Brisbane German Club News Letter
June-July 2016
From the President’s Desk
Dear Members and Friends,
Time seems to fly so fast. Mother’s Day is behind us again. It was a successful day and everyone had a good time.
Our 133rd Anniversary Ball has also passed. Regrettably, not all members and friends could come as it was held on a Wednesday.
Thank you to the Ladies’ Group, the Kaffee-Klatsch and staff for setting up the Hall. Nice job, well done. A big thank you to Paul Sowa OAM, for his great presentation on our special evening.
Thank you to Leo Keller OAM a n d o u r L i e d e r t a f e l /Liederkranz choir for their performance. Also, thank you Rae Onger and the Alpenrosen group for their performance. Well done to both groups as always. Our resident musician Andrew, and the Echo Band, once again provided fantastic entertainment throughout the
night, which was enjoyed by all. Thanks Andrew.
Thank you to Mrs Karin Williams, our Patron of the German Club, for her support. We had a taste of her yodelling, which was as good as ever.
Thank you to all our friends and guests for attending our special evening. A big thank you to Tony and the bar staff, the office staff and the kitchen staff. The service and food was excellent and everyone enjoyed it.
Congratulations to our Silver (25 years) and Gold (50 years) Needle recipients. Silver Needles went to Freia Reshka and Ulrich Roesen. Gold Needles went to Anthony Bondarenko, Hans Kleine, Guenter Koll, Gerd Kramer, Werner Pettrup and Karl Probst. Not all could make it to the function, due to ill health. May we wish
them all the best in their recovery.
Our next big function will be the Liedertafel/Liederkranz Concert on Sunday 31 July. Please see details inside the newsletter and remember to book early for seating.
Come August we have our nom ina t ion , the n i n September, it’s our AGM and elections again. Notification of the date and time will be posted to you regarding this meeting.
Not long after that it’s Oktoberfest. Dates and times are on our website.
Once more, a big thank to all.
With regards,
Your President

Stammtisch News
A happy birthday to the Club from the Stammtisch group, 133 years young and going strong. What a milestone to reach!
Our monthly meetings are continuing with great success. New people have been coming to our gatherings, shifting focus to broader communication by contributing interesting and adventurous stories.
Winter is truly on its way though, we had to get the blankets out and that means we are getting closer to our yearly event and highlight “Feuerzangenbowle” in July. Traditionally, we
meet at a Stammtischler’s home and set some delicious red wine on fire. How does this work – go ahead and google this long standing tradition. The German Club should have Glühwein again soon, too. YUM.
If you’d like to join us, please find us on Facebook or
email us. Our details are to the left.

Frauengruppe/Ladies’ Auxiliary News
Dear Members and Friends,
Mother’s Day has gone and it was very nice again I was told. Sorry I could not come to the Club for some weeks as I was sick. I’d like to thank Ingrid, Karen, Wolfhardt and Trudy who picked the meat trays for the raffles.
Every mother received a red rose on arrival from the President, Horst Langer, and a glass of champagne to start off Mother’s Day with beautiful memories. The tables were nicely decorated with flowers and serviettes for the nibbles.
Our raffle prizes - the meat trays, ‘Dinner for Two’
and surprises from the Bar - are much appreciated.
Thank you to the Bar Manager and thank you to the
Chef and his team. I am hoping to be able to see you
all next Frühschoppen.
Best Regards,
Ingrid and Dorit

Dear Members,
Well, winter is well upon us now, and in keep-
ing with tradition we will now have our tradi-
tional hot Glühwein available. Brewed from
an age old secret recipe, handed down from
barkeep to barkeep, it is guaranteed to ward
off the winter chills. Be sure to try one when
next you are in.
You can also look forward to seeing on tap in
the near future: Stone and Wood’s 2016
Vintage Stone Beer, Balmain Bock and Maisels Weisse
Hefe-weizen.
The other new additions are in our Schnapps Freezer:
Chilli, Blood Orange and Pear. There is also a special
Beer Whiskey available.

The bench around the tree in the beer garden for members to sit on and contemplate the beauty of their surroundings is nearly finished. We still need some volunteers to put the finishing touches to it. The back garden at the kitchen has been cleared of plants which have been transferred to the front near the tree. Work is on the way to start the herb garden for the kitchen now.
Next meeting will be held on Sunday 10 July at 11.30am. We’ll have someone coming to the meeting to give advice on our new Club shirts. Please be sure not to miss this meeting. As advertised in the last Newslet-ter, dart games will now be held on

Liedertafel/Liederkranz News
Dear Members & Friends,
On behalf of the Liedertafel/Liederkranz allow me to invite you to our next concert, Swarzwald und die Umbebung (Black Forest and Surrounds).
This concert will feature folk songs of the forests and mountains but the highlight will be excerpts from the Schwarzwald Mädel, a delightful German operetta by Leon Jessel. This musical premiered at the old Komische Oper in Berlin in 1917 and ran for 900 performances.
It has a touching libretto by August Neidhart and its appealing melodies have remained popular over time.
The choir has reacted with excitement and enthusiasm at rehearsals for this concert which I'm sure our audience will also e n j o y i t e n o r m o u s l y . I recommend this concert to you and look forward to greeting you all.

Alpenrosen News
It has been a busy time for the Dance group, with performances at a Multicultural Harmony Festival, the
Purity Laws celebration and Bethania Lutheran School’s 40th birthday celebrations (where members had
performed 20 years ago also!) We have also had school groups join us on rehersal nights for dinner and
some entertainment.
The highlight was the performance for the Anniversary Ball. Thank you to the lovely members who com-
plimented us on our new performance routine and our ever-growing dance group.
We have welcomed our newest member to the dance
group - Owen, at 4 years old (pictured). He proudly
led us out at our performance at Bethania Lutheran.
Thank you to the visitors and members who support
our raffles on game days. The funds raised support
our junior members to attend the Dancefest which
will be held in Canberra next Easter.
Alles Gute,
Paula for Alpenrosen.
