Release 2.0 Release Notes 13

Part 0130-04856-01 Rev. A Upgrading to the Windows 2000 Operating System

After you have installed the memory, you should boot your system using the Windows NT operating system to make sure the system is still working properly before you proceed.

Upgrading to the Windows 2000 Operating System

You must purchase the upgrade to the Windows 2000 operating system yourself, and install it prior to installing Avid Xpress DV Release 2.0. To provide the most stable implementation and to generate the least amount of risk, Avid highly recommends the following procedure for upgrading to Windows 2000:

1. Back up all nonrecoverable files on the system disk (normally the C partition). This would include all program files, user files, and data files that you cannot re-create.

c Although you are going to reformat only the section of the system disk that contains the Windows NT operating system, you might want to back up files from both the C partition and D partition.

2. Disconnect all external disk drives from the system.

3. Go to the Dell or IBM Web site to retrieve and store the latest Windows 2000 drivers for the video board. If needed, you should also retrieve and store the latest Windows 2000 drivers for your audio board and SCSI board.

The drivers should be stored on a floppy disk or on a partition of an internal disk drive that you are not going to reformat.

4. Check to make sure all of the applications you are running on Windows NT are capable of running on Windows 2000. If needed, purchase the upgrades for all separate applications.

14 Release 2.0 Release Notes

Setting Your Screen Resolution Part 0130-04856-01 Rev. A

5. Perform a fresh installation, not an upgrade, of Windows 2000.

During the installation, Avid suggests that you use NTSF format to format the system partition (normally the C partition) according to the instructions provided during the Windows 2000 installation.

n If you are using the original Canopus 1394 board and a multimedia controller hardware wizard appears during the booting of the Windows 2000 operating system, you should Cancel the hardware wizard.

6. Install the latest Windows 2000 drivers for the video board, audio board, and SCSI board that you retrieved earlier.

7. Reinstall all user applications and data files.

Setting Your Screen Resolution

Since you have installed a new version of the operating system, you should make sure the monitor resolution is set properly. Avid recommends using a Desktop Area of 1024 x 728 pixels and a Refresh Frequency of 75 Hz as your screen resolution when running the Avid Xpress DV application.

To change the resolution in your monitor display properties:

1. Right-click the desktop and select Properties.

The Display Properties dialog box appears.

2. Click the Settings tab.

3. Under the Screen Area, drag the slider to the proper resolution and frequency and click OK.

4. Under Colors, select True Colors (32 bit) and click OK.

5. Click the Advanced tab under the Screen Area.

6. Click the Monitor tab.

7. Choose 75 Hertz from the Frequency pop-up menu.

8. Click Apply.

9. Close the Display Properties dialog box.

n It is possible that your Avid application will run properly using a different resolution and frequency, depending upon the video board and monitor.

Cabling the Canopus 1394 Board

The analog and S-Video inputs and outputs on the Canopus 1394 board are no longer used by Avid Xpress DV Release 2.0, and no longer support sending an output signal to a Client monitor. The following sections explain how to connect cables to the Canopus 1394 board when you use the Avid Xpress DV Release 2.0 application.

Your editing equipment might be a digital camera, a digital video deck, or an analog video deck connected to a transcoder. This section explains the connections between the editing equipment and the computer in general terms. The documentation that comes with your equipment explains the locations of cable connections and how to connect the cables.

c If you have the original Canopus 1394 board installed and you connect editing equipment to this board, the Windows 2000 operating system does not generate an Add Device wizard. This allows you to connect editing equipment at any time and there is no need to read the remainder of this caution statement.

However, if during the upgrade you have installed one of the newer OHCI-compliant 1394 boards with the TI chipset (new 1394 board), an Add Hardware wizard appears when you connect editing equipment to the new 1394 board. This wizard assigns a device driver to the editing equipment connected to the new 1394 board.

The system, however, is functioning normally, as explained in the following sections:

• Sync Issue: When recording from a digital device (a camera, digital video deck, or transcoder), what you see on the desktop monitor and hear from the system speakers is not in sync with the incoming video and audio coming from the digital device.

