Letter from the EditorHorrah! It’s summer! We here at Home and Away know this is the perfect time to enjoy the British weather as well as jet off to even hotter climates for experiences that you just don’t seem to get in good old Blighty. If you fancy a quick break turn to page 12 where Chloe Ellis has found the perfect weekends away in Britain or if you fancy something more adventurous try page 17 for stories about interrailing around Europe to see if it’s for you.

We also know that summer is the season for weddings and honeymoons as well as a time couples find it hard to get away without the kids. We have answered all of your prayers with fishing out the most beautiful and luxurious places on the planet to tie the knot on page 25 as well as dream honeymoon locations on page 29. For those quiet holidays without yours or anyone elses children try page 44 where our writer Cathy Greig has done her research to help you plan that relaxing vacation you need.

Writer Amy Bennett has been exploring Singapore (oh she has a tough life), to find the places to visit, restaurants to eat at and things to do that will make your trip a guaranteed pleasure. Plus much more, this month is all about enjoying yourself and perhaps even doing something a little bit different. So what are you waiting for? Get those sunglasses on, catch some rays and have a read!

Around the world: July 2012

London has hosted the Olympic Games on two past occasions, in 1908 and 1948, with the third happening in July 2012. London is the first city to have hosted the modern Games of three Olympiads and is the only city in the United Kingdom to have ever hosted the Olympics; the United States is the only country to have hosted Summer Olympics on more occasions than the UK. No city in the UK has hosted the Winter Olympic Games.

From the Olympic Games to Independence Day, July is a particularly busy month for not only England, but the rest of the world. Here you can find out what is happening around the globe this July.

England – London 2012 Olympic Games

Commonly known as fourth of July, Independence Day is a federal holiday that commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Fireworks, parades, barbecues and carnivals are just a few of the traditions associated with the holiday.

America – Independence Day

To celebrate China’s favourite flower, there is a week long celebration involving music, dance and many floral exbhitions. The month -long festival will run from the beginining of July all the way through to August. Visitors will be able to view the beautiful lotus, pick lotus sees pods and watch folk drama perfomances.

China - West Lake Lotus Festival

A three-day speed rally of star speedsters and the world’s biggest and most diverse classic motor sports event is happening in West Sussex. The event starts at the end of June and continues into the beginning of July. It is a chance for motorsport enthusiasts to watch classic vehicles from all eras and all classes show off what they can do. The cars that participate in this weekend include: Formula One, Le Mans, World Rallying cars, Indy 500, Bergspyders and Endurance Road Racers.

New ResortsRadisson Blu currently operate over 230 hotels around the world, and have a number of new projects currently being worked on. They can be found in many major cities worldwide as they have their iconic hotels in 90 different countries, and they continue to grow.Radisson Blu Resort, Bukovel

This exciting new hotel is located in Bukovel in the Ukraine. It is proud to have breathtaking views of the Carpathian Mountains, giving guests the opportunity to go skiing during the winter, before returning to their comfortable and cosy room. At no extra charge, and depending on availability, check-out can be as late as 6pm, allowing an extra day to enjoy the mountains. As a part of the 2000m squared complex, there are several different spa treatments to enjoy too. It only opened in May, and is ready to be discovered.

Radisson Blu Hotel, Maputo

This beauty opened at the beginning of June, and is located in Mozambique. As well as Radisson Blu’s expected services, including the late check-out and Super Breakfast Buffet, Maputo also boasts a large outdoor swimming pool and dedicated sun tanning area. A perfect way to end a busy day exploring the surroundings. Some holiday-makers look for a nearby gym, but here they can find a fitness room onsite, with fitness professionals there to help. The rooms are comfortably spacious and each have their own climate control system.

Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Portimao

Opening earlier this year, this resort provides a slightly different experience to other Radisson Blu holidays. This one isn’t located in a city, it is in a more rural area, creating a much more relaxing experience. After a day of seeing Portugal, the on-site spa and wellness facilities are waiting for you to enjoy a few treatments. The two outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts and on-site hairdresser make the whole holiday an easy and hassle-free one. It also brings new ideas to Portimao, as it is the only hotel in the area to have free wi-fi for their guests, and is the most stylish resort around the area too.

EquipmentWet suits – these are only usually used in the colder climates as an extra layer for warmth but they are good for protection against scrapes from rocks. Snorkel – the main things to consider when choosing a snorkel are comfort and ease of use of the clearing system. Practice using it on dry land before you go on your first trip to get used to it.Mask – make sure it’s comfy. It is important because it allows you to see the underwater world and also separates your nose from the water which helps to regulate your breathingFins – helping you propel yourself through the water with minimum effort means you can explore for longer.

