SGC Faculty & Staff News
Four University System of Georgia colleges and universities that will result
from the consolidation of eight existing institutions are one step further on the road to
reality. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
(SACS) gave its approval to plans to create Georgia Regents University, Middle
Georgia State College, South Georgia State College and the University of North
Georgia.
Officials from SACS, the Southeast’s accrediting organization for higher
education, announced the approval of the prospectuses submitted by the four
institutions during the SACS annual meeting held in Dallas. This represents the final
step needed for the Board of Regents to grant its authorization for the institutions to
begin to operate and to appoint presidents. This action is scheduled for the January 8
Board of Regents meeting.
“Many individuals have worked countless hours to bring us to this point in our
consolidation effort,” said University System Chancellor Hank Huckaby. “At the
outset, our goal with consolidation was to broaden opportunity for more students and
to do so more efficiently. The approval by SACS of our plan represents a tremendous
milestone and validates the hard work of the past year.”
Dr. Virginia M. Carson, president of soon-to-be South Georgia State College
pending Board of Regents approval, stated, “Our faculty and staff have worked very
hard to accomplish this goal, and I believe we are now well-positioned to be a more
viable and effective institution to serve the students of our region going forward.”

How can it be that we are already saying goodbye to another year? For so many
reasons 2012 will be a pivotal year, and one neither I nor our College will ever
forget. We started with the news of our consolidation with Waycross College. No
one could predict the volume of work and the depth of time and energy that would
come with the announcement early last January. I am very proud of the hard work
and dedication our faculty and staff have shown throughout this very challenging
process. You each make us a better and more viable institution and ready to begin
the next chapter as SGSC on January 8, 2013.
So many other great milestones and successes also come to mind. From the
inaugural athletic hall of fame event to the Engram Hall renovation to welcoming
our first ever junior class to the affirmative level change visit and prospectus
approval by SACS COC, 2012 has been a marquee year!
I am humbled to serve this institution and look forward to working with each of
you to carry out our new mission and charge for the students we serve. So I extend
my very sincere wish for you and your family to enjoy a holiday filled with love and
laughter and a new year filled with peace and happiness.
Regards,
Virginia
SACS Report for BSN Program The SACS Commission on Colleges (COC) Committee visited the SGC campus
in November. SGC received the report that there are NO RECOMMENDATIONS
in their review of the compliance with SACS Principles in light of the SACS COC
Board of Trustees approval in December 2011 of the SGC move from Level I
(associate) to Level II (bachelor). This favorable committee report will be
forwarded to the SACS COC Board for its June 2013 agenda.
Dr. Virginia Carson says, “This is a great testament to the work of so very many
people at SGC over the last 18 months and the commitment you have to the
quality of our student learning. I am so very proud of you and the college. Thank
you for all that you do.”

SGC Receives 2012 Sustainability Award
South Georgia College received the 2012 Sustainability Award for Historic Preservation for Engram Hall from the University System of Georgia at the 16th annual Facilities Officers Conference. Since the ribbon cutting in June, literally thousands of people have been in Engram - new and returning students, parents, faculty, staff, and
community visitors. This building has quickly established itself as the welcoming station it was intended to be. It is a very efficient one-stop shop for enrollment management, provides an excellent home for the bookstore, and is already a landmark on the campus.

Strickland Receives MSN Degree
Ms. Kasey Strickland, instructor of nursing at South Georgia College,
successfully defended her thesis at Valdosta State University to obtain her
Master of Science in Nursing degree. The topic, Manipulation of Nursing
Faculty by Nursing Students, based on Bandura's (1977) Social Learning
Theory, examined the idea that just because a nursing student observes a
behavior does not mean they should adopt it and use it for their own
practice. According to Strickland, respondents with master’s degrees were
more likely to experience students making boundary violations, doing
favors for faculty members or other students and students offering or
appearing to offer rewards for favors, while those with doctorates were
more likely to be uncertain about the outcome of the manipulation, or to
have students attempt manipulation in a public place, such as the halls or
offices. This means that the higher the education level, but not necessarily
having taught many years, the more likely the nursing instructor was to see
boundary violations because students preparing for higher education have already established working
or home routines and the student may feel that faculty requests are too demanding. Also, boundary
violation could be the instructor is younger with a higher degree and the student is a young traditional
student straight out of high school and has not had the experience of boundaries. Strickland was assisted
by Drs. Anita Hufft, Maria Whyte, and Larry Hilgert.
Ms. Bobby Jean Musgrove will share Season of Change: Implementing
D2L in an ASN programs, at a podium presentation at Valdosta State
University in February. The nursing faculty utilize GaView in 100 percent
of courses and have started training for the transition to Desire2Learn
(D2L). D2L is a course management system used as a way to create a
course web site. A D2L course site allows "anytime, anywhere" access to
syllabi, readings, multi-media files, electronic dropboxes, online quizzes,
email, grading, student progress reports, and project files. The migration
of Fall 2012 GeorgiaVIEW Vista courses to Spring 2013 GeorgiaVIEW
D2L will begin December 10, 2012.

The cross country team enjoyed a successful trip to the national meet in Ina, Illinois, as a conclusion to the 2012 season. In
the men’s race, there were 46 teams represented. The South Georgia College team finished 32nd, with Richard Smith

Evans (30:14), Pedro Martinez (31:12), Juan Castanon (31:29) and Jose Castanon (33:22). The men’s average time was
30:09, the third-fastest of the year. Charley Harrison, who won the women’s conference championship, also ran. She
finished in 21:57.
This caps a record-setting season for SGC cross country. Eight of the top 10 men’s times are held by runners from the
2012 team. Charley Harrison added six times to the women’s record book. All told, seven of the 10 women’s times are
held by members of this year’s team.

On Jan. 8, 2013, South Georgia College and Waycross College will officially consolidate into South Georgia
State College, pending approval by the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents. On this important date, the
southeast Georgia region will welcome a new multi-campus, student-centered institution offering a variety of degree
programs into its educational community.
As South Georgia College and Waycross College complete the final stages in the consolidation process, both
institutions are taking careful steps to ensure that current and prospective students receive the best customer service
possible. Consistency and continuity between each campus is at the heart of a smooth transition during this historic
process. One such action involves aligning the working hours on each campus so that both the Douglas and Waycross
sites are open for business at the same times each day of the week.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2013, the hours of operation on the Waycross and Douglas campuses will be Monday through
Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Classes for spring semester 2013 will begin on Jan. 3,
2013, on the Douglas campus and Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, on the Waycross campus.
“Our students are our top priority for the consolidated institution. By aligning working hours at both campuses,
we can provide additional service opportunities for students. In addition, it will mold two institutions into one and allows
for teamwork and more efficiencies between the Douglas and Waycross locations,” says Dr. Virginia Carson, who will
serve as president of South Georgia State College.
