CHANGES
Immigration
• Increase in Irish immigration, especially following the Potato Famine of 1849.
1. Predominantly urban, along the East Coast (Boston and N.Y.) 2. by 1851 250,000 Irish immigrants
• Increase in German immigration due to economic and political crisis in Europe (Revolutions of 1848)

• Nativism

Growth of Cities
• 1820 7% lived in cities; by 1860 20% lived in cities• vital part of commercial and industrial changes• increased the gap between the rich and poor clear class distinctions• poor sanitation, inadequate and crowded housing, increased diseases• free African Americans experienced decreased job opportunities and increased segregation from white society
Labor Movement
• Increased antagonism between workers and employers• Increased growth of labor movement though initial efforts failed• Only skilled artisans were part of this early labor movement
IV. Big City Machines
• Political parties developed a new way of winning working class into electoral politics career politicians became head of city machines
• Example: “Tammany Hall” appealed to voters on the local level in NYC.Had a tight organization that appealed to certain workers bygetting community services or city jobs for “loyalists”
• A conflict began to develop between the citymachine and reformers