Safety tips- Don’t swim in sites unless they are designated. There are reasons that they haven’t been approved and they could be very dangerous. - When swimming out in hot climates wear a tight top as this will protect you from sun burn- Be aware of currents, winds, wave sets and potential hazards such as rocks to ensure a safe swim- Always snorkel with a buddy in case there are any difficulties- Learn how to float on your back in salt water. This will help if you become in any trouble so you can keep calm and try to call for assistance.- Only observe the wildlife from a distance. Do not try to approach any animals as you could put the creature and yourself in danger.

Good Starting SpotsNingaloo Reef - Western AustraliaHere is where Australia’s largest fringing coral reef is located, running 260kn along the North West coast. The trail consists of underwater monuments with information about the coral that you are exploring.Kapalua Bay – MauiThe bay is protected by two reefs which form a C-shape cove which is excellent for snorkelers. Because of the calm waters this is an excellent place for beginners. Walk along to the north end of the beach to snorkel as the visibility is superb and there are many species of fish to observe.

Ever wanted to explore Europe

all in one go but feel it would be impossible? Well you are very much mistaken. InterRailing started in 1972 and has never failed to create incredible experiences and once in a lifetime trips. With 30 countries and prices at just £154, you can explore Europe via its vast rail network. 31 year old Jodie from Leicester and 37 year old Beth from Reading both decided to go on the trip that is like no other last summer with their partners. If you do not believe us, let them tell you what a remarkable trip a simple rail card can take you on.

What countries did you go to?

Beth: We went to Amsterdam, Berlin, Vienna, Prague, Venice, Budapest, Florence and Barcelona.

Jodie: We managed 13 countries in one month. We started in Amsterdam, and then went on to Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Budapest, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Croatia main land and a Croatian island. We saw Prince Harry on the island then just the week after Beyonce and Jay Z were there! Next was Italy, Vatican City, France, then finally home.

How did you plan to go about travelling and sightseeing? For example did you go to a different country every 2 days etc or just go with the flow?

Beth: We first planned our route with help from the people and brochures at STA travel which give you examples of routes, but we prioritised where we really wanted to go and planned a route that would be simple

by train travel. We like to be organised so made sure we planned everything in advance and made sure we knew we had somewhere to stay.

Jodie: We had a travelling book with us which we called ‘the bible’. It had most train times and information about every city in Europe along with things to do in each country. We read through that, found

things we wanted to do and planned our route around that. Before we set off we decided

Could interailing be your perfect break?

Page 17: University Work - Group Magazine
Page 18: University Work - Group Magazine

we would go across Europe and down to Italy rather that up to Sweden etc. If we liked a place we stayed there longer, or if we met people sometimes we did things with them. We went with the flow but were still conscious that we needed to end up the south of France as that was where our flight home was leaving from.

What were the best parts of your trips?

Jodie: Getting to the black sea was amazing, we were half way round and it was so rewarding to get into that beautiful sea! We spent a lot of time in Turkey and in Italy as there are so many interesting places and things to do in both of those countries. Travelling around the Croatian island was probably one of our favourite elements. Without a doubt, our highlight was meeting so many interesting people. We heard some stories that if I told you, you probably would not believe me.

Beth: Our best parts of the trip were Budapest as it is a beautiful country and also seeing completely different cultures especially as Czech Republic and Hungary who

still have their own currency. Learning lots of different languages and meeting so many different people from different countries was also great as Jodie found.

Were there any negatives?Jodie: Overnight trains and

passport control could be an issue. Every time you leave a country, everyone has to exit the train for a passport check, and then you move literally 2 meters before you have a

passport check for the country you’re going into. Getting into turkey was the worst, we all had to have our bags scanned, and get visas which we did not know we needed so I would advise making sure you ask

before you go about any visas you may need.

Beth: The heat can make it frustrating when carrying a huge back pack around and with short time in countries you want to make the most of the experience so you do get very tired but the train journeys make a great time to sleep.

What would you say is a must see?

Jodie: There is so much to see! Lake Balaton in Hungary was

amazing. It is a natural heated lake with bars and restaurants and open stages with random bands playing, just an incredible sight. Budapest is a place I would advise everyone to go, there is so much to do with hidden gems everywhere, a definite recommendation.

