A new academic year will begin soon. For me it is like the New Year ---things start fresh and an

exciting new year begins. UMRA has a great line up of speakers and many activities planned.

The Bicentennial year is more than half over and it has been interesting and exciting. The

Bicentennial staff and retirees day was fun, the exhibits educational, the food delicious and well

attended. The retiree event at the Michigan League was great fun. Judy Dean and her team, Nancy Firestone, Linda

Williams, Shirley Anderson, Sue McMahan and Susan Harris, worked very hard to have an interesting event and a great

trivia game. What a great day and afternoon.

There are still five months of activities and celebrations for the Bicentennial. Enjoy the activities!!!

The UMRA board would like to thank all those who participated in our Member Survey this spring. The information has

been very helpful in our deliberations and plans. We have started a Communications subcommittee and will use the data

from the survey to help develop a more comprehensive plan for our communication. The Travel committee is using the

data as well. Thank you!

I’m looking forward to the 2017-2018 year with all of you. Enjoy the rest of the summer.

UMRA Presentation: North Star Reach Camp

The camp is affiliated with Serious Fun Children’s Network, a non-profit community of 30 independent camps and

programs serving seriously ill children at no cost to their families. Paul Newman started this effort and the original name

was “Hole in the Wall Gang Camps.” The Paul Newman Foundation donates some proceeds from Newman Foods sales to

run North Star Reach Camp and other camps for sick kids.

The camp is just west of Hell, Michigan, on a beautiful, wooded peninsula that extends into Patterson Lake. From 1922 to

1980, it was a UM-sponsored Fresh Air Camp dedicated to giving a summer camping experience to disadvantaged kids

from the city. In 2005 after hearing that UM was considering selling the property to a developer, Armstrong created a

non-profit organization that leased the property through UM for $1/year and started constructing the camp.

Now in its second year, North Star Reach Camp is hosting more than 200 kids ages 7-15 over five weeks this summer.

Activities include archery, canoeing, swimming, arts and crafts, and playing in a treehouse built by DIY Network's 'The

Treehouse Guys' and featured on a June 2017 episode of their TV show. The camp relies on other volunteers to handle the

operations of the camp, such as food preparation, grounds maintenance, and supporting campers’ sports and activities.

North Star Reach Camp is endorsed by 12 hospitals in Michigan and by professional organizations, such as the

Hemophilia Foundation, which is how kids learn about the camp. Parents of kids with health issues are cautious of where

they send their kids, and many campers have never spent a night away from home before, other than when hospitalized.

The level of care that North Star Reach Camp can provide assures parents and campers that they are in good hands and

frees them to enjoy the camping experience.

The camp medical center is staffed by professionals from Michigan hospitals and is equipped to care for serious medical

issues including transplants, blood disorders, and cardiac problems plus the normal accidents and minor illnesses all kids

experience. However, a camp goal is keeping kids out of the medical center and enjoying the activities and social aspects

of camping that result in real growth. Kids leave camp with more autonomy; they have more confidence and find it easier

to make friends.

North Star Reach Camp will offer four family weekends this fall, giving parents and healthy siblings a chance to meet one

another and experience the fun and freedom that is North Star Reach Camp.

An Ann Arbor News article published on July 31, 2017, provides more information about North Star Reach Camp:

http://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/index.ssf/2017/07/north_star_reach_camp.html

“Living a dream is what North Star Reach Camp is for kids with serious health

issues, many of whom have been cheated out of their childhood due to illness,” said

Doug Armstrong, the camp founder, when he spoke at the May 2017 UMRA

monthly meeting. Since opening the summer of 2016, the camp is described by

Armstrong as barrier free, financially free, and physically free. The name North Star

Reach Camp comes from reaching for the stars, and kids just blossom once they see

all the possibilities at this camp.

Can I Decrease My Risk for Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia? A Review of Scientific

Evidence from HRS (Health and Retirement Study) and Around the World presented by Kenneth M. Langa

MD, Ph.D.

Dr. Langa started his presentation with some background points on dementia. There is currently no test that

identifies if a person has the disease; rather it is determined by observing how a person performs activities of daily

living. Major components of dementia are a result of Alzheimer’s disease (60-70%), stroke and other vascular

disease blood flow issues (20-30%), and other causes (10%). Of people over age 71, 15% have dementia and 22%

are almost there, with the cost of care in excess of $50,000 per year. (Continued on Page 5)

Can I Decrease My Risk for Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia? A Review of Scientific Evidence

from HRS (Health and Retirement Study) and Around the World presented by Kenneth M. Langa MD,

Ph.D. – (Continued from Page 4)

Using the HRS data in a study on the impacts of dementia across time has shown a collation with the education and

wealth of the patient. The idea of a cognitive reserve within the brain was discussed as related to education. The more

educated the mother, the greater the likelihood of the child gaining additional education. This increase in education

appears to have led to a decrease in the number of people that are inflicted with dementia in the last few years. Dr. Langa

used a story about London cab drivers who are tested periodically to ensure that they can navigate London’s streets well

enough to have taxi licenses. To prepare for this test, a cabbie must memorize the map of London, including many

changes and complexities introduced by the continued growth of the city. This study has confirmed that, as a result of

studying for the licensing test, the hippocampus region of a cabbie’s brain grows showing that the brain can continue

developing over time.

