Call for Artist – unJURIED Exhibition presented by Jon Henry of the Old Furnace Artist Residency

Everyone is an artist. Everything is art. All artists are invited to exhibit their work in the March unJURIED show at the Darrin-McHone Gallery. Part of the submission process involves dropping off work during the times specified below – work submitted at any other time will not be accepted. All work must be exhibition ready and easy to hang. There is no cost to submit, but only one submission per artist, please. Jon Henry of Old Furnace Artist Residency will curate the work as it is submitted-creating stories, surprise, systems, shock, and subtexts. The audience will be presented with many questions and very few answers: What connections, connotations, and conjectures arise through the pairing of a pizza box and quilt? When do objects share functions, forms, or familiarities? Do pairings create new work together? Who is the artist? Why is a pastoral landscape painting next to chicken noodle soup soup can? How isn’t it art? The exhibition will feature a limited print catalog that documents all participants and their drop-off times. Work must be dropped off at the Arts Council of the Valley only during the following times:

Monday, March 2: 3 pm – 5pm Tuesday, March 3: 1 pm – 3pm

Wednesday, March 4: 11 am – 1 pm Thursday, March 5: 9 am – 11am

Friday, March 6: 9- Noon

Juror’s Statement In 1917, the Society of Independent Artists organized an unJURIED exhibition that accepted anything, granted, the artist had to pay $1. Yet, they ended up rejecting Marcel Duchamp’s “Fountain”, which radically changed the paradigms of art. Art could be anything – even a urinal!

In 1973, Joseph Beuys furthered Duchamp’s paradigm shift by announcing “Everyone is an Artist!” Thus, we now live in a world where everything is art and everyone is an artist.

These historical quips are the building blocks for this year’s unJURIED exhibition at the Arts Council of the Valley’s Darrin-McHone Gallery in the Smith House. The exhibition is an attempt to shift paradigms, conversations, imaginations, professions, and visions. It is a foray towards igniting new stories, surprises, systems, shocks, and subtexts. It’s an exposure of perspectives, regulations, politics, rules, power, and regimes. I hope this exhibition has a local affect around the potentialities of art and artists.

For this unJURIED exhibition, I attempted to remove as many barriers as possible from the system. The only restraint was the timing of the drop off moments. Time becomes the curator, judge, and juror of the exhibition: how philosophical. When thinking of Time, I couldn’t help but think of Space, hence the zip codes. They tell a story of pilgrimage towards the gallery.

Now it’s time for you to make your own stories
