Celebrations were in full swing at Beales hotel in Hatfield at theend of September as the AMUSF marked its 70th anniversarywith a grand birthday bash. To mark this very special occasion,we’ve devoted the centre spread in this issue to photos fromthe event (see pages 14 and 15).

It’s a credit to the association, and the many people whohave been involved in running it over the years, that it hasendured and survived for so long. There have undoubtedlybeen rocky moments along the way and – like many other UKtrade associations – lean times as well as more heady days.

But it is particularly admirable that an associationrepresenting one of our more vulnerable crafts is still around –and that interest in it remains high, based on continued highstudent numbers.

As those who attended the AGM heard (see page 13 for afull report), the past 12 months have seen the AMUSFcontinue to build and strengthen its position. Peter Hubbard, finance director, presented a pleasingly healthy set of accounts.

Of more concern is the uncertainty surrounding Brexit andthe future of the migrant workforce which so many businesseshave come to rely upon to supplement home grown talent. AsAMUSF chairman Martin Pickard pointed out, along withnearly every other craft in the UK, there is concern in the longterm about the availability of skilled people.

The future of the traditional upholstery sector, in particular, has long been a worry for many. Despite increasing numbers ofpeople signing up for AMUSF accredited training courses andmore centres opening (see page 22), we still desperately need agovernment backed upholstery apprenticeship scheme.

And although the AMUSF is working closely with TheEmployer Trailblazer Group, led by Senator International, on aLevel 3 qualification, which includes traditional upholstery, getting government approval is a long and lengthy process.

Despite it all, the industry does have its ‘rising stars’ andexciting new initiatives – as a quick look at our news pages (6and 7) shows: from Hannah Stanton and Jude Dennis whogave a post-AGM presentation on their collective, SecondSitters which aims to champion and promote the craft ofupholstery; to ‘Take A Seat’, a new, online market place, created by London Met student Elena Ferreras, where studentsand career changers can sell their reupholstered pieces; toCharlotte Lloyd of the Upholstery Skills Centre who tookdouble honours at the Young Furniture Makers 2017 Awards.

It’s stories like these which inspire and give us hope for thefuture – as the legendary Doris Fisher (association secretary fornearly 40 years and guest of honour at the 70th celebrations)and 10 past and present AMUSF presidents who were amongthe guests attending would have noted with pride.

May you all enjoy your own celebrations over the comingfestive season – and a prosperous New Year to you all!

AMUSF news roundup

Joan MiltonThe funeral of one of theAMUSF’s greatest champions –Joan Milton – took place onNovember 17 at WrexhamCrematorium.Joan, who passed away on

Friday October 27, spent manyyears as an AMUSF board director. Her involvement as financedirector was particularly critical tothe association’s survival after adifficult financial period duringwhich the AMUSF vacated itsoffices in Cardiff and moved to aone-roomed office in HighWycombe. Along with thenpresident Des Fanning, Joan spentconsiderable amounts of her owntime ensuring the organisationremained financially viable. In addition to this Joan ran her

own business, J A MiltonUpholstery Supplies and AMUSFaccredited training courses inupholstery. Said association manager

Richard Ranklin: “As well as beinga huge loss to the association, Iwill miss Joan personally as sheprovided enormous friendshipand guidance when I first joinedthe AMUSF as manager. Hercontribution to the AMUSFcannot be overestimated.”Despite battling the last stages

of a long fight against cancer,Joan attended the AMUSF’srecent 70th birthdaycelebrations. She leaves ahusband, David, and daughter Jo.A full tribute piece will be

carried in the next issue of U&SF.

PAST, PRESIDENT AND FUTURE:70 YEARS OF THE AMUSFBeales Hotel in Hatfield became the ‘Who’s Who’ of craft upholstery and soft furnishingson September 29 when more than 80 industry stalwarts attended the association’scombined AGM and 70th birthday celebrations.Doris Fisher, who started with AMUSF founder Francis Vaughan in the late 1940’s and

worked as association secretary for nearly 40 years, took the starring, celebratory cake-cutting role at the official evening dinner. And 10 AMUSF presidents, along with Masterof the Upholders, Judy Tayler-Smith, md of British Furniture Makers Jackie Bazeley, pastand present board directors, members, students and other association friends wereamong the many distinguished guests attending.Guests were formally welcomed by AMUSF chairman, Martin Pickard with a response

