Gill Mew

Many of us enjoy discovering interesting friends and neighbours and Gilland family are a talented bunch. Gill plays saxophone, piano and clarinetand performs Jazz and Swing with The Cotswold Big Band, who you mayhave heard playing at the Upton Flower Show in September. They performat many venues, including the ‘Sunset Specials’ events at Bristol Zoo.

Gill’s husband Steve plays bass guitar and sings hits from 1960’s to thepresent day in the highly successful Over the Hill band. Their seventeen-year-old daughter plays piano, dances and sings and is inundated withbookings for her Emily Jane Mew Trio. Emily sings every genre from Jazz and Blues to Pop and demonstrated her talent at thevillage Jubilee celebrations and the flower show. She hopes to pursue a career in musical theatre in the West End and many predictthat her dreams will be realised. She will be performing at the Kings Head for Halloween on 31 October.

Gill remembers listening to her own father’s Frank Sinatra records at their Stroud home; she was ‘brought up on the rat pack’ andso her love of music began. Her musical talent was discovered early by junior school teachers and she began piano lessons at 7years of age. Her own experience suggests that children’s potential must be spotted early and she regrets the fact that cuts inmusic education reduce opportunities for children.

A degree in Music from Leeds University followed and her first job was playing clarinet and saxophone on Cunard Mediterraneancruises. However, she quickly tired of ‘playing the same thing’ and applied to teach music at Cheltenham College. She was appointedin 1988 and still teaches there some twenty-six years later. Gill also began teaching at Pates Grammar School in 2004. She organisesconcerts and tours for both schools and recently toured Pates’ jazz band around Belgium. Cheltenham College jazz group also playat a yearly fundraising fashion show. This is one busy lady!

Gill’s love of Upton began when she used to visit a school friend, Dinah Lammiman, who lived in Perry Orchard. Serendipity sawthe Mews move there in 1993 when they found a house that ‘they just knew’ must be theirs. ‘There’s always a lot going on here’she says and they support many village events. Upton is convenient for travel and is ‘everything you could wish for’. She hopesthat developments won’t affect the calm of village life.

A special memory for Gill was when her band was the headline act at an Essex millionaire’s daughter’s wedding reception. Theyfelt out-of-place in jeans but were invited for canapés and drinks on ‘the lawn’. They spotted a little jazz band entertaining theguests and were stunned to realise that their second on the bill was Acker Bilk! It was a proud night.

So, look out for Gill, Steve or Emily playing somewhere soon – you’ll have a great time!

Keep Alert !UPTON ST LEONARDS NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH REPORT

Between 8 September and 9 October the public have been involved in contacting the Police on 24 occasions mostly passingon or seeking information about their concerns. Of the crimes reported over the period there was 1 domestic burglary, 2commercial burglaries, a theft of and theft from a car and 1 reported incidence of violence.

This just shows that even in a quiet village on the outskirts of a city there are always people moving around looking for opportunitiesto commit crime and make easy pickings. There are many ways to deter offenders who generally make their decision about“having a go” from walking or cycling past a property. Does the property look cared for, are there opportunities to breach securitywhist not being seen, are there other people about, are neighbours at home, does the property look empty, is there aNeighbourhood Watch, are there any windows open, is there an alarm, is the door likely to be locked – all these questions gothrough the offender’s mind in a quick assessment and should the fruits line up he may have a payday.

Your security will depend on the converse of the above:If your front door cannot be seen by your neighbours due to growth in the front garden, cut it back and make use of naturalsurveillance. Don’t allow easy access to the rear of your property. Join or start a Neighbourhood Watch and get the signs up,consider an alarm system. And the last two most important points –

• be it your home your car or your shed lock them and don’t have items that may tempt offenders on display – Over 30%of all burglaries occur by offenders entering insecure premises.

• Make your home look occupied even though you are out – this is especially important in the late afternoon and earlyevening now the clocks have gone back. Light timers are cheap, easy to use and reliable.

Please consider joining Neighbourhood Watch with a registered scheme and if you want more information please contact me.Crime cannot flourish in a community that cares!