Explanation: The incoming video and audio from the digital device must be buffered, and then fed to the desktop monitor and system speakers. Although it might look and sound out of sync from the digital device output, the video and audio is being recorded properly. For example, if you are marking IN and OUT points while previewing video, the points will be placed in the correct location for editing.

Figure 4 Avid Xpress DV System with Client Monitor

• Sync Issue: With a Client monitor attached, the audio you hear from the system speakers is not in sync with the video on the Client monitor.

Explanation: Avid Xpress DV processes the video and audio and sends it to the desktop monitor and system speakers. The desktop video and audio will always be in sync.

Part 0130-04856-01 Rev. A Assigning a Driver to Your Digital Device

However, Avid Xpress DV also provides the same video and audio in 1394 format to a digital device (camera, digital video deck, or transcoder) connected by a 1394 cable (see Figure 4).

Because the Client monitor is attached to the digital device, the delay between the time the video and audio is processed internally and sent to the digital device causes the video on the Client monitor to be out of sync with the audio from the system speakers.

If you need to use a Client monitor for video and hear synchronized audio:

- Attach a separate pair of speakers to the same digital device the Client monitor is attached to.

- Turn off or disconnect the system speakers.

Client monitor video and audio from external speakers are always in sync when they are sent to the digital device.

Assigning a Driver to Your Digital Device

c This section only applies to a user who has upgraded from Avid Xpress DV Release 1.5 and replaced the original Canopus 1394 board with one of the supported OHCI-compliant 1394 boards that use the TI chipset. If you have an original Canopus 1394 board in your system, the driver is assigned during the installation of Avid Xpress DV Release 2.0 and this section does not apply to you.

To record (input) digital data from your supported digital device, you must connect the digital device to the 1394 board (see “Connecting a 1394 Cable” on page 17). You then need to assign a driver to the digital device.

Avid provides a driver (CustomDV.sys) that you must assign to each digital device you connect to the 1394 board. This driver allows the Avid software to control the digital device connected to the 1394

Page 22: Upgrading to Avid Xpress DVresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/XPDV_UPG_RN_2_0.pdf · Follow the guidelines in the manual or on the unit itself when handling electrical equipment

board. If you connect different digital devices to the 1394 board, you need to assign the same CustomDV.sys driver to each digital device.

n You should not connect a digital device to the 1394 board until you have installed the Avid software. The Avid software installs the OHCI-compliant driver (CustomDV.sys) that you assign to each digital device you connect to the 1394 board.

The following is a general explanation of what occurs when you physically connect a digital device to the 1394 board and apply power to the digital device:

• The digital device generates a signal to the Windows 2000 operating system notifying the operating system that a digital device is now attached to the system.

• The operating system polls the digital device connected to the 1394 board to determine what type of digital device is connected.

• The operating system checks to see if that digital device has an assigned driver based on the following conditions:

- If the digital device has been previously connected to the 1394 board, you should already have assigned a driver to the digital device and nothing is done.

- If the digital device has not been previously connected to the 1394 board and does not have a driver assigned, the Windows 2000 operating system opens the Found New Hardware Wizard to assign a driver to the digital device.

System Configurations

For an updated list of supported system configurations and known issues, see the Avid Web site.

1. Go to www.avid.com.

2. Click Products.

3. Select Avid Xpress DV.

Installation and the OHCI Drivers

Avid Xpress DV does not use the default WIN2K OHCI driver, but instead uses a custom OHCI driver developed by Texas Instruments. Whenever you connect a new camera or deck (DV device) to the system via OHCI 1394, you have to link the device with Avid’s custom OHCI driver rather than the default driver. There are two scenarios for accomplishing this process:

• You have not previously connected a DV device.

• You have previously connected a DV device and used the Microsoft OCHI/1394 driver.

You can also link a DV device to a particular driver if you want to use a driver other than the custom OHCI driver.

