Anyone who lives in or trav-els to an area where Zika virus is found and has not already been infected with Zika virus can get it from mosquito bites. The most current list of the areas endemic with Zika can be found on the CDC website.Transmission

Zika virus is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes spe-cies mosquito (A. aegypti and A. albopictus) mosquito. These mosquitoes typically lay eggs in and near standing water in things like buckets, bowls, animal dishes, flower pots

McLennan County health department warns of zika threatand vases. They prefer to bite people, and live indoors and outdoors near people.

A pregnant woman can pass Zika virus to her fetus during pregnancy. Zika is a cause of microcephaly and other severe fetal brain defects. To date, no reports have been made of in-fants getting Zika virus through breastfeeding.Prevention

Enjoy the outdoors, but remember to protect yourself, your family and your pets from mosquito-borne diseases, your best defense against being bitten is simply to be prepared

by taking the following precau-tions:

When outdoors, prevent mosquito bites by using an EPA-registered insect repellent that contains one of the follow-ing: DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus.Follow product instructions

When weather permits, wear long sleeves, long pants, and socks. For infants, place mos-quito netting over infant carri-ers, cribs and strollers

The 2016 La Vega Pirates football team will seek a repeat of the perfect 2015 16-0 season that earned them a state championship.

A repeat state title is not easy to claim in the competitive Texas football scene.

Though no team is the same one year later, this team retains powerhouse players state championship

La Vega Pirates aim to defend state titleMVP Kemoche Hobbs, third year quarterback Jamal Williams, Alabama commit Kedrick James.

They are enough to make other teams take notice and see La Vega as the team to beat this season.

In most preseason polls, La Vega is ranked behind Argyle, another strong contender for the state title.

TSTC technical program receives accreditationThe Precision Machining Technology

program at Texas State Technical College in Waco recently received its fi rst program accreditation from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills Inc.

The nationally recognized certifi cation means the technical program meets NIMS’s standards for training future industry work-ers for a global workforce. The accreditation lasts fi ve years, after which the time the program can reapply.

“For some time, I had been looking for an opportunity to provide a higher level of train-ing for our students,” said Jose Rodriguez, chair of the Precision Machining Technology program. “We needed to meet high stan-dards. The standards needed to be credible and acceptable nationally.”

Rodriguez said he wanted the accredita-tion not only for current students, but also

for veterans and those already working in machining and manufacturing who do not have a formal academic background. The students will now be able to earn NIMS na-tional skills credentials.

Caleb Crawford, 20, of Waxahachie looks forward to working on skills credentials. He said employers should sense his confi dence and how to do processes because of the extra work he will put in.

“It’s hard to get in somewhere if you don’t have experience,” Crawford said.

Colt Gibson, 20, a Precision Machining Technology major from Mason, said getting credentials could help him bring knowledge to small machine shops. And, he hopes his efforts can inspire other workers to pursue certifi cations.

Program faculty used NIMS standards to

realign the curriculum. The work has beendetailed encompassing records keeping, safety enhancements and the developmentof a machine maintenance program, trainingwork procedures and materials inventory.

“The standards are rigorous and havehelped our department re,focus and betterunderstand our physical environment and theeffect on student learning,” Rodriguez said.

The program has about 130 students andoffers an Associate of Applied Science de-gree in Precision Machining Technology anda Certifi cate in Machining. Students learn arange of skills like measuring, blueprint read-ing, design and machine operations.

TSTC joins Amarillo College and SouthTexas College in McAllen as the only highereducation institutions in Texas with the cer-tifi cation.
