UW TACOMA DESIGN PRINCIPLES
1. Maintain and expand porous boundaries with community, rather than turning inward. Encourage mixed use.
2. Connect upper and lower campus. Address the topography.3. Insist on beauty and design integrity. Understand what makes the
campus buildings beautiful.4. Provide vivid, inviting engagement for students, first and foremost,
but also for community.5. Exemplify the interdisciplinary and integrative logic that is core to
UWT’s academic character and identity.6. Create buildings that purposely relate to open spaces and
connections to other parts of campus and community.7. Respect, honor and employ the power of campus landscape.8. Seek to organize and articulate our unique sense of place.

Questions You May Have…
• How does the ‘price competition’ work?• What counts as experience for recreational
facilities and/or student life projects?• Who is on the Selection Committee?• What is the basis of the budget?• What are the sustainability goals?• Will this be a “UW building” for systems,
assemblies, and design review process?• When will the project be officially approved and
funded?