Beth: I agree you must not miss Budapest. Their ‘ruin bars’ used to be apartments that became derelict and then were turned into bars. It is an amazing atmosphere with bath tubs for sofas and black and white movies playing. There is a rooftop bar which is great as you can see the whole of Budapest. Venice is also beautiful and is a must see in the summer as it is so hot but is a completely different world to the UK.

Where had the best food and why?

Jodie: Easy question, Italy. It goes without saying; everything was fresh, hot and tasty and it was made with so much passion. However, the Italians can eat a lot and they eat all the time so the portions were

incredible.Beth: We

always tried to taste a delicacy in each country, Vienna’s schnitzel is amazing and we also discovered giant pizzas. They were everywhere and so delicious after a day of sight-seeing.

18

Experience Budapest

Taste the culinary delights in Italy

Page 19: University Work - Group Magazine

What did you find essential to take?

Jodie: There are a few essentials, a travel towel and a pillow, both lightweight and easy to pack or strap to your bag. Also ‘the bible’, aka the travel guide which came in useful everywhere we went.

Beth: Make sure you take a small zip up satchel bag to carry around your passport, money and other valuables. Sun cream is a must as being out seeing the cities, most of the time you will not have any other protection. Always print of details of each hotel or hostel you are staying at as trains can be delayed. Finally, always have your currency in small denominations as locals rarely have change.

How did you plan your accommodation? Did you book in advance or just turn up?

Jodie: Generally we booked the night before we left for that city, or we went to an internet café once we were in the country. Internet café’s

were where we booked all our accommodation on hostel bookers or booking.com.

Beth: As I said before we like to be organised so booked our hostels in advance. Hostel World is one of the best but always try www.lastminute.com; you can find

good bargains on hotels. It is possible to just turn up as hotels are easy to find but do not listen to the people at the train station offering a hostel as they cannot always be trusted.

How much money did you take?

Jodie: I did not take much. I had about 400 Euros in cash, and then I used my card. The currency changed so often that it was easier for us to get money out or use card when we were there.

Beth: I took a similar amount, around £400 as our accommodation was already paid for. This was quite a small budget and I would advise taking more.

Overall how much did the trip cost you each?

Beth: In total the flights, accommodation and the InterRail ticket itself cost £470. Then of course I had spending money on top of that.

Jodie: I spent more than I would have liked to, however we did everything we wanted to so I do not have any regrets. We spent just over £2000 between us. Southern Europe is fairly expensive so make sure you take that into account.

Best places to go: London

“If you visit Sumner Street in London then you will see a man standing on an 8ft plinth in a black suit and holding a paint brush. The cameras that are embedded within his torso allow him to mirror your hand and arm moments and will keep you amused for hours. As London’s only moving statue, it is a must see on your visit. The first time I saw this statue it was great, I had no idea how he was doing it,” Ben says.

The statue that copies you

“Located in Piccadilly, The Ritz has fresh cut sandwiches with a range of fillings, including the best ones: Smoked Salmon, cheddar cheese and egg mayonnaise, my favourite. Afternoon tea cakes, pastries and apple and raison scones all served on three tier stand for you to enjoy. My mum and I visit here when she is down to stay with me. It’s a lovely place to go for the whole family on a special occasion too,” says Ben. The dress code is smart and no jeans are permitted, and a jacket must be worn by all men.

Ben Kennedy, 26, a local to the city told us all about the best places to visit in London. He has chosen the best quirky places and there is something for everyone, so relax and enjoy!

“The bar is located in Soho. It is the oldest jazz club in the world and was first opened in 1959. It has seen some legendary jazz names walk through its doors, and says there are more to come – the main reason I keep going back, I am determined to catch a glimpse of someone there. It officially re-opened after refurbishment in June 2006. It is open seven days a week, so there is no excuse not to book tickets to one of the many incredible gigs available for you to see, believe me. My friends and I love it there and regularly spend our nights just listening to the great music on offer for you to hear,” he says.

Living the dream?

27

Page 28: University Work - Group Magazine

A wedding on the beach might be your distant dream, but for Kaylea and Nick White, it became their reality.

Over the last few years Skiathos has become a second home for the couple, so they decided to marry there on 24th June 2011.

“I have always dreamt of marrying abroad,” says Kaylea, a 26-year-old Support Worker from Hove. “I was never fussy about flowers or table layouts, I just wanted it to be perfect for me and Nick.”

Their first holiday together was to Skiathos, a Greek island, in August 2005, and their wedding was the sixth time Kaylea and Nick visited the beautiful island. With the help of friends they have made in Skiathos over the years, along with Anastasia, their wedding planner based in Greece, the whole trip was stress-free.

