4. Shaving mistakesBefore shaving, try using steam or hot waterto help open pores. Also, while there'snothing wrong with keeping your facial hairunder control and maintaining a clean-shaven look, it's not a bad idea to let yourfacial hair grow occasionally. This break canhelp unclog your pores and reduce ingrownhairs.

5. Forgetting the shadesNext time you run out of the house withoutyour sunglasses, think again. One of theleading causes of wrinkles around eyes, orcrow's feet, at an early age is sun damage. Ifyou want to keep the skin around your eyeslooking younger, get used to wearing yourshades in all seasons - squinting is not agood look anyway.

While it can simply take a small lifestylechange to solve recurring skin problems, it'simportant to see a dermatologist if problemspersist. For more skincare tips and productsthat can help, visit www.dovemencare.com.

(BPT) - Most women would agree thatgetting ready for a night out on the town ismuch more exciting than getting ready for atypical day. Dressing up, adding someshine or a little extra sparkle to your outfitcan give your mood a boost whether it's fora special occasion or a regular day.

If you're concerned that dressing up yourdaily ensemble will take your look over thetop, remember that it's all about adding theright touches. Think of it as bringing addedinterest to a basic look, rather than wearingthe same items you'd wear to a party. Andif you are headed to a special event, someextra touches can make your look thatmuch more show-stopping.

"Adding a bit of glamour to any outfit servestwo purposes," says Janette Ewen, styleexpert for PANDORA Jewelry. "It gives anadded touch of refinement - and fun - toyour workday looks, but it also makes youfeel special. When you're well dressed, youfeel your best - it's really as simple as that."

To make date night, lunch with friends oreven a day at the office a little morespecial, follow Ewen's tips for adding glamtouches to your wardrobe.

* Stand out. "Opt for pieces that will set youapart from the crowd, whether it's a brightlycolored article of clothing, a striking pair ofshoes or attention-grabbing jewelry," Ewensays. PANDORA's Winter collectionfeatures charms with pave-set stones in avariety of colors that add shine and sparkle.

* Choose an area of focus. If your blouse isboldly colored, let that be the "star" item, and make the rest of your clothes andaccessories the supporting cast. "Pickingone area to focus on keeps your look

classy, rather than overdone," adds Ewen.

* Shop for transitional pieces. When you'reat the mall or a clothing boutique, look foritems that can be worn day to night withthe help of the right accessories. Someblouses can be perfectly work-appropriatewhen topped by a blazer, and then beready for a night on the town with theaddition of jewelry or a different pair ofshoes. "I love to pop the collar on a simplewhite blouse and add long, layerednecklaces," suggests Ewen.

* Don't overdo it. "If you choose to focuson jewelry, feel free to stack sparklingbracelets against neutral clothing," saysEwen. Avoid piling on big earrings, statement necklaces, lots of rings andstacks of bracelets all together. The rightamount of sparkle will make your looksophisticated; too much is simply toomuch.

* Wear with confidence. No matter howyou choose to accessorize or highlightyour look, wear what makes you feelcomfortable and confident. Ewen pointsout that you don't need to go outside yourstyle in order to make your look moreglamorous - simply add a little shine to alook that's perfectly your own.

No matter the season, what you wear canhave an effect on how you feel. Sowhether you're planning what to wear toholiday festivities or the perfect items topack for vacation, keep these tips in mindto look and feel your best.

Easy Exercises Tipsfor Teens-Fitnessand HealthBy: zohaib

If you're a teenager, you may be confused about how toexercise to get stronger, stay healthy or, for some, theloss or weight gain. The good news is, there is no wayappropriate for the operation and there is no perfect ex-ercise you should do to be in shape. If it is true, it helpsto know how you can work so you can have fun, achieveyour goals and avoid getting hurt.ExercisingThe great thing about sport for boys is that almost all theactivities that make you move work. You should try todo heavy exercise for about an hour a day at least 3 daysa week and regular, moderate activity for the rest of theweek. Here are the different types of activities eachweek include:1. Aerobic exercise strong. These include sports suchas football, tennis, soccer, volleyball, basketball, etc. Italso includes brisk walking, running, cycling, swimmingor chasing an annoying brother. Always be sure to wearprotection to any activities you have chosen and, as al-ready mentioned, try to level of activity at least 3 times aweek.2. Strengthening muscle. This type of training helpsyou build muscle strength and endurance. This may in-volve activities that are not organized as the use of play-ground equipment or climbing trees. It also may includea structured strength training exercises such as squats, bending or sit-ups with weights, machines, or the weightof his body. Always work with adults, coach, trainer orother expert before you start lifting weights to make sureyou know the right exercises to do and how to do itright. You can already lift weights if you play sports, butif not, you can add the kind of activity 2 or 3 days aweek, with at least one rest day in between. Learn moreabout strength training for young children.3. Regular activities. In addition to participating in asport or other activities such as walking or cycling, youshould also include regular activities in your day, whichmeans limiting the time you're sitting at a computer orvideo games. This may include active games (like Wiior Dance Dance Revolution), a walk, fight with yourfriends, or throwing a ball in the yard. This is somethingyou can do every day, especially on days you do notharder, the more structured training.

