HEADMASTER’S

UPDATEMonday March 12

Last week I had the honor of convening the first ever Cam-pus Teacher Leadership Team (TLT) meeting. The Campus TLT is comprised of one represen-tative from each of the LHS Academies plus the Lawrence Teacher’s Union President, Frank McLaughlin. The overall goal of the Campus TLT is to increase the level of commu-nication within and across all campus programs and to pro-vide a forum to increase teach-er voice and decision making on campus issues. The over-arching theme that emerged from our first meeting was the desire to come together as a campus and create a better sense of unity, cohesiveness and alignment. Representatives from each academy will be speaking with their respective TLTs during the next month to seek input from fellow teachers on potential ideas to further explore ways to achieve these goals. The Campus TLT is a step in the right direction to help us come together as a campus to improve communication,

collective decision making , and improve transitions from grade level to grade level.Campus Leadership Team Members:

MVC TITLE

The 2018 LHS Boy’s Basket-ball team won the Merrimack Valley Conference title this year for the first time since 2007, posting a regular-season record of 18-2. They enjoyed a thrilling run in the state playoffs, reaching the Division One North Sectional Finals for the first time since 2011. They opened their tourna-ment run with a 75-55 victory over Andover High School in the Round of 16 at home on Tuesday February 27th, then followed that with an 80-64 quarter final win over St. John’s Prep at home on

Saturday March 3rd. That win qualified them for the Division One North semi-finals, held at North Andover High School on Tuesday, March 6th. In that game, the Lancers knocked off the two-time defending state champions from Cambridge, the very team that eliminated the Lancers from the tour-nament last year, 68-65. On Saturday night, March 10th, the team faced off with the top-seeded Everett Crimson Tide in front of a huge crowd a Lowell’s Tsongas arena. Law-rence took three bus load of fans to the game, one of which

was donated by Common-wealth Motors. The Lancers were close all game, but Ev-erett came out on top in the end, 68-56. Lawrence finished the year with a season record of 21-3. All season the team was led by stars Luis Reynoso, Juan Felix Rodriguez, and Chris Ruiz, backed by a very strong supporting cast. They have also benefitted from great fan support. Congratulations to Coach Nunez and his squad on a great season!

GEAR UP LHS WINS STEM

PATHWAY GRANTS

By Mary Alice Murdoch: Law-rence High School was recent-ly awarded two STEM Career Pathway Capacity Grants in

partnership with Project Lead The Way (PLTW). Lawrence

High School will use the grant funds to start its PLTW program

by adding Computer Science Essentials and Introduction

to Engineering Design to our 2018-2019 Program of Studies. Follow up courses will be add-ed the following school year. Funds from the grant will also support teacher professional

development and the purchase of materials and equipment that will be used in these hands-on,

activity-, project, and prob-lem-based courses. These grants

will allow our students to take rigorous courses in our Tools

and Technology Pathway begin-ning as early as grade 10 lead-

ing to more advanced (including AP) courses in the upper grades

as well as gain experience as if they were working in these

fields. As a result, our students will be better prepared to pur-sue college majors and careers in the growing Technology and

Engineering fields.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING UPDATEThe SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) Steering Committee has been meeting regularly all year. The SEL Committee in-cludes Ann Hall, Deb Langlois, Rich Gorham, Carlos Cordero, Melissa Melendez, Nicole St. Clair, Kaitlin O’Donnell, and Caitlin Gilligan. Here is an update on our work. Feel free to reach out to any of us with ideas or comments. The committee is using the following definition of Social Emotional Learning:A Proactive system through which students and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make re-sponsible decisions.

The steering committee has completed many tasks in this first year of the initiative. We have: partnered with Project Adventure; polled the staff regarding their understanding of SEL; developed and present-ed an overview PREZI on SEL; pushed in to Senior Seminars with health and Wellness pre-sentations by Tufts graduate students; facilitated a suicide

prevention PD; completed our initial resource mapping; completed 2 focus groups (student/teachers); developed

a Student in Need placard; facilitated additional resources (Hospice grief group, Catie’s closet, bullying prevention for LIFE students) for students and teachers (post crisis counsel-ing) on campus. We are devel-oping an improved re-entry from hospitalization protocol; working with the YWCA to have services for rape crisis and domestic partner violence survivors; had hoped to facili-tate a preview webinar for cri-sis teams: Equipping Educators

with Effective Violence Pre-vention and Crisis Response Strategies (cancelled due to snow).

On our spring agenda are additional student, additional teacher, and several parent/community focus groups. With data from these stakeholder groups, we will bring together teams to re-state our mission and further develop SEL on campus. We have heard from many staff who are eager to ‘jump in’ and assist us with increasing SEL on campus. This is immensely gratifying and exciting. We will soon be bringing you in

16LHSNewsletterto partner with us as we move on to the next steps; using data to identify Professional Development needs and strategies to implement these PDs, particularly in the areas of SEL curriculum and instruc-tion and school-wide practices and policies. Our current pace is dictated by the need to implement SEL in a studied and careful manner, focusing on fidelity to the model, including all stakeholders, and building a dynamic, integrated, sustainable, comprehensive system of SEL for Lawrence High School.

Here is a list of resources (community and school-based) that we have on campus. We may have overlooked a few, so please feel free to let us know-we will keep this list up-dated. [email protected]
