“O lord, help me prepare for this sacred
and joyous season. As the season becomes
hectic, help me to remember to slow down
and enjoy the love of my family, friends,
and church community. Allow me to rec-
ognize those in need and realize that time,
friendship, and love are the greatest and often
the most cherished gifts during the holiday
season.”
- Jane Sparks
Christmas Prayer
God of love, Father of all, the darkness that covered the earth
has given way to the bright dawn of your Word made flesh.
Make us a people of this light. Make us faithful to your Word,
that we may bring your life to the waiting world.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
(This and the prayer above were submitted by Carolyn Brennan, authors unknown)
The Prayer Corner
I wish all of you a very blessed Christmas filled with all the caring and sharing you can find
not only among your own family members, neighbors, your 'Sisters' and friends but among the poor, needy,
and the homeless too! Deb Ramirez, President
"Wishing you the blessings of peace, love and joy this Christmas!" Cheri Allan, VP
A blessed Christmas to all! Remember the 12 days of Christmas begin with Christmas Day and extend to Epiphany. As the wise men brought the message of the joy and peace of Christ's birth back to their own
country, may you be inspired to bring that message to your own 'country' in the new year! Sandy Ross, Secretary
May the Lord and His Blessed Mother bestow many gifts of love, comfort, joy, and peace throughout the Christmas season to you and all of your loved ones. Karli Gama, Financial Secretary
" Happy Holidays to you and your families! Take time this holiday season to cherish your loved ones,
make happy memories, and enjoy the good food. May 2017 bring many fun times
to all of us Columbiettes!" Mary Peterson, Treasurer
I wish everyone peace, harmony and love this Christmas season and throughout the new year.

Alice Everett-Farrar was born in Toppenish, Washington, and moved around the state as a child. The question she has always heard from hair salons is, “What color is on your hair?” This natural strawberry-blonde, just in case you were wondering, has never colored her hair! In high school, she was awarded a pin for reaching 120 wpm in shorthand writing; she also engaged in her first volunteer effort, Heart Fund, by going door to door. At 17, Alice married, moved around for the next ten years, adopted a baby girl, and settled in Seattle in 1967, attending St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in the Ballard/Greenwood area.
Alice was very active at St. John’s. In the church, she was awarded yearly recognition, eleven years in a row, for writing monthly interviews of parishioners to help form the long history of the church. She served as secretary to the parish council, was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul group, serving their annual dinners, was a Eucharistic Minister, was a door greeter for Mass, sang in the choir, and was a song leader for Mass. She was in many musical plays and given she has sewn since she was 12, made many costumes for those plays. Concurrently, she performed and sewed for Mountaineers Theatre Group in the community. In the school, Alice kept pace by writing, printing, and distributing the monthly school newsletter. She was president and vice president of the parents’ group. She was also awarded the Greenwood School PTA “Golden Acorn” for working with children and ten years serving in Camp Fire Girls.
The year 1980 was a special year! Alice graduated from Shoreline Community College with an Associates of Arts degree in Office Administration/Legal Option. She also went to work full-time, learned to swim and to drive a car! In 1981, she began exercising by doing floor aerobics for ten years, followed by six years of water aerobics.
Alice became a widow in 2000 after caring for her ailing husband, raising a grandson, and working full-time for many years. She married her current husband, Al Farrar, in 2005, moved to Puyallup, and became a member of All Saints Catholic Church. Al and Alice were featured in a Seattle Times article on internet dating in 2005. In 2011, they were again interviewed by King 5’s reporter, Jake Whittenberg. While dance had always been an interest, and she participated in it with her daughter’s classes and recitals, in 2004, she and Albert began ballroom dancing. They won the Tango Solo in 2009 in the Washington State Senior Games. She and Al continue to dance regularly.
This active grandmother of four and great-grandmother of two, after the days of her water aerobics, found Curves in 2003. She has done almost 1900 workouts with them since. The same year, she joined the Red Hat Ladies and was made Queen of the first group in Seattle, a second, and a third group, all at the same time! Currently, Alice is active with one group in Puyallup. Karaoke singing has become an obsession, and she sings several times a month at the Sumner and Puyallup Senior Centers. She has written poetry and essays that Al included in his published short stories book. Together, they have travelled on many trips and cruises. They have been to the Caribbean, Ireland (DNA says she’s half Irish), to England (DNA says she’s 29% English), Hawaii three times, twice to Alaska, and twice to the Panama Canal. They enjoy long car trips as well.
In her tenure at All Saints, Alice has sewn many costumes for ASTRA, led the 39’ers senior group and still hosts pinochle for seniors once a month, has recently become a member of the Servants of St. Teresa and serves as its secretary, and for two years has made soups for Lenten suppers. In 2015, she decided to join the Columbiettes.
Alice had breast cancer surgery in January of 2016 and after a few months, things returned to somewhat normal. She regretted no being able to get her garden planted last spring, but strawberries and raspberries kept her busy during that time. Most of the gardens in her yard were established by her since moving into their downtown Puyallup home in 2009.
I’d say to our lovely Alice...what a life well-lived! Thanks for sharing and inspiring all of us :)!

