Tennyson's new state of the art riverfront park, named after local tennis g

For children there's one of the best climbing apparatuses we've seen anyw

Think of a playground gone hyper on a power station and this doesnteven begin to explain the
this Ken Fletcher Park is
The playground is based around the look of a massive power station with smoke stacks and lots o
looks scarily like a power board. The climbing nets need to be seen to be believed- intricate, com
fun looking playground which we think gives it big points with kids because it is something differ
traditional forts or more modern sparce look. There are swings, seesaws and slides as well as som
perfect for hot days. There is also a back hoe which is would expect would a HUGE drawcard on
wannabe builders. A liberty swing makes this an all abilities playground. There is also a pontoon
say fishing????
Its location (built on an old power station site) speaks bundles about the opportunity to extend pla
and making the most of the power station vibe.

Built on 2.9 hectares of land, formerly the site of theTennyStation, this park has more to do with power than tennis. Tfeatures smoke stacks, safety signs, and climbing equipmeresembles a powerboard. While this brightly coloured play to older kids, there is plenty for pre-schoolers. As well as sw
and water play equipment, there's a large piece of heavy mon (I've been told it's a backhoe). The playground has beenchildren of all abilities and as such includes a liberty swing.

YOU'RE queuing patiently withyour child for a swing but the kidon it seems to be set for an age. It's all sunny in the sand pit untilsome brat decides to dish out thedirt in vour direction.Or 3 strange child looks up atyou and asks you to give them aheave ho to the top of the highestpoint of the play pit. What do you do?A trip to the playground can be aminefield in parenting politics. Inschool holidavs. when the mitesmultiply, child's play is an exercisein chaos. Here are five tips to getting outof the rough and tumble of theplayground:As tempting as it might be, don ttell off someone else's child. Ifthey are being mean, offensive, harmful, it's best to stick with ageneric "remember kids, we treatpeople ike we want them to treatus. Not as fun, but safer.Given we now all expect to workinto our mid-seventies, that snotty-
nosed screamer could grow up tobe your boss some day.2 Just like the advice you giveyour teenage daughter on herfirst date, avoid all physical contact f someone else's child asksyou to push them on a swing orgive them a boost up a tree, tellthem to ask their parent You neverknow if they are doing somethingthey are not supposed to be doing. And never lay hands on someone else's child if they are behavingbadly. Speak to their accompanying adult or, if necessary, go homeand practice voodoo. You didn'tthink Bratz dolls were for kids toplay with, did you?3 Take part, don't tune out. Ifyou have taken a few 5-yearolds to the maze of New Farm
Park's wonderful tree house, it'snot okay to bury yourself in a bookand a coffee. Not only can you make sureyour child doesn't get lost, break aleg, run off with a family ofpossums, you also get to releaseyour inner child. This rule particularly applies todads, who are mostly as mature asa 5-year-old anyway.4 Don tjust go to any park, planyour outing carefully. Chooseyour park outing based on thequality of playground equipment, the vicinity of quality take-awaycaffeine outlets and a direct routeto medical sen1ices in case the funturns into a thump.S lf you see a lost child, helpthem find their parent. Nojokes here- just put yourself in theplace of the parent and act like youwould want someone else to act. Ofcourse, if you do help the child findtheir parent who hasn't noticedthey were gone, you get bonuspoints for feelings of superiority.

Opening on Australia Day 2012, Calamvale District
Park in southern Brisbane has provided a vital green
space for a growing population and transformed the
landscape of playground design.
In 2000, the Calamvale District Local Plan indicated to
the Brisbane City Council that a park was needed to meet
the recreational needs of the rapidly expanding Calamvalepopulation. As a result, Council undertook a process of land

for the park, which were then provided to the community

Construction of the park was undertaken in stages, as funds
become available. In 2010 both the Festival Space a large
open area for community events and the off-leash dog area,
were established. These were followed by the installation of
the groundbreaking playground in 2011.
SkyWalk takes play to new heights
Calamvales remarkable playground is the result of comprehensive
consultation on the part of Council, specically with those who
would be using the equipment.
As such, design workshops were held with local students from
Algester State School and Calamvale Community College, in order togain an understanding of what kids wanted from the new playground.
The students provided Council with valuable insight and ideas
that contributed to the overall design of the playground and the
mix of equipment that was to be included.