Linking the Driver to a New DV Device

To link with the correct driver if you have not previously connected a DV device:

1. Install the Avid Xpress DV application.

2. Reboot the system.

3. Start the Avid Xpress DV application before connecting the camera or deck via the OHCI 1394 and turning it on.

At this time, Avid only supports the use of one FireWire® port at a time. You can only have a single device connected to the Avid Xpress DV system at one time. For example, if you have a camera connected to your system and want to use a video deck, you will have to disconnect your camera and then connect the video deck.

In addition, Avid has not officially qualified FireWire drives at this time.

Screen Resolution

Avid requires a minimum Desktop Area of 1024 x 768 pixels, the Color Palette must be set to True Color, and a Refresh Frequency of 75 Hertz as your screen resolution when running the Avid Xpress DV application.

n Higher screen resolutions can be used. Screen resolutions will be limited by the system graphic board and the monitor specifications.

Sentinel USB Dongle Part 0130-04856-01 Rev. A

Sentinel USB Dongle

After installing the Avid Xpress DV application, the system might not be able to locate the Sentinel USB dongle. The USB dongle is a plug-and-play device, which means that if it is attached to the computer before you install the Avid Xpress DV application, the Windows 2000 operating system will connect to the default USB driver, rather than the Sentinel driver installed with the Avid Xpress DV installer. You need to install the Sentinel USB dongle drivers again.

To install the Sentinel USB dongle driver:

1. Detach the USB dongle from the computer prior to installing the Avid Xpress DV application.

2. Install the Avid Xpress DV application.

3. After installing the Avid Xpress DV application, reboot your system, and then reattach the USB dongle to the computer.

This procedure should properly install the Sentinel Super Pro USB dongle driver.

However, if you start the Avid Xpress DV application and you receive this error message, “No dongle was found. Please connect a valid dongle to this computer to ensure proper operation,” you need to follow these additional steps to complete the driver and dongle installation.

4. Keep the dongle attached through steps 5-11 below.

5. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then select Control Panel.

6. Double-click Add/Remove Hardware.

The Add/Remove Hardware Wizard opens.

7. Click Next.

8. From the Choose a Hardware Task dialog box, click Add/Troubleshoot a device and click Next.

NTFS and Media Files

Avid recommends storing media on an NTFS file system. If you use something other than NTFS (FAT or FAT32), the system might not rebuild your media database under certain circumstances.

If you receive an error message “Unsupported Resolution Error” in NTSC or “Compression_Not_Supported” in PAL, you need to delete the msmFMID.pmr file. Locate Program Files/Avid/Avid Xpress DV/SupportingFiles/Avid_MediaFiles. Click the msmFMID.pmr file and delete it.

Part 0130-04856-01 Rev. A Cameras, Decks, and Transcoders

Camera Limitations

The following is a list of general limitations with all cameras. For a detailed and up-to-date list of limitations, check the Knowledge Center.

• The Eject button in the Record tool typically doesn’t work for most cameras.

• Your camera must support DV IN to perform a digital cut. Many PAL customers do not support this feature. See the manual that came with your camera to check if this feature is supported.

• Digital-8 cameras (including the Sony DCR-TRV310) do not recognize timecode on Video 8 tapes.

• If your camera is connected to your computer and the Avid Xpress DV application is running for a long period of time, large blocks of pixels might appear on your display monitor.

Workaround: Turn the camera off, and then turn it on again.

• DV and FireWire are not frame-accurate device-control protocols. This means that when you capture a clip, it may capture several frames early or late. The timecode numbers will still match the frames of the media (if properly calibrated). Also, when performing a digital cut, the edit might take place a few frames earlier or later.

• With a camera connected, in Frame view in the bin, some of the frames do not play when you reduce the size. There are eight possible sizes to display when using Ctrl+K and Ctrl+L; the five smallest do not play. These sizes do display properly when a camera is not connected.

Cameras, Decks, and Transcoders Part 0130-04856-01 Rev. A

Offspeed Play to Camera

Canopus only: Certain speeds cannot be played back to the camera. Playing in reverse or fast forward is not possible. If you are playing back to the camera and change the speed, playback will stop outputting to the camera while continuing to output to the consumer audio chip, until the playback stops or returns to a normal speed the camera can handle.