In RemembranceUSL Commemorative ProjectLike the realisation of those involved in the dark times of World War One, our Project won’t be over by Xmas, but it is movingahead steadily. As many will be aware the Parish Council agreed to coordinate the various commemorative elements including abid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund ( HLF ) which is underway. This will hopefully cover the restoration of our WarMemorial ( completed during our fine summer weather - doesn’t it look better ? ), support the copying and publishing costs ofMike Stratford’s wonderful WW1 Exhibition held in August and, building on research and activities so far, enable future educationalvisits to Gloucestershire Archives by the two schools and by adult groups too.

We aim to plant a new commemorative tree on the Village Green to replace the Cedar which had to be removed recently.

Finally, a major element is the planned erection of two wooden memorial plaques on the south wall inside the church to recordthe names of the 37 men from Upton who gave their lives during the 1914-1918 conflict. They will be placed adjacent to theexisting WW2 plaque beside the Royal British Legion standard. The Church Authorities have approved the plan and once theirconsultation period is complete and the HLF bid is agreed the plaques can be made. A suitable ceremony will be held to unveilthe plaques when ready and will be announced by Rev Christine in good time.

Following on from Mike Stratford’s exhibition, if any parishioners have discovered further details they can share about life inUpton during the Great War, or about the menfolk from the village who fought, please let Mike or me know via the Parish Clerkon email : [email protected]

Roy Roberts, USL Parish Councillor

Behind the statistics of the huge numbers of men who foughtin the First World War of 1914 - 1918, there are stories ofbravery, tragedy, injury and suffering, not only of the menthemselves but also of the families left behind.

Upton St Leonards was at that time a traditional EnglishVillage and from this rural community 209 young men wentto war; most were volunteers, and many went overseas. Inthose days it was considered “your duty” to defend yourcountry and fight for freedom. Of this number, 37 did notreturn and several local families were left bereft. The WarMemorial near the village church is dedicated to the loss ofour local men. There will be many stories untold as thosewho returned were often reluctant to talk about the darkestdays of their lives.

Most people in Upton will recognise the name of “Birchall”. TheBirchalls were a wealthy family who originated from Leeds havingbuilt their fortune in the woollen trade. Aurthur Percival DearmanBirchall, the eldest son, was already a soldier at the start of thewar, in Canada. He entered the war with a Canadian battalion, losing his life in 1915 at the first German Gas attack near Ypresin Belgium. He was 38 years old. He has no known grave thoughhis name is recorded on the Menin Gate.

His battalion of which he was Lieutenant Colonel funded a bronzeplaque and donated this to the church in Upton. Edward VivianDearman Birchall, Arthur’s brother died in France on the 10th ofAugust, 1916, his 32nd birthday. He had been shot in the leg andit is told that he would not leave his position to receive medicalcare at the time. The wound became infected and he died fromhis wounds in a field hospital. … cont’d over

In Remembrance - cont’dHe is buried in Estaples Cemetery and was posthumously awarded the DSO for his brave deeds. The Village Hall in Upton St Leonards is dedicated in memory of the two brothers, and also athird brother who died whilst away at school.

The Millard family lived at Pincott Farm. They had moved to the Village from Deerhurst andin 1901 William Millard died leaving a widow Alice, seven sons and three daughters, whocompleted their education at Upton school.

At the outbreak of war Sydney Millard joined the Gloucestershire Regiment. Before the warhe had played rugby for Gloucester and had played at Twickenham. During his time in FranceSydney and his Gloucester teammates played a rugby match against a team of rugby playersfrom another division. In 1916 the news came that Sydney had been killed on the 3rd July, thethird day of the Somme offensive. He has no known grave but is recorded on the SommeMemorial to the missing at Thiepval. He is also listed on the memorial at Gloucester rugbyground along with some of his teammates.

Harold Millard also joined the Gloucestershire Regiment and in 1917 another telegram arrivedwith the sad news that he had died of his wounds on the 7th of October. He was 28. As wasEdward Birchall, Harold was buried in the Estaples Military Cemetery in France.

Four other sons of Alice Millard joined up; Leonard and George joined the Gloucester Hussars,Edward joined the Royal Field Artillery, and Henry is also listed as serving during the war. Totheir mother’s relief they returned home safely, although we will never fully know the effectof the war on those who lived to tell the tale.

