  Good News! The money needed to put lights up at Whitley Softball Field has been completed. 

Seventy one people contributed to the project that raised over $232,000.  

  Update on turf field project. 

Weather‐related problems associated with a grass field will be solved. No more unplayable conditions 

after a hard/steady rain or unplayable conditions days later.  No 60‐minute waits for field drainage 

before a game or practice. All Catawba field teams will benefit, particularly football and men’s and 

women’s lacrosse ‐‐‐ teams that will play home games on the artificial turf. Maintenance costs such as 

mowing, irrigation, fertilizing, painting/marking the field for every home game, and handling pesticides 

associated with a grass field will be eliminated. More space for other Catawba activities such as the 

marching band, intramurals and club sports. These activities will be enhanced with the turf field 

available for up to 16 hours a day/7 days a week. This is just an example of what the turf field could look 

like year‐round.

The 2019 Catawba Alumni Golf Tournament to benefit the Catawba Golf teams will be held on 

Saturday, April 27th at 1:00 pm at The Country Club of Salisbury. For questions about this 

event, please contact Coach Sam Gealy.

    The 2019 Catawba Football Classic will be held on Friday, May 10th at The Warrior Golf Club. 

This will be the 25th anniversary of hosting this very special event to help support the Catawba 

Football team. Two shotgun starts: 8:30 am and 1:30 pm.  For questions about this event,

  Special recognition for former Catawba Baseball player Josh Jordan, now an assistant coach at 

Duke University. This past year, Coach Jordan was chosen as the ABCA American Baseball 

Coaches Association National Assistant Coach of the Year. Read More.

  

 

In this picture from 1993, we have former Catawba player and assistant coach who really 

helped to get the 1st Pitch Dinner started. We also have Chris Anderson who will be giving the 

Alumni Player remarks at the 2019 1st Pitch Dinner. We have Josh Jordan who will be receiving a 

special recognition for being chosen as the NCAA I ABCA Assistant Coach of the Year, and lastly, 

we have Dennis Love who will be the keynote speaker at the 2019 1st Pitch Dinner for Catawba 

Baseball.  

 

Former Catawba basketball player, Catawba Sports Hall of Fame member Dave Robbins 

stopped by to talk with the current Catawba basketball coaches and players during a visit to 

Salisbury.  Coach Robbins was coached at Catawba by the late Coach Sam Moir. Coach Robbins 

is in eight Hall of Fames. 

Athletic Projects & Updates

Hamric Steps Down as Catawba Volleyball Coach  1/9/2019 

SALISBURY, N.C. ‐‐ Catawba College Director of Athletics Larry Leckonby has announced that Ginger Hamric has resigned her post as Head Women's Volleyball Coach. Hamric steps down after guiding the program for 29 seasons. 

Hamric posted 536 wins during her tenure at Catawba, claiming two South Atlantic Conference Championships and three SAC Tournament titles. Catawba made four NCAA II Regional appearances and advanced to the regional final in 2008. In 2001, Catawba became the first SAC school to make a regional appearance. 

"I want to thank Coach Hamric for her dedication and service to Catawba College," said Leckonby. "Her 29 years of service at one institution is almost unprecedented in college athletics. We wish her nothing but the best in her future endeavors." 

Catawba surpassed 20 wins in 13 seasons under Hamric with three 30‐win campaigns. The best season came in 1992 when the Lady Indians went 39‐5 and set the school mark for wins in a season.  

Hamric was named SAC Coach of the Year four times during her tenure. In 2008, she was inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame. She came to Catawba in 1990 after leading Mt. Airy High School to a pair of state championships and three conference titles.

Athletic Awards ceremony at Catawba.  Four years later, the same four senior tennis players are 

pictured at their 4th Catawba Athletic Awards ceremony right before they all graduated. 

  

From Jack Mordey: I could not have been luckier with the three other freshman I have started this 

journey with. From pushing each other at our morning workouts, late nights studying, getting to 

know each other better staying in the hotels during our overnight tennis trips, spring break tennis 

trips to Tampa, Fl and Hilton Head Island, SC.,   Being with these boys has made every second more 

enjoyable. Looking forward to getting out and putting those tough hours in on and off the courts 

next semester.
