INTRODUCTION

WelcometotheSSUgraduateprograminCulturalResourcesManagement.Thishandbookprovidesnewstudentswithanoverviewoftheprogram'scoursework,anexplanationoftheM.A.thesisprocess,adescriptionoftheAnthropologicalStudiesCenter,andtwochecklists(onefromtheprogramandonefromtheUniversity).Takentogether,thisinformationallowsstudentstotracktheirownprogressthroughtheprogram,definestherespectiveresponsibilitiesofprogramfacultyandstudents,andanswersanumberofthequestionsstudentsaskmostfrequentlyaboutprogramparticulars.ThehandbookisNOTdesignedorintendedtoreplaceindividualstudentadvising,whichismandatory,andtakesplaceinthelastmonthofeachsemesterforthefollowingsemester.PleaseconsultthemostrecentnoticesandbulletinsissuedfromtheDepartmentoffice,orcontacttheGraduateCoordinator,ifyouhaveanyfurtherquestions.

CRMREQUIREDCOURSEWORK:ABRIEFLOOKATWHATTOTAKEANDWHENTOTAKEIT

ThecourseworkrequiredforaCRMMAatSonomaStatetotals30academicunits,andisdesignedtobecompletedinfivesemesters.Thisdesignpresumesthatstudentsareenrolledfulltime,andnotworkingmorethanpart-time.Experiencewiththeprogramsofarindicatesthatworkingstudentscannotsuccessfullycarryfullgraduateloads.Consequentlyittakesthreeyearsormoreforworkingstudentstocompletetheprogramofstudy,exclusiveofthesisresearchandwrite-uptime.Ideally,courseworkproceedsinconjunctionwithstudents’developinginterestsandexpertise,sothatbythetimetheyarereadytowriteaThesisProspectus(see"TheM.A.Thesis"chapter),thecoursestheyhavetakenhavealreadyhelpedfocustheirupcomingresearchproject.Whatfollowsisabriefdescriptionofeachoftherequiredcourses,andageneraloverviewofhowthewholeprogramisintendedtoproceed.Anth500:Proseminar(4)Proseminarisdesignedtoprovidefirst-yeargraduatestudentswithintensivetraininginwritingandanalyticalskills.Eachstudentdevelopsaresearchprojectoverthecourseofthesemester,andthecourseworkculminatesinaday-longsessionoforalpresentationsbythestudents,towhichtheuniversitycommunityis

invited.AlthoughitislistedasanAnthropologycourse,graduatestudentsfromallovertheuniversityenrollinProseminar,sotheresearchtopicscanbeverywide-ranging.ProseminarisagoodopportunitytobegintofocusonaresearchareaforyourMAthesis.Itisalsoachancetoassessyourstrengthsandweaknessesintheareasofwriting,analysis,problemformulation,libraryresearch,etc.Inessence,studentsshouldfeeltheyhaveacleargraspofwhatconstitutesgraduatelevelacademicperformancebythetimetheyhavecompletedthiscourse.Studentsmustenrollinthiscourseduringtheirfirstfallsemesterintheprogram.SuccessfulcompletionofcourseprovidesdocumentationofWritingProficiencyrequiredforgraduatestudents.History472:CaliforniaHistoryI(4)“StudyofCaliforniahistoryfromtheperiodofEuropeancontactthroughtheearlyyearsofthe20thcentury.Specialattentionisgiventotheorigins,means,andconsequencesofSpanishexpansionintoAltaCalifornia,totheemergenceofMexicanCaliforniaanditsacceleratedAmericanizationaftertheTreatyofGuadalupe-Hidalgo.Theclosingweeksofthecoursewillincludeattentiontothemesthat,thoughrootedintheearlierperiod,continuetoshapepresent-dayCalifornia.Amongthosethemesarewaterpolicies,immigrations,andtheconsequencesofCalifornia’sgreatsizeanditslocationonthePacific.”ThiscourseisrequiredintheCRMprogramasacomplementtoAnth592(seebelow)formoststudents.Studentsmusttakeitintheirfirstfallsemesterintheprogram,inconjunctionwithAnth500.Anth502:Archaeology:HistoryandTheory(3)Thisseminarprovidesstudentswithabroadreviewoftheintellectualtrendsinarchaeologyandanthropologysincethe1960s,whichhaveformedthetheoreticalframeworksforCRMresearchintheUnitedStates.Itisalsodesignedtogivestudentspracticeincreatingresearchdesigns,identifyingsignificantresearchquestions,andcritiquingarchaeologicalarguments.Anth503:Seminar:CulturalResourcesManagement(3)Anth503isaseminarfocusedonthelegislativebasisforculturalresourcemanagementpoliciesandpractices.Itprovidesareviewofexistinglegislation,anoverviewofthehistoryofthislegislation,anddiscussestherelationshipbetweenfederal,state,andlocallymandatedpolicies.ThisistheseminarwherestudentsgetthemostsubstantivegroundinginthemajorpoliciesthatregulateCRMpracticetoday,includingtheSection106processandtheNationalRegisterofHistoricPlaces.Anth592:PracticumintheNationalRegisterofHistoricPlaces(2)“Thishands-oncoursewillintroducestudentstotheprocessbywhichhistoricbuildingsarerecordedandevaluatedforeligibilitytotheNRHP.Classeswillcoverbasicwood-frameconstructiontechniques,basicarchitecturaldescription,andhowtoundertakefocusedhistoricalresearchinofficialrecords.Studentswilllearntoidentifyanddescribeahistoricbuilding,documentitusingphotographs,plans,anddetaileddrawings,andreconstructitshistory.”BecauseNationalRegistertreatmentsofstandingstructuresaresubstantivelydifferentthanthosefor