The Ridler family who lived on Upton Hill sadly lost two sons; William in 1916 aged 22, andHenry, who died in 1918 at the age of 20, less than one month before the end of the war.Upton St Leonards was no different from many villages and towns throughout the country.Families were left bereft, scarred and struggling to come to terms with their new conditions. This was a war that was to end all wars and yet in just over 20 years the country was at waragain!

Celebrating Our Innovative Nature - Festomane

Can you name three everyday items invented and made in Stroud District? The lawnmower? Green baize cloth for snooker tables? But what about the inflammable material that was used in thefuselage of Concorde and in the suit worn by Niki Lauda, helping to save his life when he crashed during a race? Orhow about the adjustable spanner, the lightning conductor, a material that is used in open heart surgery, or the world’sfirst 3D printed bicycle?

Stroud District’s long and distinguished track record in manufacturing and engineering goes unnoticed amongst manyresidents, yet nearly 24% of people living here work in this sector in some way. The creativity and innovation thatmakes this area one of the industrial powerhouses of the UK is celebrated during Festomane, 24 – 29 November2014. It’s a week-long festival of events highlighting achievements past and present, which was started by NeilCarmichael MP, and Neil and his staff still provide the coordinating role for organising the festival.

On Monday the 24, the ‘Creation and Innovation Revealed’ Exhibition at Stratford Park Leisure Centre gives you thechance to meet some of the innovative companies based in the district, and learn more about what they do. At theMuseum in the Park on Wednesday, the 26, the spotlight falls on our history: alongside displays compiled by localhistory societies will be a special preview of the Redler’s Collection, prior to a major exhibition next year. A special talkin the evening discusses the history of Dursley’s Mawdsley Mill, and how past industry is still with us today. A specialmorning seminar on Thursday 27 provides support and guidance to small and medium sized businesses to help themdevelop and expand. Entry to all these events is free.

The week rounds off on Saturday 29 with the Girl Power! workshop aimed at girls considering their future careers.Talks by successful women working in this sector, demonstrations and a Q&A session provide an insight into thepotentially well-paid and rewarding careers on offer in manufacturing and engineering.

For more information about the whole week’s events, visit www.festomane.co.uk or ring 01453 751572.

CHURCH NEWS for the Parish Church, Upton St LeonardsThe Priest-in-Charge, Rev Christine Birkett writes …

Dear Friends ……“Remember, remember the fifth of November.… “Well, November is quite a month for remembering. It is a month that emphasises how importantremembering is in our Christian tradition; how remembering has formed our worship today, and how itstrengthens our plans for the future.

We begin the month remembering All Saints’ Day. This is a day to remember the great heroes of theChristian faith, whose lives drew others to Christ; from the famous saints of the New Testament rightthrough to the present day. We remember that we too are called to be saints, here and now, to shine aslights in the world, and by our lives, draw others to Christ.

Celebrating All  Saints’  Day began in the fourth century, so we are following a great Christian tradition. Next comes theremembering of All Souls’ Day, 2nd November. It is sometimes known as the ‘Commemoration of the Faithful Departed’. This isthe day when we remember that “in Christ all the faithful, both living and departed, are bound together in a communion ofprayer”. We pray with thanksgiving for those who have gone before us in faith, and ask that we may be strengthened by theirexamples.

On the 6 November we remember our patron Saint Leonard of Noblac.

November 11th sees the great Act of Remembrance: remembering those who have given their lives in the service of others inthe two world wars and other wars. A day to remember with gratitude, and to pray for peace and justice in the world. On Sunday9th we remember this event both in church, and also at 11am at the Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial outside.

But alongside all these special days of remembering, week by week, we celebrate another act of remembrance together: the HolyCommunion.

“This is my body, this is my blood, do this in remembrance of me”, said Jesus to his disciples. The Holy Communion is the centralact of Christian Worship, the act of remembrance that Jesus gave to his disciples to continue. The great saints that wecommemorate in November did just that, and they would exhort us to do the same: “Remember Jesus Christ, raised from thedead, that is my Gospel” (2 Timothy 2:8).

