An explosion is defined as 'A rapidincrease in volume and release ofenergy in an extreme manner’, usuallyaccompanied with the generation ofhigh temperatures and the release ofgases. An explosion creates at shockwave'.

Most common reactions are offlammable gases, vapors and crackeddusts - together with ambient oxygen. As a result of modern production tech-nologies and increased production ca-pacities, an explosion is a threatcompanies confront daily. Manufactu-ring processes which create organic orchemical dust caused by faster machi-nes, automatic conveying systems andair cleaning equipment increase therisk of a dust explosion. The finer thedust particle, the more severe the ex-plosion will be.

International guidelines includingNFPA 68, 69, ATEX 95 (Valid for manu-facturers of machines and plants) or

ATEX 137 (valid for operating compa-nies) require companies to consider theconsequences of a dust explosion to in-jured workers and damaged produc-tion plants.

Additionally, the economic risk tothe company due to plant shutdown, contaminated product or adverse pu-blicity requires consideration.

Special attention is required when eli-minating all possible potential sources ofignition such as; Mechanical or Electricallyproduced 'sparks', Frictional heat, Electro-static charges (See note* below), Weldingequipment etc. Not forgetting of course, the human factor. Due to the seeminglyendless sources for potential ignitions it isnot hard to imagine the difficulty in elimi-nating them all. Removal of the fuel is im-

possible as this is what is being producedby the process in the plant that we are con-sidering protecting. Removal of Oxygen isfeasible but can only be achieved throughvary expensive processing. The security li-mits here are also rapidly reached and therisk of a dust explosion cannot be excluded. Therefore a constructive and efficient ex-plosion protection regime is required andessential.

THREE BASIC REQUIREMENTS HAVETO BE CONSIDERED IN A MODERNEXPLOSION PROTECTION SOLU-TION:

1. PROFITABILITYThe protection solution has to be economical to implement, operate and maintain.

2. RELIABILITYThe protected facility has to remainpermanently and optimally avai-lable for production. A break in daily operations, due to false triggering, must be avoided.

3. SAFETYPeople and machine must be insured of an explosion protected environment, through constructiveand effective directives.

ALL OF THESE REQUIREMENTS ARE MET BY REMBE®

EXPLOSION SAFETY SYSTEMS.

EXPLOSION VENTING WITH TRIPLE-SECTIONRUPTURE DISCS/PANELS

The domed triple section rupture discs/pa-nels developed by REMBE® have a provenpedigree and have been successfully pro-tecting a variety of industrial plants formore than 37 years, distinguishing them-selves by their sturdy construction and re-liability.

The triple section ODV Rupture Disc/Panelis mainly used for applications with low ormiddle burst pressures. The burst pressureis determined by the burst element withintegrated breaking points and its sealingpart. Breaking points are made by CNCcontrolled laser micro-cutting machines. This enables the highest possible precisionthereby guaranteeing the required burstpressure within tolerance.

ODV's are applied to working pressuresup to 80% of the specified burst pressure(80% operating ratio).

SINGLE LAYER EXPLOSION VENTS

EDP

EX-GO-VENT

EX-GO-VENT rectangular- and trapezium panel

EDP single-layer rupture panel – provides easy and quick mounting

The Single Layer EDP explosion panel is recommended for protection against fluctuating or cyclic working pressures. The Domed construction provides highstability up to a pressure ratio of 80%.The rated breaking points (Pat. No. EP 0773 393) are integrated within the moun-ting frame. The Domed construction alsogreatly reduces contamination. Sterilityand cleaning is simplified (SIP/CIPCleaning).

Usually the EDP is mounted directly onto aWall. Installation of the EDP Vent Frame isuncomplicated and is NOT torque depen-dent.

The EX-GO-VENT incorporating bionicstructures guarantees an extraordinarystability in order to suit most standard applications.

Unlike other manufacturers options theEX-GO-VENT is NOT torque dependent during installation. Typically, mounting is directly made onto even walls or round-shaped equipment, e.g.; cyclones, filters, silos, etc.

Conventional explosion venting with a rupture disc

The Q-Rohr®-3 explosion protection system is a provenreliable product designed and engineered follow-

ing extensive research and development culmi-nating in the most innovative and efficient flame-less venting product on the world market today.

The consistent demand from our customers is theneed for a protection system where the flame and dust

distribution can be limited to a point where the systemcan be kept indoors. The Q-Rohr®-3 has been designed

with customer driven criteria such as; zero maintenance, un-limited life-span, huge reduction in the generated temperatu-

res and effective dust retention. The Q-Rohr®-3 has been provento meet all of these demands. In a thermo graphical investigation

of a dust explosion, it has been recorded that when using a Q-Rohr®-3 there is a huge reduction in temperatures generated.

…PROTECTS AGAINST POTENTIAL CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE

Only the original construction of the

Q-Rohr®-3guarantees the full effectiveness in the event of a dust explosion. Copies and imitations present an unnecessary safety risk.

After cleaning the flame arrester and exchanging the rupture disc, the Q-Rohr is ready for use again.

An optional fireproof cover keeps theoutside clean.

