Message from the Deans

The 50th graduating class of the Uni-versity Of Rhode Island, College Of Phar-macy left Kingston on a sunny Sunday, May 18, as an enthusiastic group blessed with camaraderie, good humor and excel-lent professional skills. The faculty and staff of the College who gathered with them that day to celebrate their success were very proud and pleased to welcome these professional colleagues to practice. College is an interesting time in one’s life. It is a time when you begin to mold your character and your personality as an adult. In the case of this College’s pro-fessional degree students, it is also when they develop the professional, charitable and caring aspects of their lives that will carry them through their professional ca-reer. We sent them off knowing that they have developed exemplary professional standards for involvement in the profes-sion, their communities and their area of practice. Many also have already contrib-uted to their College. Our hope is that they will stay connected with the College and try to give back to others who follow in their footsteps over the next 50 years. We intend to develop communications and services offered over the internet and through in-person programs of which we hope they will all take advantage. We expect that we will enjoy seeing many of them at our various professional associa-tion meetings, alumni receptions and events, and even more importantly, we hope to track their career progress, suc-cesses and impact on our nation’s health by having them let us know of each and every significant step they take. As was said many times on graduation day, the College and University are measured by the success of our graduates. We want to know how they are doing so we may as-sure that our curriculum continues to meet

their successor’s needs. Additionally, we intend to enhance our availability and capabilities to be of assistance to our alumni whenever they might need further help from us. Our service to our gradu-ates will no longer end with delivery of the diploma. We intend to be here to help with career moves, to improve their satis-faction with their chosen profession, and to help continuously improve their al-ready excellent competence in their cho-sen area of practice. We are sending this graduation class off with the tools necessary to be suc-cessful in their career and life. We re-minded them at graduation that now it was up to them, and we gave them some sage advice from someone with whom they probably have some familiarity. Jerry Seinfeld, when asked for the keys to success, said there are three things; First, work hard….if you need to know how hard to work, contact him late Friday af-ternoon in his office….Second, fall in love with what you do, passion for your life’s work is the key to happi-ness….Third, pay attention to everything and everyone. If you are always watching and listening, you will learn and grow wise in life, and that is truly an invaluable reward. As a final note, they need to re-member to be persistent in their pursuit of their career goals and happiness in their lives. To that end we remind them of one of Dean Jordan’s favorite quotes by Cal-vin Coolidge. “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuc-cessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a prov-erb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race” Sincerely, Ronald P. Jordan, R.Ph. COLLEGE OF PHARMACY ANNUAL PICNIC

By Kelly Orr The 6th Annual College of Pharmacy Picnic was held Sunday afternoon, April 27th, at Mackal Field. Though the weather was a bit overcast (third year in a row), we had a tremendous turnout. Over 200 stu-dents, graduate students, staff, faculty and family attended! Food and games were the main attraction, with a few raffles mixed in. The URI APhA-ASP Chapter raf-fled off an iPod Touch as part of their fundraising efforts. However, many came out just for one thing: Red Sox tickets. Jim Gallagher of CVS/Caremark pulled through once again with those highly coveted tickets for a fierce raffle. This year's long sleeve t-shirt was designed by Stephanie Sharkey (P3). The t-shirt depicted several red and black capsule shapes moving up the sleeve onto the front with the Annual Picnic logo, very fitting for the Col-lege of Pharmacy! The College of Pharmacy would like to thank CVS/Caremark for their generous donation in supporting the annual picnic. Jen Morrow (P3) and Amanda Silva(P3) of the Student Leadership Council served as co-chairs for the picnic planning and could not have pulled it off without the assistance of Denise Gorenski from Student Affairs. Thanks to all of you for another great event!

COLLEGE OF PHARMACY SENIOR BANQUET

The Class of 2008's Senior banquet was held on May 2 at the Quonset ‘O’ Club. One Hundred-eighty revelers including graduating seniors, faculty, staff and guests at-tended this event. This annual event marks the culmination of both the didactic and experiential training for these newly minted Pharm.D.’s. A variety of awards were presented to more than a dozen seniors, recogniz-ing excellence in academics, clinical and community practice, research, and service. The evening was topped off with the traditional memory lane slide show and "faculty roast" conducted this year by seniors Mike Smith, Chris Morrison, Rosie Mean and Corinne Zanone. This in turn was answered by the “Not Ready for Prime Time" awards presented by Dr. Anne Hume.