“My only worry was getting my dress over there, but it turned out fine

because the captain took it into his cabin and hung it up for the entire flight,” says Kaylea.

The pair were joined by 38 close friends and family members, and although a few older family members couldn’t travel due to the flight, the day was perfect for everyone who were able to go.

“It’s a much more relaxed approach to getting married,” says Nick, a 27-year-old Customer Service Advisor at the Post Office. “When you get married on a beach there is much less stress compared to having to plan things to a structure, like a specific wedding time, the numbers, and the other finer details. In Greece we were just so relaxed.”

Skiathos isn’t the only special place for Kaylea and Nick either.

“I proposed in a picturesque park in Rome,” explains Nick. I planned it at a time that the park would be really quiet and serene. I got down on one

knee on some stone steps with the sun shining, with just the two of us there.”

It would seem that together, Kaylea and Nick have had the perfect journey. Whilst in Skiathos for the wedding, they were out there with their guests for a week of sunshine and relaxation. As they are so familiar with the island, they spent most of the week showing their friends and family around the place that they love so much.

“We hired cars and travelled around to all of the beaches on the island,” says Kaylea. “We went to restaurants and bars in large groups and we were always welcome wherever we went.”

Over the years, Kaylea has spent a lot of time raising money for the Skiathos Dog Shelter, which they visit every time they holiday there.

“Before going for the wedding, we worked with some friends to raise 940 euros for the shelter, and went to

28

walk the dogs nearly every day that we were over there,” she explains.

Whenever the couple remember back to their wedding, they get the same fantastic feelings that they had on their special day.

“My wedding was off the scale, not in my wildest dreams did I ever think it would be so close to perfect,” says Kaylea. “I would recommend getting married abroad to anyone. It was so special because of our love for the country. I fell in love with Nick all over again on Vromlimnos beach.”

Whilst you might be thinking that it sounds perfect but it must be expensive, Kaylea and Nick found the opposite when it came to planning the details, because everything was included in the price.

“I’ve been told before that an average church wedding in England costs around £15,000,” says Kaylea. “Getting married abroad was an absolute bargain. We paid €1000

(around £825) to host the reception for 40 people. That included a 5-course meal for everyone, wine on every table, champagne arrival, the wedding cake and the table decorations.

“There were extra fees on top of that for my dress, of course, bridesmaids dresses, flowers, and transport. The whole wedding cost around £4000, and then we had a party with all of our friends and family when we got back to England, which cost around another £800.”

It took them a year and a half to plan the whole wedding.

The ceremony was picturesque, with the beach in the background, just behind the newly married couple. Nick and Kaylea could hear the peaceful sounds of the beach and the clear blue sea as they said their vows, and promised themselves that they would visit the same spot again.

“We’d love to go back at least once

every two or three years if we can,” says Nick.

Until their next trip, they have their wedding photos to remind them of the stunning location.

“I love the photos, they capture the true beauty of Skiathos, but nothing can ever compare to being there. The feeling of the sun on your skin, hearing the waves on the sand and the distant melody of Greek music from the bar,” explains Kaylea.

They’ve just arrived back from their 10-day honeymoon in the Seychelles – the islands that Kaylea has been dreaming of visiting since she was young, but now Skiathos isn’t far behind in her list of dream places.

“It is such a stunning island with such warm, welcoming people. It has the best beaches we’ve ever stepped foot on and we have so many happy memories from our trips there.”

All of their dreams came true in Skiathos. Will yours?

A Fresh Look On...Australia

Australia is one of the most popular places to take a long holiday, but what do the travellers really think of the country?

Heather Tropman, 25, travelled the east coast from Sydney to Mackay with her long-term boyfriend, Joe Middleton, 26. They also went to Melbourne and spent a few days in Adelaide. They were there for seven months, from October 2009-May 2010.

“It’s really beautiful over there and there are so many gorgeous beaches.

For the first three months we’d bought our own car and were staying in a tent at campsites. I’m not a camper at all but it’s really different over there. Campsites are the most popular holiday choice for Australians, so the sites are brilliant.

They have everything from massive pools to kitchens with flat screen televisions to watch while you cook!

In the February we had a mini

holiday to New Zealand, where we hired a campervan. It was much better than having to keep putting the tent up and down every few days so when we got back to Oz we sold the car and hired a campervan for the rest of the trip.

The Philip Island Little Penguin tour was breathtaking. Watching them travel all that way everyday to feed their babies was amazing, and we even walked beside them.

The Great Barrier Reef tour was fantastic too. The water is so clear and you see so many wonderful things, including hundreds of different types of fish, starfish and turtles.