But such Acts of Remembrance cannot be just for their own sakes: we remember so that we can be strengthened, learn and moveout in mission. We remember those great Christian saints who have gone before us, so that we can be inspired by their examplesin our lives today. We remember those who gave their lives in war, so that we can learn from the past and strive for peace andjustice in the world today. We remember and receive Jesus’ gift of his body and blood each week, so that we can be strengthenedto go out and do His will. “Remember, remember”, and in the spirit of remembrance let us give thanks for the past, value thepresent, and move forward together in mission.

With every blessing and prayer,

Christine

The Archdeacon of Cheltenham, the Venerable Robert Springett, reflects on the First World War#

In August our Cathedral gave a whole day to reading the names from war memorials across thecounty of all those killed in the Great War. It was deeply moving, a reminder of how that waraffected almost every family and community. Its deepest power was though simply in the reading of names. Names are so precious, the wayin which we are known to each other as father, son, daughter, husband, partner, lover and ofcourse they are the way in which we are known to God, whom the psalmist says formed each one of us in our mother’s womb, who call us, who holds us as beloved. As the names of those killed in the Great War recede into the carved stone of our memorials it would be easy to forget them. Inthis centenary year let us remember them, the humanity, the vulnerability, the uniqueness of each person, and those who lovedand mourned them.In our world today where still innocent victims of every race and creed lose their lives in war and conflict, it is in this rememberingthat we discover anew our common humanity, our hope for peace and commit ourselves to a better future, for which they laiddown their lives that we may have a new heart and a new spirit.

Lest We ForgetWhen the fighting of the First World War finally ceased, many people wanted to find a way of honouring the thousands who haddied – as well as providing for those soldiers who had been left injured from the conflict.Three years after the guns went silent, in 1921, the British Legion was formed. The organisation adopted the poppy as its symbolof hope and remembrance, wearing one on their lapels as they turned their thoughts to those who had fought in the conflict. The problems facing First World War veterans when they returned to the UK continue to affect serving personnel and veteranstoday: whether living with bereavement or disability, finding employment, or coping with financial stress. The Royal British Legion, which was awarded the Royal title in 1971, continues to work to improve their lives.Today, more than 45 million poppies are distributed each year with 95 percent of people taking part in Remembrance events. Thisyear it has set a national fundraising target of £42 million towards helping men and women of the military. To find out more about the work of the Royal British Legion and how you can support it, visit www.britishlegion.org.uk/

Trees Along The Motorway

Once again this issue has raised its head. Residents of numbers 50 to 60 in Woodland Green have an issue with anumber of Leylandii trees that run along the rear of their properties. These trees, about 10 in all have become verytall and are blocking light from their homes; some are also looking in poor condition and are a little worrying.

They approached the Highways Agency ( HA ) and a meeting was arranged with their landscape maintenance agentsSkanska. The Chair of USL Parish Council, Keith Pearson, attended this meeting. It was made clear that the residentsdid not want the trees completely removed ( the preference of the HA ), just reduced in height and tidied up. TheAgent agreed to go away and apply for the funds for this work although obtaining them was not a certainty. If thefunds are made available the trees will be reduced in height to around 15-20 feet.

There are other trees behind the Leylandii so the screening of the motorway will not be greatly affected and ofcourse the trees will soon grow again, which in time will cause a similar problem.

MEMORIAL SEAT

Some memorial plaques have now been placed on the “Memorial Seat” on theVillage Green. The photo is of Mrs Pat Innes sitting alongside the plaque for herson-in-law, Mike Ponting, late husband of Sally.

For anyone wishing to commemorate a lost one there are still some spaces leftand you should contact Roy Balgobin. The cost for a plaque is £80.

BMI Autumn Quiz

With 15 teams at the recent “Autumn Quiz” at the BMIit was a fun evening with an amount of £136 added tothe current year’s nominated charity which is“Research into Alzheimers”. The next quiz will be onSaturday 10 January 2015. Teams consist of just 4players each, with the cost being £5 per team.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

The Macmillan coffee morning at the BMI on Friday 26September was again a huge success. With a vast array of“enticing” cakes on offer, they were hard to resist.

