Higher Education and Educated Unemployment in Jammu and Kashmir

Abstract Education is considered as the main channel for economic development, which generates the efficient and technical human capital. If on the one hand higher education witnessed a encouraging growth rate in Jammu and Kashmir, while there is an increasing trend of educated unemployment on the other. It is evident from the facts that educated unemployment in state is more as compared to general unemployment. Highest unemployment has been found in graduates and Post graduates as compared to technical courses. In state of Jammu and Kashmir up to 2007, employment exchanges do not show the clear statistics of educated unemployment The paper is based on secondary sources of data and various econometric tools have been used to emphasized the results of educated unemployment in the state.

Higher education in state
Education in fact is the main spring of economic development and social change. It creates the motivation for progress and brings revolution in the ideas necessary for the progress of the economy. In the field of education, higher education has acquired more importance. Higher education in J&K state has witnessed a phenomenal growth rate from last few years. As is evident from the fact, that 14 new degree colleges have been established in the state. Thus the strength of government degree colleges in the state has reached to 54, which includes two Education Training colleges. In the state, with the setting of three more universities, the number of universities has risen to eight. The universities provide education to wide range of students of both graduate and post graduation level. Besides mini-university campuses which are set up by the government attached to University of Kashmir and