maychooseaProgramEmphasis.Studentsarenotrequiredtocommittooneoftheseareasofexpertise,normighttheybeabletosatisfyallsuggestedcoursesandinternshipsbasedonirregularityofofferings.However,theycanhelptofocusstudents’programsofstudy,andenhancethesetofskillsandcompetenciesacquiredaspartoftheMAdegree.Programemphasesareasfollows:ArchaeologicalCollectionsResearch,Bioarchaeology,CaliforniaArchaeology,EducationandCurriculumDevelopment,EnvironmentalPlanningandManagement,Geoarchaeology,andHeritageStudies,CommunityOutreach,andPublicInterpretation,.Thesiscommitteechairs,orotherAnthropologyfaculty,canbehelpfulinidentifyingotherfacultyorcourseworkthatmightsupportastudent'sindividualresearchinterestsorprogramneeds,oncethoseinterestsandneedshavebeenidentified.Itisthestudent'sresponsibilitytomakesurethattheyhaveclearlyidentifiedsuchinterestsrelativelyearlyintheirprogram,andnolaterthantheendofthethirdsemesterofcoursework.Anth595:ThesisProspectus(1)Thisoneunitspecialstudiescoursepreparesthestudenttowriteathesisbydefiningatopicandanapproach.Thisintensivetutorialisnormallytakenwiththefacultymemberwhowillserveasthesiscommitteechair.StudentsmayenrollwhentheyhaveadvancedtoClassifiedstatusandarecompletingrequiredcoursework.SuccessfulcompletionpermitsfilingoftheGSO1(“AdvancementtoCandidacy”)formwiththeGraduateStudiesoffice.See“TheMA.Thesis”chapterformoreinformation.Anth599A/B:Thesis(4total)StudentsenrollinAnth599Aand599BinthesemestersfollowingfilingoftheGSO1form.Thesecoursesareusuallytakensequentially,butastudentmaytakethemconcurrentlybasedoncloseconsultationwithhis/herthesisChair.Whileenrolled,thestudentwillexecutetheresearchprogramplannedintheThesisProspectus,culminatinginacompletedthesis.ProgramStructureTheCRMProgramisstructuredasacohortprogram.Studentsenterasacohortof(typically)8to10individuals,andmatriculatethroughthecorecoursesoftheprogramtogether.WiththeexceptionofAnth500andHist472,therequiredcorecoursesareonlyofferedeveryotheryear.Sampleprogramplansbasedoneven-orodd-yearadmissionareprovidedbelow.Basedonthe2005-2010cohorts,actualtimetocompletionisusuallyfivetoeightsemesters,withthesisandwritingprovingthemostvariable.

Atthecompletionofthefirstandsecondsemestersofcoursework,andinconjunctionwithadvisingfortheirupcomingthirdsemester,eachstudentwillbeevaluatedbytheGraduateCommitteeintermsoftheirprogramperformancetodate,andtheirpotentialforcompletingtheprograminatimelyfashion.Thisevaluationisnotintendedtobepunitiveorexclusionary;ratheritreflectsagenuineconcernonthepartoftheCRMfacultythatstudentsbegivenanhonestassessmentofhowtheyarefaringintheprogrambeforetheyhaveinvestedtheconsiderabletime,effortandpersonalexpenseittakestocompletethisprograminitscurrentform.Anyareasthatneedadditionaleffortcanbeidentifiedatthistime,andstepstakentomakesurethestudentcanaddresstheseneedsbeforecompletionofhisorhercoursework.Thisevaluationisalsoanopportunityforthestudenttoexpressanyconcerns,difficulties,orunmetneedsthats/hemighthave,andrequestatimelyresponsefromthefaculty.Iftherequirementsdescribedabovehavebeenmet,thestudentwillbeadvancedfromConditionallyClassifiedtoClassifiedgraduatestatusattheendofthefirstyear.TimelineforCompletionofProgramCSUsystemregulationsstipulatethatgraduatestudentswhodonotcompletetheirprograminaperiodofsevenyearsmust‘revalidate’courseworkasitbecomesobsolete.IntheCRMprogram,thereisalimitof10units,oronethirdofthe30unitprogram,thatcanberevalidated.Ifastudenthasmorethan10unitsrequiringrevalidation,theymustreapplyforadmissiontotheprogram.StudentswhorequireadditionaltimetocompletethethesisbeyondAnth599A/BmayenrollinAnth578(“ProjectContinuation”)units,whichisusuallydoneviaExtendedEducation.However,SSUrequiresthatallstudentswhoadvancetocandidacyfortheMaster’sdegreecompleteandfiletheirthesiswithinfoursemestersoffirstenrollinginthesisunits.Therefore,youmayonlyenrollinAnth578fortwoconsecutivesemestersbeforeneedingtopetitiontheGraduateCoordinatorforanextension;thesemayonlybegrantedonacase-by-casebasisandduetoextenuatingcircumstances.Studentswhotakelongerthanfoursemesterstocompletethethesismayberequiredtoreapplyforadmissiontotheprogramandre-enrollinthesisunits.