from the Master of the Upholders who proposed the future health of the association. Inhis reply, president Malcolm Hopkins thanked all past presidents, council, directors andstaff for the roles they had played in supporting, developing and bringing the AMUSF toits present position. He looked forward to it continuing as a force within the sector andthe ongoing prosperity of all its members.Kevin Lee from the Hampshire and Dorset Branch presented the AMUSF with a picture

and history of HMS Upholder and reminded guests of the links the trade had with thetwo submarines that bore that name. Victoria Rutter presented the association with aspecially embroidered velvet cushion.Upholder of the Fellows, Michael Gilham, then awarded the Fellowship of the AMUSF

to Richard Ranklin in recognition of both his work with the AMUSF and a lifetime in thefurniture industry.Said Richard: “It was great to see so many people at both the AGM and celebratory

dinner. There was a widely held view that we should look to have other functions in asimilar vein in the future to encourage continuing fellowship and support going forward. Our thanks go to everyone who attended, travelling from all parts of the UK to be withus. Here’s to the next 70 years!”

The official AGM proceedings were followed by two presentations – from Rebecca Day (ofMerrick and Day) who gave an illustrated talk on the history of curtain making and the use ofsoft furnishings in interior design from earliest times through to modern day; and HannahStanton and Jude Dennis who run a collective called Second Sitters. Following a highlyacclaimed exhibition at the Geffrye Museum earlier in the year, they talked about the work theyhave been doing to champion and promote the craft of upholstery at museums and exhibitionsshowing that, far from being a dying trade, it is a vibrant art form with an exciting future.• For full details of the AGM see page 13. QI am making, rather thanpurchasing, a replacement

mattress for a sofa bed. Whichregulation does this need to conformto and do I have to put a label on?

AAs a domestic mattress, the productshould meet the requirements of BS

7177 (specification for resistance toignition of mattresses, mattress pads, divans and bed bases) low hazard. Themattress would be tested to BS EN 597-1(Furniture. Assessment of the ignitabilityof mattresses and upholstered bed bases.Ignition source smouldering cigarette)and BS EN 597-2 (ignition source matchflame equivalent). Fillings would betested to the relevant schedules from theFurniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety)Regulations 1988 (as amended) (FFFSR). The mattress cover does not require

testing on its own. As such it may bedifficult to source just a fabric that’scompliant with BS 7177, BS EN 597-1 orBS EN 597-2. It may also be difficult toprove the mattress is fully compliant withBS 7177, so you need to test a sample ofthe finished product once made. The mattress would require labelling if

it’s made for resale, and labelled inaccordance with BS 7177 low hazard. Itwould need to be tested and pass all therelevant parts of the standard.

QI have been asked to make somewaterproof covers for a seat that

will only be fitted on the chairoccasionally. I have not sourced anymaterials yet as I don’t know what, ifany, regulations this cover will need tomeet.

AIf the covers are made to fit just onespecific product they will be deemed

to be replacement covers, and underFFFSR would be treated as a permanentcover. They must meet Schedule 4 part Iand Schedule 5 part I. However if thefabric is 75% or more natural fibre, thereis the option of meeting just Schedule 4part I and being used over a Schedule 3interliner.If the covers will be more universal,

fitting a range of similar products bybeing adjustable then they will be classedas loose covers, so under FFFSR wouldneed to meet Schedule 5 part I.

QAre retro-fit arm caps andantimacassars subject to the

domestic regulations?

AIf the products are just fabric theydon’t need to comply with the

FFFSR. As they aren’t upholstered andonly cover a minimal part of the furniturethey are not deemed to be loose covers orthrows. Although they fall outside theFFFSR they must be safe and fit forpurpose in accordance with the GeneralProduct Safety Regulations 2005.

