focused on the war with AmericaBritish captured Washington, DC
and burned the White House & Capitol
Battle of New Orleans
War of 1812 - AfterTreaty of Ghent – ended warNo clear winner, no territory changed

1/4 4 Andrew Jackson & The Trail of Tears 4
Andrew JacksonRead the State of the
Union Speech given by Andrew Jackson
Annotate in the margins
Answer the questions using the speech as well as your overall impression of President Jackson now that you read the speech
Indian Removal Act of 1830
Legislation passed that required Native Americans to relocate to an area known as “Indian Territory” west of the Mississippi River.
Cherokee Sue For Land
Cherokee appeal to the Supreme Court to stop the government of Georgia for taking their land.
Supreme Court maintained that Georgia’s actions should be considered illegal and that the Cherokee can stay BUT Andrew Jackson and the state of Georgia ignore the ruling!
Reading an ImageWhat do you notice…objects,
people, expressions, color etc. In the space provided on your
note guide, interpret the tone and message of the paintings in a few sentences.
Trail of TearsBecause of the Supreme Court
ruling the Cherokee put up more resistance than other tribes and were forced out of their homes by federal troops without necessary supplies to make the journey.
16,000 Cherokee were rounded up but ¼ died on the way as they traveled the long “Trail of Tears” westward
Trail of Tears Teardrop AssignmentChoose one of the following to create inside your teardrop:◦A diary entry from the point of view of one of the Indians
◦A poem or short legend about the Trail of Tears
◦Fill your tear with artwork, an image(s) that represents the tone of this event
Example: “Legend of the Cherokee Rose”It is said that the mothers of the Cherokee
grieved so much that the chiefs prayed for a sign to lift the mother’s spirits and give them strength to care for their children. From that day forward, a beautiful new flower, a rose, grew wherever a mother’s tear fell to the ground. The rose is white for the mother’s tears. It has a gold center, for the gold taken from the Cherokee lands, and seven leaves on each stem that represent the seven Cherokee clans that made the journey. To this day, the Cherokee Rose prospers along the route of the “Trail of Tears,” and it has since become the official state flower of Georgia.