Prevention of operation* High lift. This type of training involves lifting anexplosion, often focus on how much you can lift atone time. Type of training is not recommended forchildren because it is difficult to use good form andbody can be stressed too abruptly, causing injury.* Exercising too. Exercising too much can also leadto injuries, overtraining, and, for girls, changes in themenstrual cycle, which can lead to bone loss. Some-times it's hard to know how much is too much, so ev-eryone can tolerate different amounts of exercise. However, the exercise several times a day or a fewhours might be too much to anyone. Following theguidelines and exercising about an hour a day is agood starting point.* Expect realistic results. While it is good to havegoals to improve your body, you can not always con-trol what we can change. If you want bigger muscles,it is something that happens after puberty, althoughyou can always build strength at any age. If you wantto lose weight, exercise and healthy diet is the key,but do not expect a dramatic weight loss last night.Permanent, safe weight loss is a slow process and tryto accelerate with a healthy diet or exercising oftencounterproductive.Tips for getting more exerciseIf you are into sports, you may have practices, gamesand other activities to keep you busy. Otherwise, youmay need to be creative in this sport, especially if youhave not yet had the opportunity to practice differentactivities to find what you like and what you aregood. Some ideas:* On foot, by bike or skate to and from school, if theoption* Ask your parents if you can go to the gym withthem or if there is a local community center whereyou can exercise* Check the network cable to see if you have ExerciseTV, a channel offering free training whenever youwant* If you hang out at the mall or local shopping center, take a walk rather than staying in one place or not eatat the food court* Create a new routine where you walk, run or inlineskate every day, when you come home from school orbefore dinner. If you do not want to exercise outsideof them, ask your friend or family member to go withyou or use a video workout in your bedroom* Do some task. rake leaves or sweep the street canactually burn calories by making your parents happy* Take the dog for a walk

might seem noble, it can lead to serious muscle andjoint problems over time.Sprained ankles are the most common basketballinjuries, but jammed or broken fingers, bruises, bloodyor broken noses, and poked eyes are all too common aswell. When playing outdoors, abrasions (particularly tothe palms and fingers) are always a risk.Indoor ball presents its own hazards in the form ofwalls and bleachers, and players are bound to collidegoing after loose balls and rebounds wherever theyplay.Gear GuidelinesIf you've got two people, a ball, and a basketball hoop, you've got just about everything you need for abasketball game. But this doesn't mean you don't needto pay attention to what you wear, especially on yourfeet. Before you take the court, take steps to protect yourselfby always wearing the following:Basketball sneakers. The right shoe can go a long waytoward reducing ankle, foot, and leg injuries. For added ankle support, some players choose to playin high-top sneakers, but low-rise shoes will suffice. All basketball shoes should have a sturdy, non-skid

Safety Tips: BasketballFrom the asphalt courts of Harlem to the high schoolgyms of Indiana, basketball is a way of life for millionsof American teens. Guys want to be the next LeBron orShaq. Girls want to be the next hotshot recruit at UConnor Tennessee. But there's more to it than just fame andfortune. Everyone is playing because they love the gameof basketball. It may be fun to play and great exercise, but basketballis also a contact sport, and injuries occur frequently. Also, since basketball players play year-round, indoorsand out, many suffer from repetitive stress injuries(RSIs) like tendonitis. To help make sure you're doing everything you can tostay safe on the basketball court, follow these safetytips.

Why Is Basketball Safety Important?Nearly half a million basketball injuries are treated bydoctors and hospitals each year. Fortunately, very fewof those injuries are life threatening. Some (like brokenbones, concussions, and ligament tears) can be quiteserious, though. And while playing through the pain

and should be the right size and securely laced at alltimes while playing. Never play basketball in open-toedshoes, clogs, or heels (it sounds ridiculous, but it's beenknown to happen).Athletic support. If you're a guy, you don't have towear a protective cup unless your league requires it oryou choose to, but you'll appreciate having a goodathletic supporter when you're running down the courtor jostling under the net. Girls should consider a goodsports bra, and many players of both sexes choose towear supportive athletic shorts beneath their basketballshorts.Mouthguard. Some youth leagues may require playersto wear a mouthguard. If yours doesn't, you shouldstrongly consider wearing one anyway to guard againstbroken teeth and injuries to the mouth.Other gear. Players who wear glasses, and many whowear contacts, will want to use protective eyewear madeof shatterproof plastic. Players with prior injuries canbenefit from fitted knee, ankle, or wrist braces tosupport their joints while playing.

