'LOD Team arrived at Bat Team 46, 3Bn 187th Inf, 101st Abn Div at 1535 hrs on20 Jan 1970. SP5 Steenberg and SP4 Miller were told by SGT Jackson, at(Battalion Advisory Team) Team Leader, that a suspected Booby trap had beenplaced in the school at AP Hien Luong Village (YD 637 316), upon arrivingat the incident scene, the r;OD team cleared the area and then entered theclass room which contained the suspected Booby -Trap. There was a hole inthe center of the room, which previously has been covered by a board, lightly coated with cement so as to cake it look like part of the floor. In the hole were three prongs barer sticking thru the dirt. SP5 Steinbergcommented that it looked like the pressure Nevi. ^e for éither an 224 orì16A1, both bounding type mines. The EOD Team vegan clearing the dirt awayfrom the item when SP4 hiller discovered a trip wire leading to the pulldevice on the fuze siue. The wire was loose and tucked under the edge ofthe concrete. The wire was cut and tied around the fuze body. At this timea piece of wire was inserted at the top of the pressure device to stop thecocked striker from going down. Upon digging further the top was uncoveredand the item was identified as an U16Á1 Bounding Mine. The team also encounteredtwo flat sticks, wedged between the mine body and the conurette, it wasdecided that the best approach would be to sink another hole about a footaway and dig over and up under the mine. SP5 Steinberg decided that animprovised shape charge would be the best metnod and SP4 Miller suggestedthe plastic Ogive cover for a 40mm M406 Grenade. The cover was placedin a ball of .approximately 3/4 lb Comp C -4, primed, and placed 15 inchesfrom the mine. After the detonation the EOD Team re- entered the roomand discovered a second hole approximately 8" in Diameter. The cement

At 0730 bra on 11 February 1970, BOO received a call that there were two liveRAG rounds at FSB File, 2d Fn/502d In!, 1st Bde, 101st Ain Div (Amb1), thisturned out to be the understatement of the year. BCD left the XXIV Corps VIFpad at 0800 and arrived at FSB Rifle at 8813 hrs. It turned out that the FSBhad been hit by incoming rockets, tartars, and sappers the previous night. The14D Team reported to the FSB Commander and were told that there were approximatelytenNYC. bodies is and around the FSB perimeter and that there were dud rocketsand satchel charges all over the hill. The team, consisting of SP5 Steinbergand SP5 Duffey, begar,, their cleanup at 0830 hrs. Ten kWh bodies were strippednail the other asso.-ced goodies around the FSB were policed up. Upon enteringone bunker which had taken a direct hit from an LFG- 7, BOD ,as informed that therevas a grenade in the dirt in the bunker that had no pin. SP5 Duffey peeked itout or the dirt by the spoon and grenade body and sure enough, it had no pin.Attar getting permission from a stray LTC, who dust happened to be followingthe teat. around, SP5 Duffey threw the grenade outside the wire where it detonated.after working for several hours and pilling the collection of ordnance outside theTOC, it was decided that, all D1-2 fuses and blasting caps would be blown thereand all satchel charges and SPG-2 rockets would be transported back to Pisa Baifor.diBposal. After saute argent with the S-2 Officer, it vas decided thatBED would blow the Stases and caps in a tiring pit approximately 10' gon theentrance to the TOC. The OA was prised and heavily sandbagged and went withouta flaw, except for throwing a little sand on the CG of the 101st, who didn'tthink it necessary to move out of the way. í'h.4 ROO Tema also removed the fuzefrom one dud -fired B-40 as one of our "friends" brought it tap to us and dropped

