November News The board is hearing that the members still have questions about the Board of Directors Code of Conduct which was adopted in January. This document, signed by every board member and the 4 board appointees lays out an agreement that the board members act as role models, as mentors, and ambassador's to the sport of distance riding. We are to be ethical and business-like. Our board members are held to a higher standard of behavior. Most notable in the code is to communicate with our members, seek their opinions, and make informed decisions. We are to represent their ideas and concerns. We are to be knowledgeable about state and national issues. We are to treat other board members with respect, courtesy and integrity. We are to maintain confidentiality but do our work openly. As stated in the September newsletter, "Member confidentiality is important for many reasons both ethically and legally. An underlying element of the board’s need for confidentiality is that it helps to build and develop trust. It can allow for the free flow of information between members and the board and it acknowledges that a member’s personal life and personal information belong to them. Only pertinent information in regards to the affairs of UMECRA need to be discussed in the interest of making informed and ethical decisions." Yes, some Board discussions and decisions must be handled close to the vest. For example working out a confrontation between two parties or a financial issue with a member, On all items the board needs and wants your insights, comments, questions and concerns in order to share them and help make informed decisions. The board considers this input, but we still make decisions based on many factors including but not limited to the general welfare of the organization and horse welfare. College Enrolled Students
Applications are now being accepted through Monday, November 16, 2015 for scholarships for post high school educational opportunities. Applicants must have at least two years' membership in the Upper Midwest Endurance and Competitive Trail Association. The applicants must have participated in at least 25 rides sponsored by UMECRA and intend to study for at least a two year program. Former Wisconsin members Ray and Audrey Gehrig established this scholarship in 1996. Additional tax deductible contributions are welcome for anyone at any time. Many UMECRA members have made charitable contributions to support this scholarship fund in the past. We encourage members to continue to add memorial gifts and honorariums to the fund to support this worthy scholarship for youth and others returning to school. 2016-2017 Rider Reps Candidates Sought
2016-17 Rider Reps Candidates – Nomination deadline EXTENDED! Are you interested in being a Rider Rep in UMECRA? Rider representatives are the rider's voice on the UMECRA Board of Directors. As rider rep you are a crucial voice in the decisions that are made by this organization. You must be a UMECRA rider member for at least 2 years and be at least 18 years of age but not a ride manager and be able to attend at least 2 out of the three board meetings we have a year. This is a two year term which begins after the January 2016 General Meeting. Board meetings are typically in March, November and January. Nominations are due to the UMECRA secretary by November 30. SPECIAL AWARD NOMINATIONS! Nominations are being sought for an award for Ride Managers and Vets named The Dr. Beecher Shining Light Award. The form is on the UMECRA website under the Awards tab and will – like the Hall of Fame nomination be voted on at the November board meeting. Qualities we are looking for in the Dr. Beecher Shining Light Award might include: being organized, helpful and honest, a sense of fairness, knowledge of the sport, consistency, able to educate and able to delegate, the candidate should mentor others and be able to can deal with a crisis. This will be given out at the annual banquet.
