BUILDING RESILIENCE During the early school years, home life and family relationships are still the biggest influence on a child’s development. Good family relationships and lots of positive attention are just what your child needs to learn and grow and build resilience that will be essential in later life. Helpful articles on talking and listening to your children, handling tantrums, negotiating tricky behaviour and building self-esteem can be found on the website www.raisingchildren.net.au. This site contains a host of easy to understand information on parenting children from babies to teenagers. School A to Z – the department’s new online school community for parents – is offering you a chance to win one of five iPad2 devices. To be in the running, visit http:// www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/about/win-an-ipad and sign-up to receive regular updates packed with information and resources to help you support your child’s learning and development. School A to Z offers you practical help with homework and study, child wellbeing and health, technology use and keeping kids safe online. Regards, Sandra Armstrong Principal CONGRATULATIONS KYLE Congratulations Kyle McIlveen who competed in the State Athletics high jump event last week. Ulmarra P.S. is very proud of Kyle’s commitment, effort and good sportsmanship. Kyle, who can almost jump his own height, has been a stand out athlete in many events over the years and is to be commended for his efforts. SCHOOL SATISFACTION SURVEY We have extended the deadline for the completion of this survey until midnight, Friday, 28th October. Thank you to the families who have already completed the survey. We encourage you all to do so, so that we can have opinions that represent the majority of our school community. The survey can be located at the school website www.ulmarra-p.schools.nsw.edu.au with links on the Home Page. Paper copies are available from the school office. TOURNAMENT OF THE TIMES The annual Tournament of The Times Challenge was held last week in our computer lab. Students from 14 small schools took the 100 question challenge with great care, commitment and concentration to record their combined accuracy and time scores. The overall Junior Champion was Rachel Rollings of Ulmarra. The overall Senior Champion was Jacob McMahon of Chatsworth Island. The senior position was very closely contested with only 1 second between first, second and third places. Well done to Ulmarra student Dylan O’Neill who was the third placed senior. Congratulations to Rachel and Jacob for their winning performances. The winning school for 2011 was Ulmarra. Well done to all competitors. We look forward to next year’s Tournament. CLARENCE RIVER REGIONAL FILM FESTIVAL On Tuesday 1st November, “The Giant Eel” will screen along with other short films from Clarence Valley schools and TAFE, at the Saraton as part of the inaugural Clarence Valley Short Film Festival. This festival is not to be confused with the Big River Film Festival which is in its 7th year this year and will take place at SGHS on Wednesday, 23rd November. The Big River Festival will premiere this year’s film, “Ned Kelly” and will also feature new releases from other Clarence Valley schools. The Giant Eel is an animation of a local Aboriginal Dreamtime story and was created by students at Ulmarra in 2008. The festival will begin at 6pm. It is a great animation and this is the first time it has been seen on such a large screen. Please come along, support our budding film makers and our own company, “UPS Productions, Never Down…………….” and enjoy the evening’s entertainment! INDIGENOUS STUDENT ART EXHIBITION This exhibition includes art works from indigenous students across the Clarence Valley and will show at the Grafton Regional Art Gallery from 26th October till the 11th December. Don’t miss it! NEWSLETTER We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land we work on; the Yaegl and Gumbaynggirr people.