Held at Beales Hotel in Hatfield, the AGMsaw Franco Marinelli from LondonMetropolitan University, elected to theboard. Malcolm Hopkins was confirmed inthe role of president for a second year andRichard Ranklin was elected vice president. In his chairman’s report Martin Pickard

said the past 12 months had seen theAMUSF continue to build and strengthenits position, with notable first steps takenin marketing with a new website and anew initiative in social media.Enquiries for new membership had

slowed down recently, possibly reflectingongoing concerns about the economygenerally. Said Martin: “It is difficult toassess exactly how Brexit has and willaffect our sector. We know that some rawmaterials have seen price increases but themajority of members continue to reportfull order books. “Along with nearly every other craft in

the UK there is concern in the long termabout the availability of skilled people tosupplement home grown talent. We can

only wait and see how exit negotiationsinfluence this going forward but we knowa lot of you do currently employ non-UKlabour and have concerns for this in thefuture.“Many members are finding it difficult to

recruit, a limiting factor on their company’sgrowth. Despite the record numbers ofstudents gaining qualifications at ourapproved training centres, we continue tosuffer from the lack of investment intraining from 20-30 years ago.”Other notable projects reported on

included:• The second year of the diploma course inupholstery saw 309 certificates awardedincluding 55 diplomas. Two new trainingcentres had been approved with thepossibility of others in the pipeline; andthe association was also looking at how itmight work with charities which deliverupholstery training to see if the AMUSF‘Introduction to Upholstery’ syllabusmight be of benefit when working withdisadvantaged adults.

• Plans for a full reprint of the FrederickPalmer book, ‘Practical Upholstery’ hadbeen dropped as the capital outlay wasconsidered too risky. A digital copy isbeing considered.• The FR proposals reported on last yearwere eventually withdrawn bygovernment following widespreadconcern from all sectors of the industry. The BFC has now put forward a counterproposal, agreed by all trade associations, including the AMUSF, with governmentfeedback awaited.• The AMUSF is part of a new industryinitiative, the Furniture and InteriorsEducation Skills and Training Alliance(FIESTA). The aim is to provide a portalfor individuals and companies seeking tolocate courses and funding for thefuture.• Work has begun on a new five yearstrategic plan to guide and inform theactivities of the association. Peter Hubbard, finance director,

reported a strong financial position forboth the AMUSF and the FUSS accounts. The AMUSF maintained the same level

of turnover as the previous year – £102k– despite a small drop in membershipnumbers. Profit also remained static at£24k although cash at the bank at theyear-end increased by £10k.FUSS saw turnover increase slightly to

£49k but registered a small loss ontrading. Fabric sales slowed downtowards the end of the year but cash atthe bank remained static.Said Peter: “When the two companies’

accounts are combined, trading andprofitability remain stable but cashreserves have increased. We continue topay down the loan to the BFM but arealso confident that we continue to retainthe financial strength for the initiativesbeing worked on by the board.”

HELPFUL HINTS FROM

The UK’s largest soft furnishings forum looksat the importance of a good worktable.

Once ready to consider a dedicated workspace for soft furnishings,a worktable can really improve workflow. These are some of thetop suggestions from MyDecozo members about what they havein their workrooms:

The best height for comfortable use is to set the table top atjust above hip height. As a first project, you could raise a diningtable or some kitchen cabinets on sturdy wooden blocks to be abase, then cover a large sheet of chipboard to lay on top to be thetable surface. If necessary, this top can then be lifted off andleaned against the wall when not in use.

IKEA sell height adjustable table legs (look for OLOV orGERTON) and adjustable wooden trestles called FINNVARD whichwould all support a worktable top.

Some makers prefer working on a bare or varnished table-top(smoothed to ensure nothing snags the fabric) while others like acovering of plastic tablecloth or oilcloth stapled in place. If youchoose a wooden surface, you can draw measured guide lines or agrid on the surface with a permanent marker pen to speed upmeasuring and folding hems etc. You can also attach a measure toone edge to help with cutting lengths of fabric and lining.

If you prefer having a table you can pin into, or iron on, thenyou will want to stretch a covering over the surface. This can haveheat-resistant protective covering (like that used on dining tables)or curtain interlining stapled on first, then covered with stretchedsheeting or double-width curtain lining to make a smooth, cleansurface.

For a covered table, you can also buy sturdy canvas worktablecovers with a pre-printed metric grid which are stapled in placeand help tremendously with curtain and blind making. They allow

you to quickly and accurately measure cut drops, fold hems andensure corners are at right angles. These are available in the UKfrom AMUSF member Denton Drapes.

If you would like to extend your table, then consider usingsturdy adjustable locking brackets which allow a ‘flap’ to be foldeddown when not in use. These are available from DIY suppliers andwill bear weights of up to 200kg.