Canopus and Recording from a Camera

The DV Raptor board is the digital video board that inputs and outputs the digital video to and from the Avid Xpress DV system. This board is installed in your system. The Canopus software (driver and dll) is installed automatically with the Avid Xpress DV application. If you receive the message “Failed to create empty document,” the dll can’t be found. If you receive the message “Failed VPOpen,” the driver isn’t running. You should reinstall the Canopus software by reinstalling the Avid Xpress DV application.

If you are having problems recording from a camera or deck, and you think it could be the video board, there is a Canopus utility you can run to help determine if the problem is the video board.

To run Rap Navi:

1. Quit the Avid Xpress DV application.

2. Connect your camera or deck.

3. Turn the camera or deck on.

4. Click the Start button.

5. Point to Program, Avid, Utilities, and click Rap Navi.

If the Rap Navi utility starts without any error, the board is working properly.

n Consumer audio cards exhibit differences with the phasing and polarity of the audio signal. Tolerances will vary with each brand of card. These limitations are inherent to the hardware and will display in all applications that play audio through the card.

Updating Audio Drivers

When you start the Avid Xpress DV application and you receive this error message, “Can't find any audio cards in your system. You will not be able to play audio,” or you get an exception error “WIN32MIXER” when you initialize audio, you will need to update your audio driver to a more recent version.

If you have a sound card that you use for audio, go to the sound card manufacturer's Web site and look for the most recent audio driver for Windows 2000 Pro for that card.

If you are using the onboard audio chip in your computer, go to the computer manufacturer's Web site and look for the most recent audio driver for your computer model for Windows 2000 Pro.

Release 2.0 Release Notes 61

Part 0130-04856-01 Rev. A Audio

Other Audio Applications

To avoid contention over system audio resources, you should not start any other audio application while running the Avid Xpress DV application. If you want to use a CD-ROM player, use the cdplayer.exe supplied with your system.

To start the cdplayer.exe:

1. Click the Start button and then select Run.

2. Type cdplayer.

Using an Audio Mixer

When using an audio mixer with Avid Xpress DV, you should use shielded audio cables to connect the mixer to your computer. If you don’t use shielded audio cables, excessive noise might occur in the audio output during audio scrubbing.

Audio Tool Input Slider

The Input slider in the Audio tool does not have a scale on it. The unity gain point is correct only for an analog line, and not for a CD-ROM, microphone, or the IEEE 1394 standard FireWire. The slider cannot be used to completely silence audio; the hardware does not have enough range to do this. Therefore, the lowest value on the slider is not equal to minus infinity.

Suggestions for Optimum Performance Part 0130-04856-01 Rev. A

Suggestions for Optimum Performance

Windows is a multitasking operating system. However, background tasks can interrupt time-critical operations, such as recording, playing, or rendering. Make sure that background tasks are not running while you are working in the Avid Xpress DV system.

The following list contains suggestions for ensuring optimum performance when working with the Avid Xpress DV system:

• Do not leave a Windows Explorer window open. Windows Explorer will try to update file information.

• Do not leave other applications open. Some applications, such as Microsoft Office, run background processes.

• Do not leave an e-mail application open if it is set to do periodic checks for mail.

• Do not schedule automatic backups at times when your Avid Xpress DV system might be in use.

• Do not start any application that includes prescheduled or automatically scheduled activities, such as a calendar program.

• Do not keep antivirus software running in the background. Some antivirus software will try to scan media files while you are recording. This might cause underruns or other application problems with Avid Xpress DV.

• Do not use large graphics as wallpaper.

• Do not allow the Find Fast background process (find.exe) to run. The process will try to update its cache of file and folder locations. Check your Startup folder and delete the file if it is there.

• Disable screen savers.

• Do not transfer network data during critical operations.