A total of £334.30 was raised on the day which includeda raffle and apart from the occasion being for such aworthy cause, it was also a nice way of getting togetherwith friends.

We alsoencourage our members to participate in activities organisedby Gloucester District and Gloucestershire County, as well asworking on as many of the 70+ Activity Badges we can offerand ultimately, the Chief Scout’s Gold Award - the highestaward a Scout can achieve whilst in the Troop.

As part of the UK’s biggest mixed youth organisation, wechange lives by offering our young people fun and challengingactivities, unique experiences, everyday adventure and thechance to help others so that we can make a positive impactin our community.

Village Groups

Upton St Leonards Badminton Club - every Tuesday, 8.30pm, Village HallWe are a non-league club, so there are no pressures to play at the highest level to maintain your place in the team in order toget a game. We have a mix of ages and abilities and the emphasis is on including everyone with games being arranged to giveeveryone a chance of success on the evening. Yes, it’s the taking part that is important, but we all want to win sometimes! Oncea year we do add a competitive element with a club tournament. It’s not compulsory but most enjoy the chance to play for thetrophies awarded at the end of the evening.

Our club is very much a social one and away from the badminton court, we try to organise one or two social events or trips eachyear and range from BBQs to Skittles evenings and before Xmas some members are going GoKarting !!. Our visit to see the AllEngland Badminton competition in early March at Birmingham has become an annual fixture.

If this has whet your appetite to pick up a racket and give it a go, have a look at our website www.uslbadminton.co.uk for moreinformation, or call Tony Sharpe , or come along on a Tuesday evening. First evening is free to new members and then it is £2 aweek when you play. All you need is a racket, we provide the rest, and if you want to give it a try for a week or two, you canusually manage to borrow a racket as well.

UPTON ST LEONARDS WI

Upton St Leonards WI meets on the first Monday of every month at 7.30 p.m. The evening starts with WI news – events that aretaking place within the next few weeks and reports on those that have happened recently. We then have a speaker with talks ona wide variety of subjects. After the speaker has finished it is social time when members have a cup of tea or coffee, buy from thebring and buy table, sign up to the various activities available and chat to friends. At the end of the evening the raffle is drawn.Visitors are very welcome to join us at our next meeting. We would love to meet you. Our AGM is in November and our speakerwill be Lizzie Ellis from the Donkey Sanctuary, while in December entertainment will be provided by The Wide Valley Singers.

Scouting helps children and young adults reach their fullpotential. Scouts develop skills including teamwork, timemanagement, leadership, initiative, planning, communication, self motivation, cultural awareness and commitment. This ispossible thanks to our adult volunteers, who support Scouts ina wide range of roles from working directly with young people,to helping manage a group, to being a charity trustee. We helpvolunteers get the most out of their experiences at scouts byproviding opportunities for adventure, training, fun andfriendship.

Our award-winning training scheme for volunteers means thatadults get as much from Scouts as young people. Our approachfocuses on what you want to get out of your involvement whilstrespecting how much time you can offer. Over 90% of Scoutvolunteers say their skills and experiences have been useful intheir work and personal life.

As I write this article, the sunny Indian summer has endedabruptly and so I thought it would be helpful to look at schemesavailable to help us stay warmer this winter.

The Council backed Warm and Well advice line has been helpingpeople tackle their energy bills and make their homes morecomfortable for over 10 years. Since 2001, they’ve given adviceand provided grants to thousands of local households helpingthem to stay warm and well.

In certain areas of Gloucestershire, if you’re on specific benefitsor over the age of 60, you may even be able to receive financialsupport for installing loft and cavity wall insulation. Even ifyou’re not eligible for a grant, you can still get advice.

If you’re worried that your home is particularly inefficient andwastes a lot of energy, they have local qualified assessors whocan carry out a Green Deal Assessment on your home as a wayof giving your home a health check to ensure it is doing all itshould and is fit for purpose. You may need one of theseassessments if you are looking to access funding.

Recently my colleagues and I helped out at a “pop up” dementiashop in Stroud which ran for 2 days. It had been organisedthrough “Fair Shares” and anyone could come in and get adviceand information regarding memory loss and dementia. It wasa great success and I hope that we can do more of these typesof events Fair Shares is a brilliant scheme whereby you canaccess a “time bank”. Time banking is a system of two wayvolunteering; for every hour of your time you put in, you earnan hour of help in return.