Where to PlaySince basketball can involve anywhere from two to 10players, it can be played in small spaces as easily asgiant arenas. Driveways, playgrounds, gyms, andbarnyards are all potential courts and present basketballplayers with an ever-changing variety of surfaces.Regardless of where you choose to play, you shouldalways inspect the court before you start and make sureit is free of debris, particularly broken glass (ouch!) andloose gravel. The court surface should also be free ofany cracks, holes, or irregularities that could lead tosprained or twisted ankles. If you're going to play outside at night, be sure the courtis well lit and in a safe area. Indoor courts should giveyou plenty of distance between the edges of the courtand any walls, bleachers, or other obstacles. Basketstands and any walls near them should be well paddedand properly secured. Store extra equipment like balls, gym bags, and other gear where they won't interferewith players going after loose balls.

Before Tip-OffAs with many sports, basketball requires running, jumping, and other athletic movements. Staying in goodshape year-round will not only make you better at theseactions, it will help reduce your risk of injury and

improve your stamina so you can play harder forlonger periods of time. Be sure to get plenty of exercisebefore the season starts, and always try to eat a healthydiet.Warm up and stretch before you start playing. Thisdoesn't mean just shooting a few hoops or dribblingwith both hands. Do some jumping jacks or run inplace for a couple of minutes, and then have a goodstretching session, paying particular attention to yourankles, wrists, calves, and hamstrings. It's a good ideato stretch after a game, too.Practice shooting, dribbling, layups, and running thecourt before you try to duplicate these maneuversduring a game. Knowing how to do what you want todo will make your movements less awkward and lessprone to injury. And naturally, know the rules and howto play safely before you compete against otherplayers.

During Game PlayOnce the ball is put in play, things will start to movequickly on the court. Know where your teammates andany opponents are at all times. This will help you avoidpotentially painful collisions.Fouling other players will not only hurt your team andpossibly land you a seat on the bench, it's also a verycommon source of injuries. Play within the rules, withno shoving, tripping, or holding, and always obey theofficials. Never deliberately or flagrantly foul anotherplayer. If you get tired during the course of a game, ask tocome out for a while to catch your breath, and be sureto stay well hydrated. Heat stroke and dehydration arelegitimate risks, particularly on sunny outdoor courts. If you feel pain in any of your joints or muscles, stopplaying right away. Don't resume playing until the paingoes away or you get clearance from a trainedphysician.

Lastly, know where the ball is at all times. This mayseem obvious, but many players get hurt by being hitwith the ball when they aren't looking. Basketballs arehard enough to easily break a nose or a finger. Finally, get out there on the court and have funworking on your skills and leading your team tovictory. With a little forethought and some commonsense and etiquette, you can keep things safe and stayinjury-free and in the game. Next thing you know, that'll be you hitting the shot at the buzzer to win theFinal Four or the NBA championship.

5 Ways to Reach (andMaintain!) a HealthyWeightDiets aren't the way to go when it comesto losing weight. That's because theycreate temporary eating patterns — and, therefore, temporary results. Most dietersgain back any lost weight when they goback to their old eating habits. So what's the best way to drop excessweight? Create a new normal!Weight loss is most likely to be successfulwhen people change their habits, replacing old, unhealthy ones with new, healthy behaviors. Here are 5 ways tomake that happen:Exercise. Regular physical activityburns calories and builds muscle — bothof which help you look and feel good andkeep weight off. Walking the family dog, cycling to school, and doing other thingsthat increase your daily level of activitycan all make a difference. If you want toburn more calories, increase the intensityof your workout and add some strengthexercises to build muscle. The moremuscle you have, the more calories youburn, even when you aren't exercising.Reduce screen time. One reasonpeople get less exercise these days isbecause of an increase in "screen time"— the amount of time spent watching TV,looking at the computer, or playing videogames. Limit recreational screen time toless than 2 hours per day. If you're withfriends at the mall, you're getting moreexercise than if you're IMing them fromyour room.Watch out for portion distortion.Portion sizes are bigger than they used tobe, and these extra calories contribute to

34

obesity. Another key factor in weight gainis that more people drink sugarybeverages, such as sodas, juice drinks, and sports drinks. So choose smallerportions (or share restaurant portions) andgo for water or low-fat milk instead of soda.Eat 5 servings of fruits andveggies a day. Fruits and veggies areabout more than just vitamins andminerals. They're also packed with fiber, which means they fill you up. And whenyou fill up on fruits and veggies, you're lesslikely to overeat when it comes to high-calorie foods like chips or cookies.Don't skip breakfast. Breakfast kick-starts your metabolism, burning caloriesfrom the get-go and giving you energy todo more during the day. People who skipbreakfast often feel so hungry that they eatmore later on. So they get more caloriesthan they would have if they ate breakfast. In fact, people who skip breakfast tend tohave higher BMIs than people who eatbreakfast.Reviewed by: Mary L. Gavin, MD
