Christian Brothers formally presented
its Letters of Affiliation to DLSU Board
of Trustees Chair Jose Trinidad Pardo
during the Eucharistic Celebration at the
Most Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
The AFSC honor is granted to members
of the Lasallian Family who have
helped the Institute through their deep
involvement in the Lasallian Mission and
who have grown in appreciation of the
Lasallian spirituality.
Upon the request and recommendation
by the De La Salle Brothers, Sector of
Philippines and the Lasallian East Asia
District, the Superior General, Br. Robert
Schieter FSC, approved the request.
Pardo has supported the Lasallian
Mission and the work of the Institute in
the Philippines for several decades. He
took his Lasallian education, from his
primary years to his graduate degree in
MBA, at the University, then known as
De La Salle College.
He is a member of the International
Board of Counselors for the Institute.
His work in the private and the public
sector and the numerous awards given
to him are expressions of his Lasallian
perspective and values.
DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY RECENTLY HOSTED a dinner for the
largest gathering of the Lasallian East Asia District (LEAD), which is
the governance structure of the De La Salle Brothers in the region.
LEAD is composed of seven sectors, namely, Hong Kong, Japan,
Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
The 2nd District Assembly was held at Microtel in the SM Mall
of Asia Complex, with 136 participants that included Brothers,
scholastics, postulants and La Salle Sisters. The conference aimed
to realign the participants with the directions of the 45th General
Assembly, which was also held early this year.
By inspiring strength through diversity, the 2nd District Assembly
also sought to inspire new and better ways to better fulfill the
Lasallian mission of providing a human and Lasallian education to
the young, especially the poor and those at risk.

The team of Dr. Elmer Dadios of
Manufacturing Engineering and
Management (MEM), Dr. Alvin Culaba and
Dr. Laurence Gan Lim of the Mechanical
Engineering, Edwin Sybingco, Rhay
Rhay Vicerra, and Argel Bandala of
the Electronics and Communications
Engineering (ECE) designed and developed
an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV).
In their research, they proposed a fuzzy
logic-based controller to allow the
UUV to navigate autonomously while
avoiding obstacles. The said controller
is implemented in an actual low-cost
underwater vehicle equipped with
magnetometer and ultrasonic sensors.
Meanwhile, Dadios and Gan Lim also
took part in the research entitled “Use
of Computer Vision to Control the Water
Quality of Tiger Prawn Aquaculture Based
on Its Behavioral Patterns.” They worked
with Dr. Edwin Calilung of MEM and Reggie
Gustilo of ECE.
This study used a computer vision to
observe the behavior of tiger prawns by
varying water condition parameters such
as temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved
oxygen. It compares the performance of
using computer vision as against using
sensors and microcontroller units to correct
or adjust the state of these parameters.

AS PART OF THE CONTINUING COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT of
DLSU’s Manufacturing Engineering and Management (MEM) and
the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, a group of students
designed and developed seven transforming beds for Hospicio
De San Jose in Quiapo, Manila.
The transforming beds seek to maximize the limited space in the
145-year old orphanage, which currently houses children and old
people, as well as persons with special needs.
The MEM students from I.D. 111 who made the beds their
project in LBYMREE (Welding Class) are Cris Villanueva, Kean
Peralta, Dominic Caoile, Rex Ong, and Julius Doolittle. They
worked under the supervision of MEM faculty member Siegfried
Lopez.
Supporting the students were the Office of the Vice Chancellor
for Lasallian Mission under Br. Michael Broughton FSC and the
Office of the Associate Vice President for Facilities Management
under Engineer Ronaldo Gallardo.
The donation was the second set made by the MEM Department
for Hospicio De San Jose. The first set of four beds was turned
over to the orphanage in 2012.
Sister Ma. Magdalena G. Erasmo of the Pastoral Care and
Homelife Services of Hospicio De San Jose received the
transforming beds last November 14.
THE DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY PUBLISHING HOUSE RELEASES
a groundbreaking series, Critics in Conversation, which
features candid revelations from some of the world’s foremost
literary critics and practitioners.
