THE PRESIDENT´S CALL TO SERVICE AWARD 2010

DR. ORIEN L. TULP

Tuesday, 26 th April, 2011 .

Dr. Orien Tulp , President of the University of Science Arts and Technology, was the honored guest at aspecial dinner presentation ceremony held at the historic Olveston House, on Tuesday, April 26 th, 2011. Dr. Tulp was presented with the President’s Volunteer Service Award , in recognition of his longstanding humanitariancontributions of medical services totaling over 4,000 hours to numerous communities in the United States andabroad throughout his professional career. Established in the USA in 2003, this prestigious National award isgiven by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation by The President of the United States , andhonors individuals, families, and groups who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to lifetime volunteerservice.

During his career, Professor Tulp has conducted over 250 humanitarian medical civic action missions inthe USA and in remote areas of South America, predominantly Bolivia and Ecuador, where he established over 40rural medical clinics. In 1992, as Chief of Preventive Medicine, he played a significant role in assisting the Ministryof Health of Bolivia in the creation and distribution of educational materials during the cholera epidemic inneighboring Peru. On numerous occasions, he has provided medical assistance to Special Olympians at both the

regional and International level, including the International Winter Special Olympics and the Summer SpecialOlympics. In addition, he has provided medical assistance to countless high school athletic teams, thereby enablingtheir students to participate in competitive sports, and thereby enhancing their academic experiences.

The award and accompanying congratulatory letter from the White House was presented by Dr. StephenR. Barnhart, President of the International Business & Educational Consultants, of Grandview, MO, USA, whorepresented President Barack Obama and the Council at the ceremony. Professors (Drs) Perry Hudson, Dean of the USAT College of Medicine, Professor (Dr) Bruce Robinson, Associate Dean and Mrs Robinson, Dr. GeorgeEinstein, USAT Professor of Biomedical Sciences , and Dr Tulp’s son David Tulp and daughter Anjé Tulp werepresent for the award ceremony.

Dr Tulp has previously been awarded a Presidential Citation in 1996 by then President WilliamJefferson Clinton, the USA Legion of Merit, authorized by the US Congress and numerous other awards in

recognition of his longstanding Community and US military service .

El Doctor Tulp recibió el Premio al servicio voluntario del Presidente , en reconocimiento desus larga contribuciones humanitarias de servicios médicos, que suman un total de más de 4.000 horas anumerosas comunidades en los Estados Unidos y en el extranjero durante su carrera profesional. Establecidoen los Estados Unidos en 2003, este prestigioso Premio Nacional está dado por el Consejo del Presidente deservicio y participación ciudadana , por El Presidente de los Estados Unidos y rinde homenaje a individuos,familias y grupos que han demostrado un compromiso sostenido con el servicio de voluntarios durante toda lavida.

Durante su carrera, el Profesor Tulp ha llevado a cabo más de 250 misiones de acción cívica médicahumanitaria en los Estados Unidos y en áreas remotas de América del Sur, predominantemente en Bolivia yEcuador, donde estableció más de 40 clínicas rurales.
