Hope in the Face of Adversity: A Life About Strength, Gratitude, and Joy

Born with Usher Syndrome Type III, a rare genetic disorder, Rebecca Alexander has been losing both her

sight and hearing since she was a teenager. Today, she is a psychotherapist with two master’s degrees from Columbia University. She is also a spin instructor, volunteer, and ex-treme athlete who has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. She says, “We have all these reminders that we’re not pretty enough or thin enough or we don’t have the best job or whatever it is, instead of focusing on all the things we do have and are capable of. And it feels so much better to focus on the things that you can do. Why do we spend so much time focusing

on things we can’t?”At JBSC on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:00 pm, Ms. Alexander will share her

powerful story of hope, motivation, and perseverance. Day after day, challenge after challenge, she stresses how important it is to be grateful for every sound, every sight, and every sense. The author of Not Fade Away: A Memoir of Senses Lost and Found, Ms. Alexander recounts what she has lost — the sound of a whisper, seeing the sky full of stars — and the gratitude for everything she still has. This program is sponsored by the Edlavitch-Tyser Family Relations Forum.

“Tales from the Forgotten Kingdom” at Pollin Music Shabbat

We invite you to embark on a musical trek to kingdoms long

forgotten and bustling towns now vanished at our Friday, March 11 Shabbat service, which begins at 6:00 pm at Temple. The Guy Mendilow Ensemble will share “Tales from the Forgotten Kingdom,” with stories of vagabond queens, pauper poets, and lovers lost to the sea, all set to spellbinding arrangements of old Sephardi songs worthy of symphonic film scores.

“Tales from the Forgotten King-dom” is a sonic adventure masterfully brought to life by the Guy Mendilow Ensemble, an award-winning quintet of world-class musicians from Israel, Palestine, Argentina, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The Chicago Tribune calls this program “…music of hope and affirmation, sophisticated in its delivery but easily accessible to listeners anywhere.”

This service is part of Washington Hebrew Congregation’s Irene & Abe Pollin Music Program Initiative.

Amram Lecture to Consider “Does Terrorism Work?”Bruce Hoffman, an expert in terrorism and insurgency and Director of the Cen-ter for Security Studies at Georgetown University, will explore the controversial question of the efficacy of political vio-lence in an Amram lecture on Sunday, March 13 at 10:30 am at Temple.

Focusing on Israel’s struggle for independence between 1917 and 1947, he will examine the role of the Irgun, the Zionist paramilitary organization,

in ending British rule over Palestine. “Under the right conditions and with the appropriate strategy and tactics,” he suggests, terrorists can prove successful in achieving their objectives.

Professor Hoffman’s new book on the subject, Anonymous Soldiers, won the 2015 Everett Family Foundation Jewish Book of the Year Award and has been praised by The New York Times as “skillfully” written and “thought-provoking.” In it, he recounts the Irgun bombing of Jerusalem’s King David Hotel on July 22, 1946. The attack, which killed 92 people, was the most lethal terrorist attack in history at the time and set in motion a chain of events that resulted in Great Britain’s termination of its Mandate over Palestine and the establishment of Israel as a nation.

Professor Hoffman also serves a senior fellow at the U.S. Military Academy’s Combating Terrorism Center. His previous books include Inside Terrorism, The Evolution of the Global Terrorist Threat: From 9/11 to Osama Bin Laden’s Death, and The Failure of British Military Strategy Within Palestine, 1939–1947. He comes to WHC in cooperation with the Jewish Book Council.

Twelve WHC Adults to Become B’nei Mitzvah

Becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah as an adult is a unique and wonderful experience: the learning takes on new depth, and the experience takes on richer meaning. For a dozen adults, this has meant studying with Gerdy Trachtman every week for four semesters. Together, they delved into Jewish texts, discussed holidays and life cycle events, grappled with Jewish theology, found their way through Jewish history, and mastered the read-ing of Hebrew — both in the prayer book and in the Torah.

We invite the entire Congregation to join us at Temple on Saturday, March 12 at 5:30 pm when our adult B’nei Mitzvah students — Ellen Barth, Cathy Certner, Diana Conn, Barbara Faigen, Carole Hurwitz, Harvey Kupferberg, Jared McBride, Fran Miller, Eleanor Palmer, Irene Silverstone, Sarah Wesson, and Marcia Westcott — read from the Torah in the Kaufmann Sanctuary and become B’nei Mitzvah.

Wednesday Afternoon Study Resumes March 2

We invite you to join us at Wednesday Study, an hour each week with WHC congregants and clergy where we explore the relevance of ancient Jewish texts on our modern lives.

One of the gifts that Judaism has given the world is the exchange of ideas and insights that can come from

chevruta — study in a small-group setting where we collectively peel back the layers of a particular text. Together over coffee and surrounded by friends, we will engage in a dialogue that brings new meaning and understanding to the words of our tradition. Wednesday Study meets each week at Temple from 1:00 – 2:00 pm and begins on Wednesday, March 2. No registration is necessary. For more information, please contact Layne Weiss, [email protected] or 202-895-6307.

25th Mitzvah Day. Find the project that makes you

For 25 years, WHC’s 2,500+ families have come together each year for a day dedicated to tikkun olam. We’ve played with preschoolers whose home is a shelter and sung along with seniors who reside at Ring House. We’ve strengthened kids’ teeth with dental check-ups and brought out smiles with face painting. We’ve painted buildings and planted flowers. We’ve donated blood, swabbed our cheeks, and saved lives. We’ve chopped, cooked, stuffed, spread, and packed meals to feed the hungry.

Every project helps repair our world. Every hand makes a difference. Together, we are strong! This year, we are 25 Strong!

Israeli Arab Life at Jewish Film Festival Join WHC and the Greater Wash-ington Forum on Israeli Arab Issues (GWFIAI)at the DCJCC on Sunday, February 28 at 12:30 pm for a film and panel discussion about the daily lives and challenges faced by Arab citizens of Israel.

The afternoon will begin with the screening of Women in Sink, an inci-sive and powerful documentary by Is-raeli filmmaker Iris Zaki. It is the story of a hair salon in the heart of the Arab community in Haifa, where friend-ships between Arab and Jewish women demonstrate a model of coexistence.

Following the film, the 6th Annual Community Education Day on Arab Citizens of Israel brings together Reem Younis, co-founder of Nazareth-based global high-tech company Alpha Omega and role model for Israeli Arab entrepreneurial success, and Tziona Koenig-Yair, Israel’s first Equal Em-ployment Opportunity Commissioner. Rabbi Sid Schwarz, co-chair of the GWFIAI, will moderate the conversa-tion, and a reception and World Café-style discussion will follow.

Tickets for this event may be pur-chased online, wjff.org/dayofed.