Tips for a Spiritual Advent
Source: http://catholicfire.blogspot.com/
Advent is a season of waiting, a season filled with hope. Ten tips for making this Advent a holier one for you and your family:
1. Take the entire family, as often as possible, to daily Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, and to the sacrament of Reconciliation.
2. On days when you are unable to attend Mass, read and reflect on the Scriptures for that day.
3. Use an Advent calendar and/or a wreath to mark this time of preparation. Pray Advent prayers with the family and the rosary when
you light up the candle on the wreath. Sing 'O Come, O Come, Emmanuel' throughout Advent.
4. Curtail unnecessary shopping and activities focusing on the material aspects of Christmas. Instead, increase prayer and focus on serv-
ing others, such as volunteering at a soup kitchen or helping a neighbor who is elderly, unemployed, or disabled.
5. Have children write a letter to Jesus instead of Santa.
6. Participate in the Giving Tree at church. Have your children buy a gift to donate to children in need.
7. Only put out some of the animals in your Nativity set in your home. Each week, read a little from the Christmas story in Luke's Gos-
pel, and move the other statues a little closer. Wait until Christmas to put the Baby Jesus in the manger.
8. Have the children place a piece of straw in the manger for each good deed they do during Advent as a gift to the baby Jesus.
9. Light a candle before the Blessed Mother when visiting the Blessed Sacrament.
10. St. Lucy cakes: The feast of St. Lucy, is on December 13th. This marks the opening of the Christmas season in Sweden. Her life story
can be found in most saints books, as can the recipe for the traditional cakes. The symbolism is rich and her life story worthwhile read-
ing.

