Upward Bound Reading Comprehension SECTION SYLLABUS Instructor: Ricardo Ortega In class I ask that you be engaged, awake, punctual and prepared (this means with a notebook, homework, pencil or pen etc.). I expect everyone to contribute in creating a safe and positive space by being respectful to your peers. If at anytime you are disruptive, you will be asked to leave, receiving no credit for that day and the Upward Bound staff will be notified. This class is designed for you to become better at understanding what you read on a daily basis, make you a better writing, and at the same time get you interested in reading more outside of the classroom. Section Grading: Attendance – 30% Participation - 20% Class Work - 20% Homework - 20% Pop Quizzes – 10% Attendance: You will receive zero points for attendance & participation in class if you are absent. If you have more than 2 unexcused absences you will receive a failing grade for the class. Participation: Participation will be graded on your own wiliness to contribute to the class discussion. Questions and comments will be required from you in order to make these class discussions palpable to your success. Part of your participation grade will require you to come to class prepared. That means you must bring your binder and SAT book, pencil or pens, and any other school supplies necessary. Behavior: Your behavior will also be taken to account for your grade. Please make sure your cell phones are off during class. You cannot use your cell phone in any way during class, if you do so your cell phone will be confiscated for the remainder of the day. Class work: During class you will be given assignments. These assignments will range from answering short essay questions to taking SAT prep questions. You will be graded on every in class assignment I pick up. In addition you will be required to keep a vocabulary journal for the duration of the year. In this journal you will be asked to write down every word you come across that you do not know and look up its definition.

Homework: At the end of class you will be given homework to do in between

Saturday Colleges. These homework assignments will vary from writing an essay to working on your vocabulary journal. These assignments will take approximately one hour every week and can easily be completed during your after school tutoring time.

Quizzes: Quizzes will be given at random intervals. Quizzes will be in either a short essay or multiple short answer questions. Quizzes will be no longer than 10 minutes long.

Plagiarism: If you are found plagiarizing you will receive an F for the day and likely an F in the course.
