To promote, develop and facilitate creative endeavors, research and development at the University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez (UPRM) that foster the technological, economic and social wellbeing of Puerto Rico, in collaboration with government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the private sector.
VISIONTo become the entity responsible for establishing world recognition of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez as Puerto Rico’s leading institution for research and creative endeavors, and the greatest contributor to the socioeconomic development of Puerto Rico.

New Research Incentives
• Puerto Rico: New Tax incentive for RO1-type Researchers in Puerto Rico (2008): “Ley de Incentivo Contributivo a Investigadores Científicos”.
– This law pretends to retain and attract highly competitive researchers to Puerto Rico to advance the scientific and economic development of the island. Researchers or scientists who receive a competitive research grant (RO1 or similar), may have their salary and compensation exempt from taxes. [Eligibility requirements]
• UPRM: BioSEI 2009-2010: Bio Science and Engineering Initiative–to promote research in the areas of:
• Biotechnology (including Agricultural Biotech)
• Bioengineering
• Bioinformatics