A Message from our Supreme President
It’s hard to believe that the joyful sounds of Christmas are in the air. It might be easy to run away to a monastery, away
from commercialization, the hectic hustle, the demanding family responsibilities of Christmas-time. Then we would have a
holy Christmas. But we would forget the lesson of the Incarnation, the taking on of a human nature by God the Son, when he
became Man and was born of the Virgin Mary. The lesson that we who are followers of Jesus do not run from the secular,
rather we try to transform it. It is our mission to make holy the secular aspects of Christmas just as the early Christians bap-
tized the Christmas Tree. We do this by being holy people, as well as kind, patient, generous, loving, laughing people, no
matter how maddening the Christmas rush will be.
I am very grateful to have the opportunity to serve as your Supreme President for another year. As I traveled to the dif-
ferent States and Territories, I had the opportunity of meeting many of my Sister Columbiettes, as well as hearing and learn-
ing about the outstanding programs that each of their auxiliaries are undertaking so they can continue their involvement with-
in our organization’s circle of charity, fraternity and growth. I am truly proud of all your accomplishments and please contin-
ue to spread the Columbiettes Message of Faith, Joy, Hope and Love.
This Christmas please remember in your prayers all our men and women serving in our Armed Forces, Our Holy Father,
Pope Francis, Our World Leaders and their Families, the sick and mentally ill people throughout the world, religious vocations
and lastly, all your Sister Columbiettes and Brother Knights.
May you and your families have a most Blessed Christmas and a Joyful New Year. May the peace of the Christmas sea-
son be with you all year long and may we have peace on earth.
Patricia Zellner
Christmas Greetings from the Chairperson of the Supreme Expansion Committee
I am truly delighted to report that the Supreme Council Columbiette organization has “grown and prospered” by
adding three new Territories in just the past 12 months! On December 12, 2015, we instituted the first
Columbiette auxiliary in the state of Washington, All Saints Auxiliary #1629 in Puyallup, WA. On February 27,
2016, we instituted the first Columbiette auxiliary in the state of Tennessee, Blessed John XXIII #14341 in
Knoxville, TN. On November 5, 2016, we instituted the first Columbiette auxiliary in the state of Missouri,
Father Robert A. Hager Auxiliary #7064, Gladstone, MO. This amazing accomplishment was possible because
of the support and guidance of Supreme President Patricia Zellner along with the cooperation of Supreme
Ceremonial Chairperson Jeanne Mucci and all the ladies who volunteered to be part of the Degree Teams who
traveled to Washington, Tennessee and Missouri. May our Blessed Mother Mary, St. Theresa the Little Flower,
and St. Joan of Arc continue to bless the Columbiettes as we continue to grow and prosper.
Years ago I received a card with the following sentiment and I now share it with you: “Christmas is a time to
believe that love will conquer all, that hope will find a way, that joy will light the world, and peace will come
to stay.”
May everyone have a wonderful Thanksgiving, a blessed Christmas, and a happy, healthy and prosperous New
Year.
Carole Samperton, Supreme Director

Prayers and happy wishes for
the lovely birthday ladies below!
Prayer Requests
From Rose Dobbs:
I have a request for prayers for a dear friend. She went through chemo and now is very weak. Her name is Charlene. I got a prayer shawl today for her. She was thrilled. She had no idea that ladies made them in our parish. She is a member of our parish (All Saints).”
From Carolyn Brennan:
“Please pray for my little cousin, Molly Mae LeBlanc. Her transplant numbers are up and she is now at the top of trans-plant list. This means that they will be facing a transplant sooner rather than later. She needs a liver and both kidneys transplanted. Molly Mae is almost 4 years old. She and her parents need your prayers for courage and strength.”
Ongoing Prayers...
For our sister, Linda Correa’s son, Jere-
my, who is battling cancer, and for All
Saint’s 8th grader, Ethan Weir, who is on
life support. May these boys, their fami-
lies, friends, and all who cross their paths
be given strength, healing, compassion,
and grace in the midst of heartache.
Prayers and blessings for
Columbiette, Keely Connelly,
and fiance, Chandler Bules, on
their December 17th wedding
at All Saints. Lots of love to
her mom, Columbiette, Julie
Connelly, and the rest of the
family! Congratulations!!

The Gold Wrapping Paper - An Inspirational Short Christmas Story
Once upon a time, there was a man who worked very hard just to keep food on the table for his family. This particular year a few days before Christmas, he punished his little five-year-old daughter after learning that she had used up the family's only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper.
As money was tight, he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve he saw that the child had used all of the expensive gold paper to decorate one shoebox she had put under the Christmas tree. He also was concerned about where she had gotten money to buy what was in the shoebox.
Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy!"
As he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, now regretting how he had punished her.
But when he opened the shoebox, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. "Don't you know, young lady," he said harshly, "when you give some-one a present, there's supposed to be something inside the package!"
The little girl looked up at him with sad tears rolling from her eyes and whis-pered: "Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full."
The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his pre-cious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger.
An accident took the life of the child only a short time later. It is told that the father kept this little gold box by his bed for all the years of his life. Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems, he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child who had put it there.
In a very real sense, each of us has been given an invisible golden box filled
with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God.
There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.