On 20 March 70 at 0900 EOD received a cal]. from S-3 1/506th Inf for SADsupport at FSB Granite which had been hit the night before, leaving theFSB covered with satchel charges, and RPCr.2 +s. BAD was also informed thatthe FSB was socked in with fog and they would be notified when the firstbird would be able to fly out. At 0940 another call was received sayingthat a bird would be waiting at Curabee Pad. At 0945 BBD departed forFSB Granite, by air, and arrived at FSB Granite at 1015. At the FSBBUD was informed of the situation and told they could have any thing the FSHhad to help speed up the operation. Upon looking the area over theEOD team, consisting of SSG Quails and SP4 !Miller, decided all thesatael charges in the world bad been left there. It was also decidedthat cutting each individual charge open and removing the cap was tootime consuming since they were all made of C-4, both US and USSR type.EOD then requested and received a four man detail to help in the police up.All charges were checked by SOD then the detail, put them carefully intowooden ammo craves. When the bulk of the charges were checked the EODream was informed of the location of the RPG -gas. At this time it was fouudout there were 10 daed PA around the area. The SOD team checked andcleaned all bodies pclicing up 10 PG -2's, more satchel charges, and oneM-26 hand grenade (us) . The BCD team then checked the 81ssa mortar pitswksich were hit very hard. 3 rounds of HE were considered hazardous and tobe blown with the satchel charges. Then an RPG.2 was discovered inthe side of a hill with the rocket motor burned. It was decided todestroy the round in place by detsaation. Also s dud 81mm mortar HE wee

During the general police up of the rubbish two M33 Grenades with hung strikerswere found. EOD accomplished a degree of safety by removing the striker spring, and the grenades were addod to the other miseelaneous explosives and roundswhich by this time also included two X79 40mm with frag holes in them. At thetime &)D was informed that a Chinook helicopter had crashed and was burningon Camp Evans in the POL area and that it was heavily armed and an BCD teamwas needed immediately. $íl93 informed the TOC that as soon as some helpwas received to carry the exploosivee down the hill and they could be detonatedthey would be ready to go. After much hassle, everything got to the bottomof the hill and the explosives were detonated and E3Û prepared to take a birdto Camp Evans to report to the "emergency situation ".

It might be interesting to note that when the ET Team did arrive at the coptercrash they were met by another team from Phu Bai who bad been there for severalhours.

During this time there were about 10 or 12 detonations in the ago area)0 meters away, which was still burning. Also 82mm and 120mm mortars

were coming in every 3 to 4 minutes.

The team had just taken a short break and SFC Wilkinson was talkingto COL Harrison, 3rd Bde, 101st Abn Commanding Officer. SFC Wilkinsonand the COL had just stepped behind a blast wall when a mortar landed5 ft. away. This round resulted in 1 killed, 6 wounded and COLHarrison and SFC Wilkinson were blown into the bunker and knocked out.The COL and SFC Wilkinson both had total loss of hearing. S ?5 Watson

had minor wounds on the elbow and lower arm. All casualties wereevacuated to C /326th M1ed Bn at Camp Evans where SFC Wilkinson was toldhe did not have bursted eardrums, but would not hoer for awhile. allcasualties were evacuated to 85th Evac Hospital in Phu Bai. The teamreturned to Phu Bai at 2130. It was decided that due to darkness, nothing further could be done that night. Transportation for another¡UD Team to Ripcord for as early as possible on 19 July was requested throughD TOC, 101st Airborne Division.

On the morning of 19 July 1970 at approximately 1030 hrs, a team fromthis unit, CPT Breland, SSG Lynch and SP5 Duffey, departed 2nd B1e, HeavenPad at Phu Bai for FSB Ripcord, arriving at the FSB about 1115 hrs. CPT

Breland was met by Lt Col Lucas, Battalion Commander 2/506. At that timeCPT Breland was given a brief summary of the present situation.

While making a survey of the area, the END Team discovered their workwas going to be greatly hampered due to the fact that armed ICM's wereeverywhere. Other items encountered were 105mm HE, WP, HC Smoke, Illumination,M33 grenades, M79 rounds out of the casing, and assorted pyrotechnic devices.

At 1130 hrs the SOD Team started the initial clearing operation of thehelicopter pad which had first priority, so that the nearly exausted suppliescould be replenished and a new battery of 105's brought in. Several timesduring the morning and early afternoon, work was interrupted by incoming

enemy mortar rounds.