The series highlights correspondences between Swansea
University Professor Catherine Belsey and literary critic David
Jonathan Bayot, who is also the executive director of the
DLSU Publishing House. He also worked with critic, theorist,
and former Johns Hopkins University Visiting Professor
Jonathan Dollimore for the series. Another book in the series
features renowned American poet Kenneth Goldsmith with the
late poet and DLSU professor Francisco Roman Guevara.
The books aim to make the field of literary studies, cultural
criticism, and critical theory accessible to more readers.
DLSU OIC PRESIDENT AND CHANCELLOR BR. DENNIS MAGBANUA FSC LED
the opening of the University’s annual Christmas celebrations with the lighting of the
Animo Christmas! Tree last December 1 on the Henry Sy, Sr. Hall grounds, with a
similar activity concurrently held at the DLSU Science and Technology Complex.
In his message to the community, Br. Dennis mentioned that the tree-lighting activity,
which started last year, has become a symbol of hope. “It took a special meaning last
year in the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda. Tonight, we are continuing this tree-lighting
tradition to celebrate the gifts of this season,” he said.
He noted the importance not only of gratitude and of celebrating with loved ones but
also of developing the spirit of volunteerism, not only during Christmas season but
also throughout the year.
An institutional Advent Mass was also held during the day and an acoustic concert
organized by the University Student Government featuring the Culture and Arts Office
groups and other performers followed the lighting ceremony.
IN THE NOVEMBER 2014 licensure
examinations for Chemical Engineers,
two De La Salle University graduates
made it to the Top 10 list of examinees.
John Frederick Dacula Tapia, a St. La
Salle Scholar, placed 5th, while Nikko
Mabasa Barongan, initially a St. La Salle
Scholar and later, a Rebisco Foundation
Scholar, placed 10th among 871
examinees.
DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY HOSTED the 2014 PEN Conference, which
centered on the theme “Writing, Writers, Moral Regeneration and
National Renewal,” held last December 2-3 at the Multipurpose Hall
of the Henry Sy, Sr. Hall.
The Philippine Center of International PEN (Poets, Playwrights,
Essayists, Novelists) commemorated the 150th birth anniversary of
Apolinario Mabini and featured former Associate Justice and current
Commissioner of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Adolf
Azcuna.
Azcuna delivered the José Rizal Lecture, which was the highlight of
the conference. Intramuros Administrator Bambi Harper served as
the keynote speaker.
Other panellists/speakers included Rene Azurin, Joel Pablo Salud,
Raissa Robles, Floy Quintos, Dennis Marasigan, Clodualdo Del
Mundo Jr., Gemma Cruz Araneta, Saul Hofileña Jr., Bernardita
Churchill, Carlo Vergara, and Edgar Samar, among others.
The conference was co-sponsored by DLSU Bienvenido N. Santos
Creative Writing Center, DLSU Office of the Vice Chancellor for
Research and Innovation, University of Santo Tomas The Varsitarian,
University of the Philippines, Atty. Saul Hofileña, and Solidaridad
Bookstore, among others.
THE LASALLIAN COMMUNITY CELEBRATED the 75th year jubilee of
the Chapel of the Most Blessed Sacrament, located at the second
floor of the St. La Salle Hall, last December 2, with a mass presided
by a La Salle alumnus, Rev. Fr. Benildus Maramba, OSB.
The Chapel became a refuge for the Christian Brothers, priest, and
families who sought shelter in its hallowed halls during the darkest
days of the Second World War.
Vice Chancellor for Lasallian Mission Br. Michael Broughton FSC
noted how the Chapel has become a place of sanctuary for the
faithful and a symbol of the joint aspirations of the members of the
Lasallian community. It is the center and the heart of the shared
commitment of Lasallians to serve God and follow his will through
faith, service, and communion.
Br. Michael shared a brief history of the Chapel, mentioning among
others, its consecration as well as the reconciliation, rededication,
and the reparation ceremonies held there after the war.
