Amphora stopper = There is no evidence of paint, but the top bears a distinctive stampedimpression comprising a central uraeus (cobra) design and a circular Greek inscription around it.The inscription is too worn to be readable, but a few individual letters can be made out (N, I, p).This stamp is particulary interesting because similar uraeus stamps were found on plaster amphorastoppers in the excavations at Quseir al-Qadim (W.R. Johnson 1979; Bagnall 1979). That site, likeBerenike, was active during the first century AD, the provisional dating given to this stopper basedon associated ceramics. Although the Quseir uraeus stamps were all very similar to one anotherand to our example, they were, nevertheless, all unique and varied slightly in uraeus design andinscription.

Amphora stopper = Red paint on the extant surface.A Greek inscription in high relief. Unfortunately, most of the stamp is lost and only two letters (Γand Η) can be read with any certainty. The letters, which are in very pronounced relief, are thewhite of the plaster and stand out against a red background. This effect was probablyaccomplished by washing the surface of the stamp die with paint before pressing it into theplaster.

Amphora stopper = Most of the device impressed into the upper surface survives. It is a circularstamp with a central branch (palm?) figure flanked on each side by a letter. Amphora stopper = This stopper bears a circular, laureate stamp (diameter ca. 8 cm) that hadbeen very lightly pressed into the top of the plaster. Not only is the impression weak, but there arealso splatterings of more plaster applied to the surface of the stopper after it had already beenstamped. Whether this was done accidentally, to cover over the stamp, or in a reuse is unclear. Itmay also have been done to reestablish a seal after a notch had been cut and a cord passedthough the stopper, as conjectured above. This extra plaster further obscures an already weakstamp and only two branches running around the edge of the stamp can be discerned.

Amphora stopper = The top of the stopper is decorated with a large, red cross. The dates of thepottery found in association with this stopper, along with the ubiquity of crosses and atherChristian inscriptions and motifs on the jar stoppers of late Roman Egypt (Crum and Winlock 1936:81 and fig. 33; Bruyère 1966: 113-14, fig. 10, and pl. 28; Egloff 1977: 181-83 and pl. 20), makethe identification of this design as a Christian symbol likely. A similar design of the square crosshas been found stamped (rather than painted, as here) on Coptic jar stoppers at Kellia and Deir al-Bahari (Egloff 1977: 182 and pl. 20 no. 7; Godlewski 1986: 133 no. 60 and fig. 135).

It consists of an inner circle with, possibly, an effaced representation and an outercircular line of letters. Only two letters are clearly discernible: K and U; a third letter could be O orW. The stamp preserves traces of red paint. The underside of the stopper shows a very smooth depression across most of its surface. Thisdepression is at a slight angle relative to the top of the stopper. This is, perhaps, a trace of somekind of plug, such as a lid or bowl, which was put in the amphora neck against contamination. Thiscould have been a clay stopper or a smooth sherd. One side of the stopper preserves traces of a little sherd that had been placed between the rim of

It represents a figurespreading its arms and holding a staff in its right hand. Possibly the figure, whose gender cannotbe determined, wears a helmet and a cape. Amphora stopper = Diameter of stamp = 75,6mmThis stopper is particulary interesting because of its good state of preservation and therepresentation of an uraeus on the stamp. The first four Greek letters encircling the uraeus areERMW. The following two letters are, perhaps, Y and T. The uraeus design has a close parallelfrom Berenike 1995, BE 95 3184-Y.c (Sundelin 1996: 300-302) of the late first century AD, andthree finds from Quseir al-Qadim dating to the first century AD (Johnson 1979: 233, 234-235 d, e,f, 236, fig. 27). Of the latter, stopper d is the most interesting, because part of its inscription readsERMW. Is this part of the name of the merchant, firm or owner of the estate shipping the jars andare we dealing with the same at both Quseir al -Qadim and Berenike?