Dr. Langa said that the Health and Retirement Study has shown that, with the increased treatment of vascular disease and

continued learning or use of the brain, it is possible to fight or prevent dementia. The HRS was duplicated in the United

Kingdom (UK) with similar results. However, because education and wealth are higher in the United States, the US is

about a decade ahead of the UK in terms of the percentage of the population not getting dementia, even though risk

factors are higher in the US.

Dr. Langa closed his presentation with a listing of the things to do to prevent dementia:

- Die young - Talk (stay connected with people)

- Choose educated parents with money - Walk

- Read, read, read - Control blood pressure and cardio vascular disease

- Learn, learn, learn

Successful Aging: Lessons from the Health and Retirement Study presented by David Weir, Ph.D.

The Health and Retirement Study (Survey Research Center, I. S. R.)

Dr. David Weir, Director of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), reported that the HRS has been a leading source for

information on the health and economic circumstances of adults over the age of 50 in the United States for over 20 years.

Dr. Weir noted that of all the health problems we face as we age, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias is the

most burdensome and the situation is getting worse as the population ages. He also said the population in the rest of the

world is getting older even faster than here in the United States, US.

The disease’s economic cost in the US is estimated at over $200 billion per year with over half that cost related to the

unpaid care family members provide for patients with dementia. The World Health Organization recently declared

dementia to be a “public health priority” for all countries.

Some of the information they have derived from the data so far includes:

Good genes equal longer life but genetic research is very complicated

Wealth equals longer life

Health behaviors matters a lot

Warde Manuel Gives Athletic Department Update at April UMRA Meeting Warde Manuel was appointed Athletic Director at UM in January 2016. We were delighted to have him talk with us

about his successful first year and the programs in the athletic department. During the past year UM won five sports

championships: Cross Country won the Big 10 and finished 2nd

in the national championships, missing first by one point.

Women’s Gymnastics won a national championship; Men’s Basketball won a Big 10 championship; Women’s Swimming

won a Big 10 championship; and the Women’s Basketball team won the NIT tournament.

Many members are probably wondering what the new buildings are that are going up on South State St. Warde reported

that the largest building is a new indoor track facility, in addition to an outdoor track, plus a performance center for

training and medical needs. And, the new lacrosse stadium is also being built there.

Warde said he challenges all his athletes to compete in the classroom too. At the end of the school year, the Athletic

Department held the Academic Scholarship Banquet that honored 474 athletes who have a GPA greater or equal to 3.0,

out of the 900 athletes from the 29 teams that UM sponsors.

Following Warde’s presentation, the UMRA members had many questions for him. Here is a sample of the answers he

had to some of our questions:

He has several championship rings, but only wears them for about a week in order to concentrate on the next

championship.

94-95% of Michigan athletes go pro in some field other than athletics.

The natatorium will not be replaced anytime soon, but improvements will be made, such as redoing the locker

rooms.

Warde was a five-star level recruit in football, but neck injuries prevented him from competing in his senior year,

and from playing pro ball. He also threw the javelin on the track team.

His longest answer related to the question about how he feels about paying student athletes. He is opposed to this

because college sports are not minor league sports programs. Our athletes should be here to get an education

since 94% of them will not have a career in athletics. He related the question to himself in saying that his

Michigan education is much more valuable that being paid to play college football. He earned 3 degrees at

Michigan, a BA with emphasis in psychology, an MSW, and an MBA.

UM is one of the few schools in the country where the athletic department is fully self-supporting. 75% of their

revenue comes from football. They earn $6 million per football game. Athletic Scholarships also returns $22

million in tuition and fees and room and board to the university.

The Department has invested $650 million in improving the facilities since 2005.

Warde is thrilled to be back in Ann Arbor. He is married and has two daughters who are now attending UM.

UM Harlan Hatcher Library Tour

On May 9, 2017, several UMRA members attended a guided tour of the UM Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. A

Bicentennial Exhibit featured historical UM moments through the years. The room containing special acquisitions,

included “Audubon’s Birds of America” book, at that time, 1800’s, the book cost $9,000. That administration felt it was

very important to have a first class library. Also Robert Altman’s Oscar, was of particular interest. The tour also included

a fascinating 20-minute slide presentation of the archival process. The library is indeed one of the jewels of the UM

campus.

UMRA Hosts Bicentennial Party Judy Dean

More than 170 retirees came together on June 27 to help celebrate the university’s Bicentennial as part of the campus-

wide MStaff200 celebration. The retiree reception, held in the Michigan League, featured a UM-themed trivia game

during which 10 teams competed for points and prizes. Many other guests played along informally while taking the

opportunity to visit with friends and enjoy a cold beverage.

The retiree reception, hosted by UMRA, welcomed retirees from all three UM campuses and offered a fun stop during an

activity-packed afternoon that featured a an impressive array of exhibits; entertainment; and free food for active and

retired staff, families, and friends.

Dr. Terry McDonald, director of Bentley Historical Library, welcomed guests to the UMRA event and spoke briefly about

the evolution of the university over the past 200 hundred years. Trivia questions were developed with help from Bentley