Due to the time factor involved, the enormous task of clearing the area,

and constant harrasment by enemy gunners, CPT Breland made a re- evaluationof the situation and decided another team was necessary. The call for

assistance was made to the 59th HOD at Quang Tri. They dispatched a team.

Continuation of Unusual Incident Page #3

Resuming work shortly after 120C hrs a new problem p.^esentec itself. In the area of the downed Chinook, high explosive and white phosphorous105mm rounds again began cooking off in the still-smoldering fire. A

detail was mustered to water down the area so work could resume.

At approxitdtely 1330 hrs., another enemy mortar attack was launched.

SSG Lynch was wounded, received medical attention and continued working.

CPT Breland received word the other r7DD team from the 59th, CPT Guffey

and SSG Harlin, were at FSB O'Rielly, and, due to the incoming fire Ripcordwas receiving, could not immediately be inserted onto Ripcord.

About 1500 hrs a chopper did manage to get in with the EOD team aboard.CI-T Breland and CPT Guffey toured the area, after which they briefed bothteams, and the work was continued.

By 1530 hrs., enough debris had been cleared away so that bull dozerscould be brought up to assist in the clearing. At approximately 1600 hrs the

area started receiving sporadic sniper fire from the treeline and the base

of the hill. This sniper fire continued off and on for most of thq rest

of the afternoon. Another mortar attack hit at approximately 1630 nrs.,

inflicting light casualties on the base.

At about 1730, LTC Lucas decided that work should be knocked off sothat his troops could prepare their night defensive positions before dark.

The five -man EOD element was flown to Phu Bai and transportation was again

laid on for the return to Ripcord on the next day.

At 0700 on 20 July 1470, a team from this unit comprised of CPT Breland,

SSG Lynch, SP5 Duffey, SP5 Watson, and SSG Harlin from the 59th HOD in

,,uang Tri departed Phu Bai for FSB Ripcord. Operations this day were pretty

much the same as on the 19th. There were still, periodic cook -offs and

incoming enemy mortar fire throughout the day.

The team cleared all ICM +s and segregated them in one area to be

destroyed later that day. Organizing "bucket brigade" lines, all 105mm

rounds were cleared off the helicopter pad and placed in slings to be

transported out by Chinook, since the fire base had no adequate area

nearby in which the rounds could be blown.

Continuation of Unusual Incident Page #4

By 1600 hrs the area had been cleared of any immediate danger, and themain work left fer that day was disposing of the Mils. CPT Breland decidedbecause cf increasing mortar fire and lack of adequate bunkers he wouldreturn part of the tee.4 to Camp Evans. Nlile 3SG Ban6140SP5 Duffey1*ndSP5 Watson were waiting for the helicopters they were subjected to mortarfire which seamed to be zeroed in on the pad. The chopper did get in,however, and picked up the team while the base was under fire.

At approximately 1730 hrs CPT Breland and SSG lynch eet up the shotand destroyed the 'Ws. This being accomplished, CPT 1 -eland and SSG Idynchwere flown out and returned to Camp Enna, about 1800 hrs.

At 0900, 21 July V, a team consisting of CPT Breland and SFC Wilkinsonwas inserted on FSB Ripcord. The teats was notified there were severalIOM's still on the ground-. Due to the location of most of these items;,they had to be carefully moved by hand to an area they could be blown.During the entire uperations, enemy mortar fire continued approximatelyevery ten or fifteen minutes. ñtiery time a chopper landed, three to fiverounds could be expected.las the shot was being readied, an enemy 120maMortar landed ttenty -fi9e feet below the team, killing one person andwounding four. The E00 team ateabsrs were luckily unhurt. The teamfinished disposing of the IOM's- and requested extraction from the firebase. The team was extracted .at approximately 1230 hrs and arrived backin Phu Bai at 1300.
