Character TrackingMark AntonyBefore this scene, we didn’t know much about who Antony is. He obeyed Caesar without question and seemed to be more muscle than brains. However, here we begin to see what Antony is really made of. He wants to take Caesar’s body to the marketplace in order to give him a funeral and explain to the people what has happened. Although he promises not to speak badly of the conspirators, it’s pretty obviously not going to go down like that.

The Famous Funeral Speeches Part IAs agreed, Brutus will address the Roman public first to explain why they killed Caesar. He has to be persuasive in his speech to keep the public on his side. However, as we saw in ACT I scene i of the play, the Roman public are notoriously fickle.

1. Brutus claims that he loved Caesar, but he loves __________ more.

2. To convince the audience of why Caesar had to die, Brutus claims that Caesar would have made everyone a __________.

3. Brutus acknowledges Caesar’s good attributes (valiant and loving), but he claims that because Caesar was _______________, he had to die.

4. What does Brutus promise the people he will do if it pleases his country? _____________________________________

Rhetoric

Brutus uses Ethos, Pathos, and Logos to persuade the Roman people. He truly believes the things he says, and uses these deeply-held Roman ideals as a basis for his speech. Romans value their freedom and honor above all else-- even their own lives.

RhetoricWe get to see a new side to Antony in this scene. He is far more than Caesar’s “yes man”. He’s a powerful and persuasive speaker who uses his rhetorical skills to persuade the audience into believing that Caesar did not deserve the death he was given. Antony doesn’t stop there, though. He indirectly condemns Brutus and the conspirators!

Questions - The following questions will be based on analysis using Ethos, Pathos, & Logos. Use your Rhetoric Checksheet to help you answer.1. Which does Antony use when he addresses the crowd as “Friends, Romans, Countrymen”? ______Explain-________________________________________________________________________________2. The meaning of the word “Honorable” changes in this scene. Explain how it changes. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________3. How does Antony use Pathos in the 6th panel?______________________________________________________________________________________4. What evidence (Logos) does Antony provide to show that Caesar WAS NOT ambitious? ____________________________________________________5. Guilt is a powerful motivator. Rhetoric

Antony is much more persuasive than Brutus. Brutus relies heavily on Logos and Ethos to make his speech effective. However, Antony goes even further by incorporating Pathos into his entire speech even when he uses Logos and Ethos. For a fickle audience like the Roman public, emotion will always win the day.

Questions - The following questions will be based on analysis using Ethos, Pathos, & Logos. Use your Rhetoric Checksheet to help you answer.1. In the second panel, do you think Antony honestly cares if he does Brutus wrong? Explain-________________________________________________________________________________2.What item of Caesar’s does Antony use as bait to get the attention of the crowd? ______________3. How has the crowd’s attitude toward the conspirators changed since Brutus gave his speech?______________________________________________________________________________________4. Does Antony actually know which stab mark in Caesar’s cloak belongs to which conspirator? ___5. Explain the rhetorical effect of assigning ownership to each dagger mar to a conspirator._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Character Tracking - AntonyWe now see Antony for who he really is. We don’t know yet whether his motivation for swaying the crowd is to avenge Caesar or for his own personal ambition. Either way, his method is effective and very dangerous. He’s definitely not someone who we would want to underestimate. Keep your eye on him!

Mob/Herd Mentality (social Psychology)

The idea of a "group mind" or "mob behavior" was first put forward by 19th-century French social psychologists Gabriel Tarde and Gustave Le Bon.

This concept explains the behavior that occurs when a group of individuals must make a decision and, instead of thinking for themselves, they side with the individual within the group with whom they either closely relate to or want to imitate.

2. What reason do they give for “Tearing” him after they discover he’s not the conspirator?_______________________________________________

3. Is the thought process of the mob logical?___Explain _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