They have been organising wheelchair friendly / dementiafriendly walks at Stratford Park in Stroud. Trained walk leaderswill help those who need assistance but if you need a carer, they should come too. November’s dates are Friday’s 7 and21, meeting at 10.30 outside the Museum in the park for teaand coffee for an 11 a.m. set off and if the weather is bad, therewill be an inside activity.

The Alzheimer’s Society has a lot going on too which mightinterest some of you. There is an art group held in Gloucesteron Tuesdays 10.30-12.30,Nov 4 and 18 and Dec 2ⁿ, 16 and30. The Gloucester Directions Group is for those with lovedones in care and they meet on a Monday, 11.30 onwards onNov 3 and Dec 1 with an optional lunch to follow. Finally,“Good 2 Go” is a support group for working age adults withdementia, their family and carers. They will be meeting Nov26 , 11.30 onwards with an optional lunch to follow.

Carers Gloucestershire are running their “Positive Caringprogramme” for 6 weeks on a Tuesday morning fromNovember 11 through to December 12. Help can be givento get replacement care and transport if necessary.

News from your Village Agent Lou Kemp

Cud Hill CommonUpton is lucky to own a piece of unimproved limestone grassland at Cud Hill Common. This is commonland and used to be grazed by sheep. It is now grazed by a few cows over the winter. In the spring andsummer, the grassland is allowed to grow and flower. This year there was a splendid show of wildgrassland flowers, starting with cowslips, and followed by five species of orchid and then two speciesof knapweed and two of scabious. The flowers encourage a large number of different butterflies. Latein summer and early autumn there was a small patch of autumn gentian flowers - easily overlookedbut a scarce flower worth preserving. (Editor - the picture on the right hardly does this beautiful flower justice; thepurple petals and green leaves and grass are nearly indistinguishable from each other in grey-scale)

The views from the top are splendid on a good day - over to the Malverns, around the beechwood-covered escarpment, down towards the Severn Bridge and over to May Hill. It's well worth a visit.

Several volunteers from the village pick up litter, control the spread of brambles and ragwort, andmaintain the footpaths. They have also repaired the traditional Cotswold stone wall along SevenleazeLane which forms the southern boundary of the common.

Ruth Ineson.

NEW - Talking PointWe have received a number of requests to provide a facility for Village residents to have their say in what is their Village newsletter. From this month onwards we will do our best to include anything that is received subject to editorial discretion. For example, wewill not include any political views or direct criticism of named individuals etc

The title was a suggestion from a recent submission - thank you to ELVI ( and for your positive comments ).

The two methods of submitting content or answering any questions raised is either physically through the Village Hall postboxor via our newsletter website http://usllife.co.uk/ We look forward to receiving future items.

Walking through the Perry Orchard allotments over the years has been areal pleasure – almost a walk into the past, when it was a necessity forsurvival to grow food to put on the table. Today I strolled once againthrough the plots. What a joy it was. Vegetables and fruit being coaxedgently into fruition, not so much for the anxiety to end hunger pangs, butfor the very special tastes you can only get when you pick “straight off thevine”. I have often bumped into folk along Dirty Lane with theirwheelbarrows or large bags who are going to the allotments to pick theirgreen beans, sprouts or fruit for their evening meal. How satisfying andenjoyable that social occasion must be. I have never seen the Perry Orchardallotments looking so bursting with health and love and care. Exquisiteflowers bind to the edges of the allotments, giving God’s creatures theirnectar. When it comes to winners at the September Flower Show, toeveryone with an allotment, you are all winners. You would be quite rightif you sensed a feeling of, dare I say, envy, running through these words;my attempts to grow anything are dismal, so I’m off to Morrisons to buy atin of peas!Anonymous

Editor’s note: We would not normally accept anonymous material but we couldn’t resistincluding this one. Maybe the correspondent will identify him/herself to us and start a regularcolumn of material like this?

I am curious about the old sundial in theChurchyard near the main gate.

Can anyone in the village decipher theinscription for me please? Also informationon its history would be of interest.