Autosyncing Clips

When you record footage that includes both audio and video, the system automatically establishes sync when it creates clips in the bin. Autosyncing applies to audio and video clips that have been recorded separately, usually from two separate sources. Autosyncing creates a

Page 67: Upgrading to Avid Xpress DVresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/XPDV_UPG_RN_2_0.pdf · Follow the guidelines in the manual or on the unit itself when handling electrical equipment

Release 2.0 Release Notes 67

Part 0130-04856-01 Rev. A Documentation Changes for Release 2.0

new subclip that displays sync breaks in the Timeline as though the audio and video were recorded simultaneously.

Autosyncing is often used for projects in which picture and sound were captured separately. These clips are often synced based on common film timecode, sound timecode, or auxiliary timecode.

You can also autosync any audio and video clips based on a user-defined IN point or OUT point relationship that you establish with marks. For example, you can use the slate as a common visual and audio reference for autosyncing the clips.

Use the following guidelines when autosyncing:

• You can autosync audio clips with video clips.

• You can create only one autosynced subclip at a time.

• If the audio and video clips do not have matching source timecode, you must establish common sync frames. To do this, mark IN points (or OUT points) on both clips before autosyncing. When you autosync using this method, the whole clip is taken into the subclip.

• If you are autosyncing clips of different lengths, the longer clip is truncated to the length of the shorter clip; video clips override audio clips.

• If you autosync according to common timecodes that are staggered (one clip starts later than the other), the later starting timecode becomes the start of the new subclip. The clip with the earlier starting timecode is trimmed accordingly.

Sync break displayed in the Timeline

To create an autosynced subclip:

1. Highlight the two clips in the bin.

2. Choose AutoSync from the Bin Fast menu.

The Sync Selection dialog box appears.

3. Select an option, based on the following:

- Inpoints, if you are syncing according to IN points set in both clips.

- Outpoints, if you are syncing according to OUT points set in both clips.

- Source Timecode, if the two clips have matching timecode.

4. Click OK.

The subclip is created and named by default after the video clip with the file name extension .sync.n, where n is the incremental number of subclips created with the same name.

You can change the name according to preference. You can load an autosynced subclip into the Source monitor and immediately edit it into a sequence.

Recording Audio at +20 dB Gain

Line levels record very loud when the default of +20 dB Gain is used. To avoid this, select the +20 dB Gain check box in the Audio tool, above the Input slider.

Copying Locators from Source Clips

Copying locators from source clips is not a feature in Avid Xpress DV. The Avid Xpress DV User’s Guide, page 12-40, and Help incorrectly state that this is a feature.

70 Release 2.0 Release Notes

Additional Notes on Operation Part 0130-04856-01 Rev. A

Additional Notes on Operation

n For specific issues with cameras, see the Knowledge Center.

Audio

Canopus 1394: If you play in reverse or at a speed greater than 30 fps (25 fps for PAL), audio drops out of the camera. You will still hear the audio from the computer.

When using the Yamaha® SXG driver, you might experience audio hardware underruns when playing back audio.

Workaround: Quit Avid Xpress DV and set the preferred playback device to Sound Max Digital Audio.

1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then select Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Sounds and Multimedia Properties icon.

The Sounds and Multimedia Properties dialog box appears.

3. Click the Audio tab.

4. From the Sound Playback section, choose Sound Max Digital Audio from the Preferred device pop-up menu.

5. Select the “Use only preferred devices” option.

6. Click OK.

When playing a calibration tone to both the camera and the consumer audio line (DV OHCI/1394) out, the frequency of the tone heard on the consumer line will change.

Page 71: Upgrading to Avid Xpress DVresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/XPDV_UPG_RN_2_0.pdf · Follow the guidelines in the manual or on the unit itself when handling electrical equipment

Release 2.0 Release Notes 71

Part 0130-04856-01 Rev. A Additional Notes on Operation

Workaround: If calibrating the audio going to the DV OHCI/1394 line, listen to the output through the camera, rather than the consumer audio line out. Disable the output to the camera. Double-click the Video Display settings from the Project Settings window, and then click the Client monitor option to deselect it.

The first time you attempt to import audio from a CD-ROM on a system that does not have an ASPI driver, the Avid Xpress DV system changes the system registry and asks you to reboot.

Workaround: Quit from the Avid Xpress DV application and reboot your system.