Those of you lucky enough to consider having a table built foryou might be interested in some excellent instructions availablefrom the US workroom supplier – Rowley Company. These can bedownloaded free of charge as a PDF from their website www.rowleycompany.com/content/how-to-guides.asp#workroom

AMUSF member Townsend Systems also supply heightadjustable workbenches. For more information visitwww.townsend-systems.com

Finally, if you are in a position to buy a table from a supplier tothe trade, then take a look at an electric adjustable upholsterer’stable from a specialist supplier, or a beautiful wooden bench asmade by EMIR in Kent. Advice

It’s a worrying fact that as the rate ofcompany litigations increases, any numberof different individuals or companies couldtake action against you. These mightinclude banks, creditors, current andprevious employees.

Directors of public or private limitedcompanies could face unlimited personalliability following an allegation of awrongful act in the execution of theirduties. Ultimately, your own personalassets could be at risk.

With this in mind, more and morecompanies are taking out a Directors’ andOfficers’ Insurance policy to provide coverfor defence costs for all company directors, officers and employees in the event of anywrongful allegations. Cover will also includethe company’s costs and expenses.

Claims can be made under a number of

guises: The Companies Act 2006; Healthand Safety at work; Race, sexual and agediscrimination; The Insolvency Act;Disability Discrimination Act.Examples are numerous but to offer a few:• The co-directors of a company make anegligence claim against another directorfollowing a fire at the company’s premisesafter discovering that the directorresponsible for arranging insurance hadfailed to keep the policy up to date, causinga shortfall in the claim settlement. • A former employee claimed she had beenthe victim of continuous racial harassment(discrimination) by her supervisor and thatthe company had ignored her complaints.Ultimately the employee was forced toresign and brought a claim against thecompany.• After a routine visit by the Health and

Safety Executive a company is asked toproduce its accident book. The recordswere found to be incomplete and sensitivedata had not been kept confidential. Thecompany was prosecuted under the Healthand Safety at Work Act 1975 and the DataProtection Act 1998.• A company went into liquidation shortlyafter one of its directors ran up a large billwith a vehicle repairer. The cost was incurredon behalf of the company. The vehiclerepairer brought an action for payment ofthe invoice and there was a suggestion thatthe director was liable, personally, in viewof the provisions of the Insolvency Act.

22 Upholsterer & Soft Furnisher December/January/February 2017-18

The all-new British School of UpholsteredFurniture opened its charmingly rural barndoors for business on October 1, headedup by two accredited members of theGuild of Traditional Upholsterers.

Gareth Rees and Greg Cupitt-Jones felt‘the time was right’ to open up theirNettlebed near Henley-on-Thames centre, offering a range of AMUSF accredited andstandalone courses in upholstery andassociated decorative arts such gilding, caning and passementerie.

Said Gareth Rees: “We’re based in aconverted barn and have invested a lot ofour own time and money into this. Wehave almost filled spaces for the first yearand have just a couple of places left onthe Level 3 course – we offer AMUSF Level1, 2 and 3 courses and have offered acouple of small bursaries for youngerpeople as we feel it is important to getyoung people into the craft.

“We also plan to have visiting experts –for example more and more people areinterested in doing traditional Frenchupholstery, so we’ll have an expert in thatfield working with us.”

Over at Ashbourne in Derbyshire, theCommunity College has a history ofrunning leisure courses in upholstery andhas been running City & Guilds courses inupholstery for the past five years.

WELCOMEMOMENTUM

Following changes to those courses, thecollege decided to introduce AMUSF Level1 and 2 courses for the 2017/18 academicyear, with plans to introduce a Level 3course in 2018/19, numbers permitting.

The 35 week course is held in a multi-functional room at the college but meetsall AMUSF requirements and is led byupholstery tutor Julie Coxon who hasbeen working in upholstery for more than35 years. She said: “As the only AMUSFapproved training centre betweenHertfordshire and Scotland we felt that, geographically, this was a big opportunityfor us!”

At Rycotewood (City of Oxford College)£20,000 has just been invested in thecentre’s upholstery studio and the collegeis working with the AMUSF to see if it canstart a modern upholstery course in 2018.It currently offers just short and CPDcourses in upholstery.

Said director of creative arts, Chris Hyde:“A lot is changing within the UK furnitureindustry and we need to be open andreceptive to that. Upholstery is now a bigpart of home interiors styling, and so ourrecent appointment of Rachel Stevenson− who has an award winning backgroundin fashion design as well as creativeupholstery − as our lead upholstery tutorfits well with that, as does ensuring thatour students can study in an environmentwhich mirrors the way in which the UKupholstery trade operates.”

