After affair, former Norman coach will not teach again (/gallery/articleid/3350571/1/pictures/546597) Vicky Lynn Lewallen BY JANE GLENN CANNON • Published: March 5, 2009 NORMAN — A former high school basketball coach who had an affair with a student was sentenced Wednesday to two years in prison. Vicky Lynn Lewallen, 45, of Norman must spend eight more years on probation after her release. Cleveland County District Judge Bill Hetherington decided her punishment. Lewallen was led from the courtroom in handcuffs after a daylong sentencing hearing in which the student testified she initiated sexual relations with Lewallen and "doesn’t regret it.” Lewallen was accused of having sexual relations with a 16-year-old student at Norman North High School. Lewallen, who coached the girls’ basketball team and taught science, pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to two counts of forcible sodomy stemming from the 2007 sexual encounters at Lewallen’s home. Lewallen resigned her posts at the high school after the sexual relationship came to light and charges were filed. Prosecutor Jennifer Austin said Lewallen will have to register as a sex offender once released from prison and she will not be allowed to teach. In a report to a therapist entered into court records, Lewallen described the relationship as "loving, mutual and consensual.” The judge called it "a parent’s worst nightmare. It is a case where a teacher and coach ... chooses to have an illegal sexual relationship with a student.” Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Austin said it made no difference the relationship was consensual. "This is a very serious crime any time a teacher violates a relationship with a student,” she said. Defense attorney Steve Stice said he was disappointed in the sentence because Lewallen has admitted the relationship was wrong and has been undergoing sex offender counseling. "We’re concerned that her therapy will be disrupted while she is in prison, but she’s strong. She’s committed to getting back to it once she is released. She will get out, and she’ll start over,” he said.