We will definitely be going back to Australia. It’s a huge country and we didn’t even manage to see half of it in the seven months that we were there.”

Heather and Joe

1. The travelling lifestyle. Nothing is done quickly, but when you’re travelling you really don’t care and it just makes the whole experience even better.2. The weather. Most days are spent on the white sandy beaches. Joe did loads of surfing but I didn’t trust the dangerous animals in the sea so I spent that time lying on the beach!3. The animals. We went to a few zoos, so we got to feed kangaroos, cuddle a koala and hold a snake. One morning we woke up with our tent surrounded by kangaroos and their joeys.

Elliott and LauraElliott Bassett, 27, went to the east coast of New South Wales and Queensland with Laura Spear, 26. They went for five weeks, from 17th January-20th February 2012.

“We both loved the weather, it was so hot for the whole trip, and it’s a brilliant lifestyle out there.

There’s loads to do in Australia too. There’s such a choice of things to do and see you’re never short of things to fill your time with.

The beaches are amazing. We went to Whitsunday a few times because the beaches are perfect. We went to Fraser Island for a different day out and the lakes there were some of our favourites too.

We’d recommend Australia to anyone!”

Kelly Thomson, 26, visited Australia with Robert Olsson, 28, in December 2011. They ended up falling in love with the country, and are now living together in Melbourne.

“We spent New Years Eve watching the fireworks in Sydney, which were incredible.

We then travelled up the east coast in a Wicked Campervan, and made a few stops along the way at Port Macquaire, Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay, and ended in the Gold Coast.

The Back Beach at Byron Bay has to be one of our favourite tourist attractions because the sand is warm under your feet, the waves are big and beautiful, and the weather is just perfect.

We stayed mainly in hostels because they were cheap but comfortable.

The weather over there is one thing that attracted us to the country. It’s so much hotter than England. Everyone’s so chilled out and easy going too, and all the architecture in the cities is beautiful.

After seeing some of Australia we decided to live here in Melbourne. If things keep going as well as they are I am going to get a De Facto Visa so I can stay here perminantly.”

Always go to your GP and check if you need any jabs before you leave. For Europe, Australia and

North America you may not need any but Asia, Africa

and South America may be areas

that are of concern.

It’s definitely better to be safe than sorry on holiday.

Safety Abroad

Take any tablets that could be necessary as well as sun cream, after sun and mosquito spray. Sunburn and bites can have a far worse effect that just being uncomfortable so make sure you always put a fair amount on.

Pack sensible clothing. Think about where you are going and what will you be doing. A bikini is fine by the pool but you won’t be happy traipsing through the jungle in one. A hat is a holiday essential if you are jetting off to somewhere sunny because the last thing you want to be doing is spending your trip in bed with sun stroke. Avoid tap water

in places where you are not sure about the sanitation of the area. Bottled water is far from expensive and could save you from having an upset stomach.

Always make sure you have a map if you are out exploring. Even if you feel you know the area well it may come of use if you want to go off trail.

My name is Sharon and I am interested in booking a one week holiday to Corfu, Greece for my husband and two children. I was hoping to find something cheap and cheerful, all inclusive in Mid-September time. I would like to stay at a hotel, but would need to be child friendly. Also, if possible we would like to be close to a town and a beach to visit on our stay as well. Can you help me at all? Thanks,

Question from a reader

Hi Sharon,

The Home and Away team

Hi,

Sharon

There are lots of opportunities for you to go away in Mid-September. I have done a quick search for you and here is what I found, Please bare in mind that the prices are only an estimate, so don’t be surprised if they are slightly more, or less when you come to booking your holiday. You can depart from London, Gatwick airport on the 17th September, to Corfu, Greece for one week. The Corfu Panorama Resort is free for this date too. You can get this deal, all inclusive for your family for roughly £1452. The room is a family room and includes a balcony. The hotel itself is set on a hillside, overlooking the beautiful sandy beach of Sidari, so you’re guaranteed gorgeous views on your stay as well. In terms of children’s activities and entertainment, there is a miniature playground and splash pool. There are also daytime animation activities for both adults and the children. Basketball and tennis courts are also available to use on your stay. There is also your usual night time entertainment which I am sure your children will love. The town of Sidari is very close, so you might also want to enjoy a stroll around the town to see how the people live, enjoy a bit of shopping or enjoy a dinner out which is also reasonably priced. For more information please visit: www.thomascook.com and www.tripadvisor.com I hope you enjoy your holiday.
