John Donald Robb

John Donald Robb (1892-1989) led a rich and varied life as an internaHonal aZorney, composer, arts educator, folk-song collector and preservaHonist, and author. He was the Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico from 1942-57 and was responsible for starHng the UNM Symphony and many other educaHonal iniHaHves. Robb studied composiHon with leading composers of the day such as HoraHo Parker, Roy Harris, Paul Hindemith, Darius Milhaud, and Nadia Boulanger. He composed symphonies, concertos, sonatas, chamber and other instrumental music, choral works, songs and arrangements of folk songs, two operas and a musical comedy, and his music omen reflected his love for the culture and landscape of the Southwest.

In his 70s, amer becoming one of the first in the country to purchase a Moog synthesizer, he turned to composing electronic music and is considered a notable pioneer in that field where he is represented by more than 65 electronic works. PublicaHons by Robb include Hispanic Folk Songs of New Mexico (1954; revised ediHon by UNM Press, 2008); his authoritaHve book, Hispanic Folk Music of New Mexico and the Southwest: A Self Portrait of a People (1980), which was re-published by UNM Press in 2014, and Cancionero: Songs of Laughter & Faith in New Mexico (UNM Press, 2015).

During his tenure at UNM, Robb’s fascinaHon with Hispanic folk music led him to collect 3,000 field recordings of tradiHonal songs and dances from the American Southwest, South America and Nepal. These songs, now easily accessed digitally through the UNM Libraries’ Center for Southwest Research (CSWR), form the nucleus of the John Donald Robb Archive of Southwestern Music, which is housed in the CSWR. Robb received numerous honors and grants, including the honorary Doctor of Music from the University of New Mexico, and all genres of his works are sHll performed today.

About the Artwork Raymond Jonson:Pure Aesthe5c Emo5on

Raymond Jonson (1891 – 1982) was an American abstract painter who was a key figure in New Mexico Modernist painHng throughout his career. Moving to New Mexico in 1924, Jonson brought with him a passion and dedicaHon to the most avant-garde ideas regarding the visual arts and their potenHal to transcend mere representaHon. Like many maverick arHsts of his Hme, Jonson worked against the grain of the art world and approached his painHngs through experimentaHon and a keen interest in shiming how we engage with a work of art. Taking inspiraHon from avant-garde arHsts like Wassily Kandinsky,

Jonson was concerned with the spiritual relevance of the arts. He uHlized form and color as a way to explore the emoHonal, provocaHve, and life-changing impact of painHng on an individual’s everyday experience – arguing for a “pure aestheHc emoHon” to lim the experience out of “sweet-preZy commonplace.” He omen turned to music as inspiraHon and was moHvated by a desire to bring “rhythmic and unifying harmonies” to his visual composiHons. His visionary approach to painHng influenced his contemporaries as well as future generaHons of arHsts and his legacy is forever connected to New Mexico.

- Traci Quinn, UNM Art Museum Curator of EducaHon and Public Programs

“What I want and expect to get is a form that will funcDon as nicely in color as in music” – Raymond Jonson.

Featured GuestsEmanuele Arciuli Emanuele Arciuli has established himself as one of the most original and interesHng performers on today’s classical music scene. His repertoire ranges from Bach to contemporary music, with a strong affinity for composers from the United States. He conHnuously develops new projects and is in constant pursuit of new ideas and innovaHve programs. Round Midnight VariaDons, a group of 16 composiHons that were wriZen expressively for Arciuli by composers such as Crumb, BabbiZ, Kernis, Rzewski, Torke, Daugherty, Bolcom and Harbison, has recently sparked the interest of internaHonal criHcs. The variaHons, which were released by Stradivarius on CD under the Htle, Round Midnight – Hommage to Thelonious Monk, in May 2011, have been celebrated by the internaHonal press. His newest comprehensive book on American piano music, “Musica per pianoforte negli StaH UniH,” was recently published in Italy. In May 2011, Arciuli was awarded with the most important Italian criHc’s prize, the Premio Franco AbbiaH. In winning this prize, he follows in the footsteps of Maurizio Pollini, Radu Lupu and Zubin Mehta. The jury stated, “This pianist from Bari has been an authoritaHve figure on the mulHfaceted horizon of all things modern for years, all the while preserving a connecHon to tradiHon.” More informaHon at: hZp://www.emanuelearciuli.com/.

Ardid String QuartetThe ArdiS Quartet enjoys a world-wide reputaHon for its spirited and technically refined interpretaHons of contemporary and earlier 20th century music. Many hundreds of string quartets and other chamber works have been wriZen for the ensemble since its founding by first violinist Irvine ArdiS in 1974. World premieres of quartets by composers such as Abrahamsen, Ades, Andriessen, Aperghis, Birtwistle, BriZen, Cage, Carter, Denisov, Dillon, Dufourt, Dusapin, Fedele, Ferneyhough, Francesconi, Gubaidulina, Guerrero, Harvey, Hosokawa, Kagel, Kurtag, Lachenmann, LigeH, Maderna, Manoury, Nancarrow, Reynolds, Rihm, Scelsi, Sciarrino, Stockhausen and Xenakis and hundreds more show the wide range of music in the ArdiS Quartet’s repertoire. The ensemble believes that close collaboraHon with composers is vital to the process of interpreHng modern music, and therefore it aZempts to work with every composer whose work it plays. The ArdiS Quartet’s extensive discography now features more than 200 CDs. Over the past 30 years, the ensemble has received many prizes for its work. It has won the Deutsche SchallplaZen Preis several Hmes and the Gramophone Award for the best recording of contemporary music in 1999 (EllioZ Carter), in 2002 (Harrison Birtwistle) and in 2018 (Pascal Dusapin). In 2004 the quartet was awarded the Coup de Coeur prize by the Academie Charles Cros in France for its excepHonal contribuHon to the disseminaHon of contemporary music. The presHgious Ernst von Siemens Music Prize was awarded to the group in 1999 for lifeHme achievement in music. ArdiS remains the only ensemble ever to receive it. A History of the Composers’ Symposium

In 1972, William Wood invited Norman Lockwood to have works of his performed at the University of New Mexico alongside UNM student composers during a late-April concert program. This marked the beginning of what is now known as the UNM John Donald Robb Composers’ Symposium, an event that has occurred annually and uninterrupted since then, making it one of the longest-running fesHvals of new music in the world.

The next years included a cavalcade of significant composers including Ned Rorem, Karel Husa, John Harbison and John Cage, among others. Always, experimentaHon was encouraged. It didn’t take long for the symposium to gain an internaHonal reputaHon.

One featured guest was invited to each symposium unHl 1989. In honor of the university’s centennial that year, the symposium honored 40 UNM Music Department alumni and friends, with special tributes going to John Donald Robb, former dean of the UNM College of Fine Arts. That year, the Robb Concert was established, beginning a tradiHon in which a composiHon of the former dean would be performed at every symposium. A decade later, the symposium was renamed the John Donald Robb Composers’ Symposium to honor the former dean who had been instrumental in developing the music program at UNM. As the Department of Music faculty became more involved, a full schedule of dayHme masterclasses and lectures featuring visiHng guests was introduced, providing exciHng opportuniHes for students. The symposium is now presented jointly by the UNM Department of Music and the John Donald Robb Musical Trust.

Beginning in the 1990s, the symposium experimented with themes, such as film music and music theory and jazz. More recent themes have included music and movement, social issues in contemporary music, and the influence of NaHve American culture and composers on new music.
