From the Principal This week we hosted visitors from a neighbouring school who were very interested in finding out about our Jolly Phonics program in the prep area. We implemented this program a couple of years ago and have found it amazing to watch the children’s growth in learning their sounds and knowing which letter symbols match each sound. This has not only been beneficial in spelling and writing but it has also helped their reading as they can use the sounds to decode words. The preps are not just learning single letters, they are also looking at different letter combinations for the same sound eg ‘ch/tch’and are learning complex combinations for one sound eg ‘sh’. This is very advanced work and the Preps are handling it beautifully. Our visitors were very impressed by the quality of their writing and the standard of their reading. In a couple of weeks, we are hosting another school who are coming to observe and learn from the way we teach our reading program. This school is from Monbulk, which is quite a distance away. Early next term we are hosting a school from Hastings so as you can see our reputation is growing far and wide. Congratulations to our teachers for doing such a fabulous job, all of our students are benefitting from their expertise. Book Week Celebrations We had a fabulous day last week with lots of fun and excitement in the 1/2 area, the children were all dressed up in their favourite book character and brought their favourite book to share. All the students from P-2 were in mixed groups for the day and rotated amongst all the classes doing all kinds of’ ‘book’ activities during the day. The children really enjoyed being with children from other classes; it was a great way to make new friends. The day was a huge success and highlighted the way our community loves reading and books.

Lost property Our stock of lost property seems to be mounting. May I remind you again to label your children’s items of clothing very clearly, so that we can return them. If your child has hand me downs please cross out the previous name and write your child’s name in. It would also be helpful if you regularly checked your children’s jumpers at home to see that they have the right name as at times jumpers are mixed up and end up in the wrong home. One of our very kind parents, Mrs Gillson is checking the lost property every couple of days to ensure that named items find their rightful owners-a huge thank you to her!! Whilst I am thanking people, I would also like to thank another of our parents Mrs King who has been braving the very cold weather on Monday mornings and changing the sign on the roundabout.

This has been very helpful and ensures our community is kept up to date with the

weekly happenings.

Have a good week Everyone,

Jan Marinakos

Explanation Writing about How an Oil Spill Affects Sea birds

BY 3/4H

Oil Spill Have you ever wondered what an oil spill has done to the ocean and the poor animals? This horrifying oil has put these animals in danger. Usually birds overlap their feathers which makes them warm and helps them float on the water. The water doesn’t get in their feathers. When the feathers haven’t got oil all over them their feathers are soft which keeps them warm. When an oil spill occurs all the animals turn to a really yucky colour and they get really sick. If they drink it they could die. If the mother has a baby in its tummy when the baby is born it will be sick and oily. Don’t leave these poor animals in danger and help these animals so they don’t die. By Lara Oil Spill Have you ever wondered what happens to sea birds when an oil spill enters the sea? Seabirds swoop into the oil filled ocean. Usually birds wings overlap each other like roof tiles, which keeps them warm and waterproof. When an oil spill occurs animals are in great danger especially sea birds. Their wings get oil all over them so they can’t fly. Their wings will get clumped and they will get so heavy and sink and die. Don’t let these birds lose their life to horrid black oil. By Juliet

Oil Spill Can you imagine what sea birds feel when they have oil on them? They are exposed and cold from the oil and they could die. Birds feathers overlap like roof tiles which keeps them warm and waterproof so they do not freeze and die. When an oil spillage occurs sea birds like ducks, pelicans and a lot more are affected. Oil gets into their wings and makes their precious wings clump up because of the oil. The oil also makes them not waterproof and they can’t fly and can die from hypothermia. Go out and keep our lovely birds safe by washing them with detergent three times.

Creative Writing The Curse

Yaaaaawn! As I woke up from my cuddly, soft, green bed, the sunrise was as beautiful as a butterfly. Then suddenly I looked at the time. Aah! I’m late for work. Oh my gosh my boss is probably going to fire me. I chuck my coat on, slip my shoes on and run out the door. I look at the time again. My eyes bulge out of my head like a crazy owl. I run to my car. OH NO! Where’s my car? I’m sure I parked it here. Then I look at the sign that was near where I parked my car. What! I didn’t see that I had parked in a tow away spot. Oh no!