THEM.A.THESIS:WHATYOURMOTHERNEVERTOLDYOU

ThethesisprocesscanbeconfusingandstressfulwhenstudentsandthemembersoftheirthesisCommitteehavedifferentexpectations.Sometimes,importantissuesconcerningthethesisarenotdiscussedexplicitly,leavingthestudentconfusedandtheiradvisorinthedarkabouttheirunhappiness.Thisdocumentisintendedtomakeexplicitsomeoftheelementsofthethesisprocessthatareoftentakenforgranted.Studentsshouldbearinmind,however,thatthediscussionthatfollowsisforgeneralguidance.SpecificCommitteemembersmayhaveotherideasabouttheprocessandshouldbeasked.WhatisanM.A.thesis?Thethesisisrequiredsothatthestudentcandemonstratetoagroupofexperts(theCommittee)thatsheorheiscapableofsuccessfullycompletingapieceofresearchataprofessionallevel.Beforebeginningtheirownwork,studentsshouldexamineseveralsuccessfulthesesfromourprogram,whichareavailableintheSSUlibrary.Tocreateathesis,astudentmust:• comeupwithathemethatisworthyofstudy;• formulateanappropriateresearchdesigntoguidetheinvestigation;• collect,analyze,andinterprettheappropriatedata;and• cometosomedefensibleconclusionbasedonthedata.WhatisaThesisProspectus?AnM.A.thesisisamajorpieceofresearch.Beforebeginning,itisessentialforthestudenttomapouttheproject.Thisexercise,whichisaccomplishedthroughwritingaThesisProspectus,helpsstudentsformulatetheirideas,definetheirapproach,anddetermineiftherearesufficientdataavailableforthestudy.ThethesisChairdeterminesthestructureandcontentoftheProspectusitself.SampleprospectusesmaybeobtainedfromtheGraduateCoordinator.Normally,astudentenrollsfora1unitSpecialStudiescourse(Anthropology595)withhisorherCommitteeChairwhoworkswiththemtoconstructtheProspectus.TheThesisProspectusisamandatoryprerequisiteforenrollinginThesisunits(Anth599A/B).Howlongshouldthethesisbe?Howlongwillittaketofinish?Successfultheseshaverangedfromlessthan100toseveralhundredpages.Althoughquality,notquantity,isthekey,athesisthatislessthan25,000-30,000words,orabout100pagesofdouble-spacedtext,isunlikelytobeaccepted.ReadsuccessfulCRMthesestohelpunderstandwhatisexpectedofyou.Inthefinalanalysis,asuccessfulthesisisonethatsatisfiestheCommittee.ForthisreasonitisessentialthatstudentsbeawareoftheirCommittee'sexpectations.

Asopportunitiesareavailable,studentsmayparticipate.However,wecannotpredictwhetherprojectswillturnupatthesametimethatqualifiedstudentsareavailabletoworkonthem,orwhetherthesewillbepaidorvolunteerpositions.ISASCABUSINESSORANEDUCATIONALPROGRAM?Ifwedefineabusinessasanorganizationwhosegoalistomakeaprofitforitsinvestors,thenASCisnotabusiness.However,wedooperateunderthesamebasicconstraintsasbusinesses:wemustcreatequalityproductsunderthesupervisionofqualifiedprofessionals,ontimeandonbudget.Mostofourclientsareinthebusinessworld.Theirconcernsareprice,quality,andresponsiveness.ASC'seducationalgoalsareimmaterialtothem.IncontrasttoASC,manyuniversity-basedCRMunitsuseexclusivelyprofessionalstaff,allowinglittleornostudentparticipation.Theseprogramsexistprincipallytoprovideresearchopportunitiesoffacultyandtomakemoneyfortheirinstitutions.WHYDOESASCHAVESALARIEDEMPLOYEES?ASC'sultimategoalistobenefitstudentsbytakingonresearchprojects.Todothis,wemustmaintaintheorganizationalstructuretoadministerandcarryoutprojectsastheyappear.Asaresult,ourorganizationmaintainsasalariedstaff,someofwhomareCRMgraduatestudents,whohaveprovenskillsandwhoseavailabilityismorepredictablethanthatofstudentswhoworkashourlyemployees.Similarly,sometasksrequireprofessionalqualificationsnotgenerallypossessedbystudents.Assalariedemployeesmustmaintainaminimumnumberofhoursworkedperweek,theymaybegivenpreferenceforresearchopportunitiesoverhourlystaff.
