The genuine courtesy I received when I came to UW for the graduate school interview made me want to come back. I felt like the faculty

and graduate students in the department wanted me to join their team. The opportunity to do research with my Ph.D. advisor and living

in a small town makes it worthwhile.

One of the things I bring to my job is that I have a lot of professional experience, and I try to really draw on that. I see [my relationship with students] as more of an apprenticeship relationship. I really make it a point to show the kids what I’m working on so that they see a product from start to finish. That seems to have a strong impact on our students.

As a faculty member at Al-Nahrain University in Iraq, I was awarded a scholarship to study Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of Wyoming. I chose UW for my study because of the rigorous Ph.D. program it has in civil engineering/structural engineering. I returned home as a lecturer and head of the Post-Graduate Department. I am proud to have been a graduate student at UW and I will never forget that experience.
