Local dentist BONNIE D. VILLARREAL is now helping HARLINGEN residents get a more restful night’s sleep. Dr. BONNIE D. VILLARREAL recently became an American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM) Diplomate. ABDSM is the board for the leading national organization for dentists who treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea with oral appliance therapy, an effective alternative treatment to the standard continue positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. Earning Diplomate status from the ABDSM is a unique honor that recognizes special competency in dental sleep medicine.

“Sleeping with a CPAP machine, which includes a face mask, tubing and a constantly running motor, can be difficult, and many HARLINGEN residents are unaware that an effective – and comfortable – alternative treatment is available,” said Dr. BONNIE D. VILLARREAL. “I’m committed to using my knowledge of dental sleep medicine to help treat my patient’s snoring and sleep apnea and provide HARLINGEN residents with a better night’s rest.”

While CPAP is the standard treatment for sleep apnea, the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine estimates up to 50 percent of sleep apnea patients do not comply with or tolerate CPAP. In contrast to a CPAP machine, oral appliances are a mouth guard-like device worn only during sleep to maintain an open, unobstructed airway. Patients like oral appliance therapy because it is comfortable, easy to wear, quiet, portable and easy to care for.

Dr. Bonnie De La Rosa Villarreal is a Harlingen native who has dedicated her life to dentistry and her community. She is a graduate of Harlingen High School and the University of Texas San Antonio where she has a Bachelor of Science. Her doctoral studies in dental surgery are from the Baylor College of Dentistry, a part of the Texas A&M Health Science Center, where she is currently preceptor faculty. She has continued advancement studies at the prestigious Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne, Florida and the Spear Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona.

She not only excels in highly advanced techniques and technology in dentistry, but she also realizes that serving her community is not only a duty but a passion. She has served as chairwoman of the Valley International Airport, President of the Harlingen Junior League where she was instrumental in the

founding of Kid Fit, and as chairwoman of the City of Harlingen’s Park and Recreation Board. She has served on the board for the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen and is currently on the executive board for the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce.

She is a member of the Rio Grande Valley chapter of the Seattle Study Club, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and the American Dental Association. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and often lectures to the community and other dentists on the risks of obstructive sleep apnea and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain. She truly enjoys being a mentor for our next generation of health care providers, as she sits on an advisory council for the Harlingen School of Health Professions and allows our future generations to learn from her.

She is married to Cris Villarreal CPA and they have two children, Cristian and Olivia who are the loves of their lives.
