates out to the world around us. The experience of a loving home translates into discipleship as the members of a family take the grace of their experience together out to all the world.

God knows the importance of the experience of home, and it is for that reason that he came to us and made his home among us. His Incarnation, taking our flesh, forever sanctified our own homes and made them places of grace. Famously, Joshua told the Israelites, “as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15). In our own experience, God sanctifies the homes of all who believe in him through the enduring presence of Christ, who came to call us all to holiness.

No home is perfect, and not every house is a home. Sometimes there is pain associated with the place one has to make one’s home. In some cases, that might mean that one isn’t at home, and in some cases, it might mean that God has yet to be invited there. In most cases, it at least means that we have to try a little harder, that we have to do some work in counseling, learning forgiveness, practicing acceptance.

In the end, as our collect prayer says today, our home in this world should at least foreshadow the brightness of our eternal home. Sometimes that will be hard work, sometimes it may seem to go unrewarded, but hopefully sometimes it will be blessed and always be graced.

One good way to make one’s house a home during this time of year is to bless one’s house. On Epiphany, this is often done by inscribing the year, along with a Cross and the initials C, M and B (representing the traditional names of the astrologers – Caspar, Melchoir and Balthasar) over the entry to the house, saying a prayer of blessing, and sprinkling the rooms with Holy Water. This can be done by a priest or deacon, or even by a lay person (appropriately the head of the household).

The prayer of blessing (https://www.catholicculture.org/culture/liturgicalyear/prayers/view.cfm?id=49) calls on God to bless the house and all who inhabit it, filling them with Christ’s light and causing them to have concern for others as a reflection of God’s love, experienced in their own homes. It’s a wonderful tradition to bless your homes each year, and call on God to be part of your family life in the year ahead.

Please know that Fathers John and Ramón and I pray for you and your homes every day. May they be blessed by the enduring presence of God and the rich goodness of Christ’s love.

Yours in Christ and His Blessed Mother, Father Pat Mulcahy, Pastor

We would like to thank all of you for your wonderful gifts over the Christmas season. Your baked goods, cards, and so many gifts remind us of how much you love us and we love you! Thank you for all that you have given us, and please know of our prayers for you each day.

Gratefully, Father Pat, Father John & Father Ramón

WINTER STUDY - Explore the most popular sermon ever delivered!

The Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7, contains some of Jesus’ most profound and most memorable teachings. What might these teachings have meant to his disciples and to the others who first heard them? How do they enhance our reading of the rest of the Gospel of Matthew, and how do they speak across the centuries to listeners today? How, if we pay careful attention to his words, does Jesus provide us a road map to living as God would have u live?

This is a 6-week study. One of the weeks, Biblical Scholar and Author, Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, will join us live!

Book Discussion - The Making of Irish America

Join others from the parish as we discuss the book: Dagger John: Archbishop John Hughes and the Making of Irish America

Acclaimed biographer John Loughery tells the story of John Hughes, son of Ire-land, a friend of William Seward and James Buchanan, founder of St. John’s Col-lege (now Fordham University), builder of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Ave-nue, pioneer of parochial-school education, and American diplomat. As archbish-op of the Archdiocese of New York in the 1840 and 1850s and the most famous Roman Catholic in America, Hughes defended Catholic institutions in a time of nativist bigotry and church burnings and worked tirelessly to help Irish Catholic immigrants find acceptance in their new homeland. His galvanizing and protecting work and pugnacious style earned him the epithet Dagger John. When the inter-ests of his church and ethnic community were at stake, Hughes acted with pur-pose and clarity.

This discussion will take place via Zoom. We will send you the link for the Zoom meeting the day before the meeting.

When: Tuesday, January 26 @ 7pm. Register at: https://www.smip.org/dagger-john

PRAYING THE "OUR FATHER" WITH JESUS Michael Simone, S.J. (Professor of Theology @ Boston College) helps us view the Lord’s Prayer through Jesus’s eyes. This is a personal project that Fr. Simone pursues in addition to his academic research and writing. Simone reminds us that the library of books we call the Hebrew Bible or the "Old Testament" was the only Bible Jesus knew. As Simone explores selected phrases or segments from the “Our Father,” he points us to passages and words that may have captivated the mind of Jesus when Jesus uttered that prayer. Simone’s reflections demonstrate to the modern Christian believer just how powerful a source of revelation the Hebrew Bible continues to be. Join us on Thursday Evenings at 7:00 PM on Zoom for this Four-part series:

Required Minimum Distributions and Qualified Charitable Distributions

Have you hit that age where you need to start dealing with required minimum distributions (RMDs)? If you are approaching 70-1/2 or over and you are thinking about making Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), St Mary Immaculate Parish would be blessed to be considered when you are making such a decision. Here is just one link that gives you a full explanation of QCDs and the resultant charitable and tax benefits to those parishioners over 70 1/2 dealing with Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs). https://www.thebalance.com/qualified-charitable-distributions-3192883

There are many options out there. We just wanted you to know you have options. Thank you so much for your generous support of St Mary Immaculate Parish.

2021 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Shining the Light of Christ through the 2021 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal

It is me for the 2021 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). Your gi is especially important this year, during the pandemic, as our diocese con nues to explore new and innova ve ways to serve those in need.

The 2021 theme is Shining the Light of Christ. The 30 ministries the CMAA supports allow parishes to join together to shine Christ’s light to the benefit of many, from the poor and vulnerable to seminarians and schoolchildren. No parish could provide all of these ministries on its own.

Our parish’s goal for the 2021 CMAA is $220,100, and 70 percent of any amount we raise over our goal will be returned to us. This is a great opportunity for our parish! Please review the materials you receive in the mail from the Diocese of Joliet and prayerfully reflect on your gi to this year’s annual appeal.

If you do not receive a CMAA mailing, please contact the parish office.

Please Note: You must be a registered parishioner for SIX months, prior to scheduling a Baptism or receiving a Sponsor/Godparent letter. Within that period you will need to attend one of the offered Welcome Gatherings or contact the parish office for a tour of the parish campus. Contact Laura Van Ham at [email protected] or 815-436-2651 ext. 887 with any questions.