The Q-Rohr®-3 system is the only indoorexplosion device recognized worldwide byNFPA68 and accepted also by VDI-3673and prEN 14797. It consists of an integra-ted REMBE® rupture disc which vents theexplosion wave in a controlled mannerwithin the Q-Rohr®-3 assembly. Flamegases with temperatures higher than2,732 °F are cooled down to less than 195 °F via energy transfer within the specially developed stainless steel meshfilter inlet. This reduces the expanding gasvolume as it extinguishes the flame. Dustretention is guaranteed by the mesh filterensuring that no burnt or unburnt dustparticles pass through the Q-Rohr®-3 as-sembly. Additionally, the pressure rise andincreased noise level associated with freevented explosions are massively reducedto negligible levels. After an explosionevent the Q-Rohr®-3 is re-usable imme-diately after cleaning and replacement of the REMBE® Rupture Disc assembly.

The Q-Box II flame-reduced explosion vent can be used to great effect eitheroutdoors or indoors. When used indoorsit dispenses with the headaches of posi-tioning complex, cumbersome and expensive vent ducting.

The Q-Box II providing low pressure resistance, effectively eliminates flameand heat emissions thereby allowing easyindoor installation and positioning of relevant machinery.

Rectangular connections of the Q-Box IIcomplement the dimensions of the stan-dard rupture panels thus allowing retro-fitting of Q-Box II for existing installati-ons.

Available in two standard sizes Q-Box II offers the best possible solution and the perfect safety system for indoor devices such as elevators when compared to often poorly designed and inefficient venting ducts.

EXPLOSION-, SPARK- AND FLAME FRONT ISOLATION…

EXKOP® II Pat.-No. EP 05 59 968

Proven isolation of pipelines with EXKOP®II

The EXKOP® system provides safe and economic and easy explosion-, spark- andflame front isolation. The pinch valvesprotect interconnected equipment byhigh speed closure of a fast acting rubberhose.

The valve is triggered by 100 % reliable signal from the maintenance-free triple-section rupture disc, the Q-Rohr®-3 or byIR-, pressure or temperature sensors. The complete system is failsafe due to anintegrated pressure storage tank and self-monitoring controller. In case of explosionthe plant personnel can reset the EXKOP®

system quickly and easily after inspection.Plant downtime is reduced to a minimum.

The compact design makes it possible toinstall the system at any site independent-ly of the building-in position. Comparedwith the immense mass acceleration ofknife gate valves during closing operationthe space-saving quench valve does notrequire any special supporting structure,e. g. braces or bases.

The EXKOP® MINI has especially been developed for applications with 1-2 pinchvalves. Two separate inputs (rupture pa-nels, Q-Rohr®, spark detectors, etc.) canbe combined with two QV II valves.

The use of the system is simple and worksacc. to the „one button easy handling”philosophy. As usual all events are obser-ved by a ring storage memory.

With the non-return explosion valve series Q-Flap explosions in nearly all industrial sec-tors can effectively be isolated. The Q-Flap is certified as a protective system acc. to EUguideline 94/9/EG (ATEX 95) and approved for decoupling explosions of organic and inor-ganic dusts.

In case of an explosion the Q-Flap closesdue to the pressure front spreading wit-hin the ductwork. The explosion flameand the pressure cannot strike back theductwork. Personnel working at capturingpoints or downstream system parts areprotected against the explosion effects. The flap damping element prevents theflap to open shortly after an explosiondue the appearing low pressure.

The passive non-return Q-Flap protects horizontal aspiration lines with a flow velocity between 15-30 m/s.

Extensive research and testing under real explosion conditions enabled ap-proval of the Q-Flap for St 1 or St 2 (max. KST-Value = 300 bar x m/s). Q-Flap is applicable for reduced pressure (Pred) up to 0.5 bar (7.25 Psi).

Additionally the Q-Flap Plus offers a wear-and-tear sensor that monitors theabrasion that could possibly occur on the stainless steel flap. The Q-Flap is alsoequipped with an integrated cloggingsensor that indicates any kind of productaccumulation underneath the seats whichensures safe closing of the flap.

The Q-Bic system is suitable for indoor applications where the explosion cannotbe discharged to the outside atmosphere. It extinguishes the explosion at the pointof ignition.

Combustions are identified and imme-diately suppressed due to the prompt blowing out of dry powder in the endan-gered area. The dry powder extracts theheat. The explosion is inerted. As the explosion is limited consequential lossesare reduced to a minimum.

ACCESSORIES / OPTIONS

BIRD (Burst Indicator REMBE® Design) -ideal for retrofitting

Type BIRDThe BIRD Signaling unit is offered for existing rupture disc or explosion panel installations that do not have a Signalingdevice installed. A ceramic bar incorpora-ting electrical conductors is mounted inthe flow direction downstream of thedisc/panel. When the disc/panel actuatesthe element breaks (fragments) and theclosed circuit is interrupted.

SSL fibre optic signaling unitIf the optic fibre cracks due to the move-ment of the rupture panel the light stre-am of this waveguide is interrupted. Thedownstream optoelectrical converter im-mediately provides an electrical signalwhich can also be used for electronic dataprocessing. The SSL fibre optic signalingunit is aluminium coated and heat resi-stant up to 932° F.

Triple-section-rupture discincl. signaling unit SK

Actuation of rupture discs and explosionpanels can be detected by utilizing a si-gnaling cable. The Signaling device is ultralow current and is intrinsically safe andoperates on a simple Open-Closed princi-ple (normally closed). Different standardtypes are available:

Type SK / RSK / SRThe Signaling cable is installed at thebreaking point of the disc/panel. Whenthe disc/panel actuates, the closed circuitis interrupted due to the cable break. TheSignaling cable is a well proven reliablemethod. No additional assembly is requi-red and no moveable parts remain.
