SAFETY NET
Just-in-time Tracking of a Safe and Healthy Learning Environment
(AKA-Mistreatment Policy and Procedure)
UPHS uses a Safety Net (SN), located on the UPHS main intranet site (also can be
accessed outside UPHS via a VPN), to collect information regarding safety issues
including instances of unprofessional behavior
As of January 2017, all medical students, 24/7, anonymously can report occurrences
of mistreatment that they have either experienced themselves or have observed in
interactions with others
Report includes: behaviors outlined in *Question 39 yearly AAMC graduation questionnaire
• Specific event type: e.g., humiliated
• Discipline: e.g., surgery
• Role of person: e.g., Faculty
• Description of what occurred: e.g., called “stupid”
• Location: O.R. at Pennsylvania Hospital
• Type of person affected if other than self: also nurse called an “idiot”
All reports are sent daily to APO and to CMO of Penn Medicine and are reviewed for trends,
and decisions of next steps made expeditiously when needed
* Attachment at the end of presentation-see question 39