You might experience excessive noise when connecting your computer headphone output to outboard audio equipment, such as a studio mixer or powered loudspeakers. This is due to the signal grounding arrangement in both the external audio hardware and in the computer, and is especially apparent on some laptop models.

Workaround: Use a ground-loop isolator, available at RadioShack (part # 270-054), between the computer headphone output and the outboard audio equipment.

Bins

When you change a Bin view, the view does not get saved when you close the bin. This is a limitation on FAT32 file systems.

Workaround: Make a change to the bin, for example, change a file name. This forces a save of the bin.

Page 72: Upgrading to Avid Xpress DVresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/XPDV_UPG_RN_2_0.pdf · Follow the guidelines in the manual or on the unit itself when handling electrical equipment

72 Release 2.0 Release Notes

Additional Notes on Operation Part 0130-04856-01 Rev. A

Digital Cut

You cannot perform an audio only digital cut longer than 10 minutes.

Workaround: Include video in the digital cut.

Inaccurate timecode occurs when using mixed frame rates (non-drop-frame and drop-frame) and DVCAM recording format.

Effects

If you change the name of a motion effect clip, export it, and then import it into another system, the clip will retain its original name. It does not retain the changed file name after import.

A long video mixdown with multiple unrendered effects might cause an insufficient memory error.

Workaround: Render the effects first, and then perform a video mixdown.

Changes to a nested effect do not update in the monitor until the top effect is rendered.

Export

Exporting complex footage as MPEG-1 files sometimes fails.

Workaround: Sonic Solutions is working on resolving this problem. In the meantime, Avid recommends that you export MPEG-1 files under 8 minutes, or export with Media Cleaner® Version 5.0 until Media Cleaner EZ Version 5.0 is available.

Release 2.0 Release Notes 73

Part 0130-04856-01 Rev. A Additional Notes on Operation

You cannot use the Exporting a QuickTime Reference Movie with the Use Network Media Reference option enabled across a network. This causes an “Unable to export bin” error.

Workaround: Use the drag and drop method to export the file to the appropriate Network folder on your desktop.

Errors might occur when exporting an MPEG-1 file with a bit rate compression set to 1:8.

Media Cleaner EZ does not support 16:9 file format. You can’t export a 16:9 file format to Media Cleaner EZ.

When you export a QuickTime DV stream file at 32 kHz, make sure you select “Audio format locked” in the QuickTime Codec Options dialog box. If you don’t, you will have audio dropouts when you play the file in the QuickTime Player.

Import

White frames display when batch importing an offline sequence that contains a consolidated QuickTime movie.

Installing

A Browser opens when you click to display the Avid Xpress DV Product Registration form. The Browser is hidden behind the Avid Xpress DV application.

Workaround: Minimize the Avid Xpress DV application to display and fill out the Avid Xpress DV Product Registration form.

Media Files

Media files deleted from the OMFI MediaFiles folder (located outside the application) do not display as “Media Offline” properly.

Workaround: Delete the media databases and rebuild them for the offline functionality to work properly:

1. Quit the Avid Xpress DV application.

2. Locate the OMFI MediaFiles folder.

3. Delete the .pmr and .mbd files.

4. Start the Avid Xpress DV application.

The media database rebuilds when you start the application.

Playback

The Dell® 330 system with an NVIDIA® display card installed plays back a flash of distorted video periodically.

Video stutter occurs on a Dell 330 system when playing back at a high speed through the camera.

Recording

Autosync with Source timecode does not work properly when recording through a transcoder. The audio and video are out of sync.

If you autosync two clips by IN point (one video clip and one audio clip), but no IN point has been set, the video and audio sync will be off by one frame.

Workaround: Go to the head of the clip and set an IN point.

The Record tool displays incorrect drive space available when the disk becomes full.

Workaround: Avid recommends that you do not completely fill your media drive to avoid any problems.

Line levels record very loud when the default of +20 dB Gain is used.

Workaround: Select the +20 dB Gain check box in the Audio tool, above the Input slider.

The emptiest drive does not always appear bold in the Record tool.