Said Wendy Shorter, director of trainingfor the AMUSF: “While we welcome thearrival of more AMUSF accredited training

centres, these are primarily supported byprivately paying students, some of whomwill go on to open upholstery businessesof their own.

“To really secure the future of the craft, the traditional upholstery sector stilldesperately needs a government backedupholstery apprenticeship scheme. Theone the Worshipful Companyof Upholders offered under the LiveryCompanies Apprenticeship Scheme wascanned by the government after a yearwith just one apprentice – DarrenBlackwell – benefiting from it.

“ The Employer Trailblazer Group, led bySenator International and the WorshipfulCompany of Furniture Makers, has set upeight furniture related qualifications atLevel 2, with one being modernupholstery. It is now, with AMUSF inputand along with Occupational Awards Ltd(AOL), working on Level 3 qualificationswhich include traditional upholstery – thishas now been submitted to thegovernment for approval.

“Under the new apprenticeship rules, companies with a payroll of at least £3million must pay a levy to accessgovernment funded training. So bigcompanies such as Silentnight, DFS andWesley Barrell have that option as they aremore likely to only want the modernupholstery apprenticeships.

“In the meantime the AMUSF’s approvedtraining centres offer our trade approvedqualifications for those wishing to domodern and traditional upholstery andwho are unable to access any funding.”

Expert advice

Stitching takes up a considerableamount of time but is absolutelyessential to the comfort and wearing

qualities of upholstery. It is therefore vital to use the proper

method of tacking down before starting. Fig. 162 illustrates a seat tacked down

with the hair filled in and the scrim tackedto a previously gauged line ready forstitching to form the exact contour. Tostart tacking down, first gauge the heightof the seat. Measurements should betaken from the top of the stuffing, eitherto the floor line or the moulding (Fig.162from A to B, A to C, or A to the floor), theusual height from the top of the stuffingto the floor line being 18 inches. First release the temporary tack in the

centre, add any hair that may benecessary for firmness and build up thecorrect contour. Fold the scrim inwardsand temporarily tack on the raspededge of the frame. Starting from thecentre, repeat the operation towardsthe left, leaving two inches at thecorner, then continue in a similarway on the right hand side. The front ofthe chair should now appear as Fig. 162,the roll moderately firm, the threads of thescrim straight, and the tacking regular. Thetacks should not be driven home finallyuntil the exact height is obtained, as it maybe necessary to release and adjust thescrim in parts of the work that appearoverstrained. The tacking down should now be

continued on the sides (Fig.163), startingat point A. First work towards the frontand then towards the back, slightlydecreasing the height towards the back. The corners must now be treated. Any

superfluous scrim must be cut off andthe fullness that remains folded inwardsto form two pleats, one on either side ofthe corner (Fig.162). A regulator will helpto obtain a clean roll formation and partsof the work that are uneven can bemoulded or shaped by inserting the pointof the regulator (Fig.164). The regulatoris used to draw the hair towards the frontto form a firm edge prior to stitching. Thedotted lines and the arrows show thedirection in which the point of theregulator is moved to bring the hair

forward to therequired position. The manipulation

of fullness of thematerial, especiallyat corners, and thekeeping of thethreads of thescrim perfectly

straight is often a stumblingblock and there are three ways inwhich it may be dealt with: byforming it into a series of regularfrills; by pleating; and by cuttingout. At the tacking down stage ofthe work, fullness is best regulatedby the first-named method. Figs. 162 and 163 show a

serpentine front with the sides andback also shaped. It is necessary, when tacking down, to allow fullnessby slackening the scrim between thetacks at the convex parts (Fig. 162 F,and Fig. 163 B). The regulation of such fullness

requires careful manipulation, especially on large pieces of work(Figs.165 and 166). At Fig.165 B, the

threads of the scrim are on the bias, and inorder to obtain the firm roll formation andto get rid of or "clean" the fullness, it isonly necessary to tack closer than on thestraight work indicated by the arrows. AtFigs.165 A and 166 C are shown front andback scrolls. The fullness in these cases cannot be

manipulated as at Fig.165 B, because thethreads are not on the bias (see outlineindicated by arrows, Fig.166) but straight. The fullness is therefore gathered in aseries of pleats or frills by closely tacking.
