Foreword Concordia parvae res crescunt, discordia et maximae dilabuntur!

(Unity makes the small things grow and disunity causes even the greatest to decline!)

This document is the first Annual Report of the Faculty of Agriculture, Zagreb University. We have undertaken to present our activities for our work to be evaluated by the general public. We would appreciate to be recognized as diligent people, ready to answer the challenges of public service, whose achievements are not adequately appreciated by the general public. The extent and high level of scientific capacities in the field of agriculture required for our work is only understood by our peers. We are fully aware that the advancement and improvement of both scientific work and the teaching process and their organization is imperative, and we are willing to exercise our best efforts in the pursuit of the desired quality. We strive to contribute to the quality of living of Croatian citizens by introducing concepts of business-orientation and economic benefit into the agricultural sector, by improving both individual and public health and the welfare of the Croatian population through cost-effective production based on environmental protection and ecosystem conservation principles, and by providing for the "farm-to-table" quality chain in response to the ever increasing demand of the general public for safer and more recognizable locally produced food. We would like to use this opportunity and extend our gratitude and appreciation to all our collaborators, our employees, who are frequently not adequately recognized as the backbone of the Faculty activities, although their contribution to the results achieved by the Faculty is enormous. We would also like to thank the business sector that relies on our results, gives us its support and recognizes the value of our work. The future will confirm what our role was, what it is and what it will be! Unity rules here!

Professor Jasmina Havranek, PhD, Dean

Editorial The Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture (FAZ), University of Zagreb initiated preparation of the FAZ Annual Report (Report) for the period June 1, 2001 through May 31, 2002. The Report was presented to the FAZ employees at the DAY OF THE FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE, on September 26, 2002. During the 9th Faculty Council (FC) session, the FC members were informed about this activity, and the department heads were requested to submit their contributions to the Report.

The FAZ Dean appointed Professor Tito Žimbrek, PhD, Vice Dean for Scientific Affairs, the editor-in-chief of the Report. Professor Žimbrek prepared the Report framework and proposed the members of the Editorial Board, including: Professor Jasmina Havranek, PhD, Dean, Professor Vesna Pavić, PhD, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Professor Ivan Pejić, PhD, International Relations Office Head, and Assistant Professor Vjekoslav Par, PhD, Department of Farm Management Head. Davor Bevanda was appointed the Technical Editor, Ramona Franić, PhD, Secretary, Jadranka Žimbrek Typist, Martina Đurinski, BSc and Librarian Proofreader, and Nada Čičmak, BA Language Editor. The cover page design was prepared by Dragan Tupajić.

The Report framework presenting its draft contents was discussed, determined and approved by the Editorial Board. The Report consists of ten sections and attachments, and individual authors and collaborators were entrusted with their preparation.

We believe that the Report will be a useful document both for the FAZ management and for its staff, as a reminder of what has been done and as a milestone for the tasks to be fulfilled in order for our institution to readily and adequately establish and confirm its position and role in the society and respond to the educational challenges the agricultural and related sciences are facing in the Republic of Croatia.

Founding and Organization

Boards and Committees The FC nominates boards and committees as its bodies, pursuant to the stipulations of the Articles and its decisions. For the term 2001-2002 to 2002-03, the FC nominated 12 boards and 17 committees; the Board for Finances and Investment has its 6 committees. The FAZ FC boards and committees are mainly composed of the Faculty staff, with an adequate number of collaborators and students. Thus 12 boards and 17 committees have 135 and 110 members, respectively, including the members of the Board for Finances and Investment committees (20). Thus, some staff members are sitting on more than one board or committee. The boards, committees and other bodies (as specified in the attachment) comprise 118 persons, mostly teaching staff, instructors, junior researchers, technical staff, heads of administrative services and students.

While the boards are selected for a term, similary to the FC, the committees are as a rule selected to resolve specific problems. Further, the FC confirms other bodies and offices, such as the Editorial Board of the Agricultural Scientific Review (ACS), Court of Honor, Faculty Tribunal and the Tribunal Factfinder, class mentor teachers and others (as enlisted in the attachment). Based on the FC Decision of February 12, 2001, the International Relations Office (IRO) was founded. The first Office Head was Professor Ferdo Bašić, PhD. During the reporting period, Professor Ivan Pejić, PhD has been appointed new Office Head (IRO is described in more detail below).

Internal Organization The in-house FAZ organization is based on the departments. The FAZ has 28 departments. The departments are in charge of cost-efficient use of material, financial and other resources put at their disposal, they propose the measures for improvement of the material, financial and human resource capacities, and perform teaching, scientific and highly specialized activities. A department is managed by a department head appointed, along with the deputy head, by the FC based on a proposal submitted by the department. During the reporting period, and based on the proposals from the departments, the department heads and their deputies were selected for the next two-year term.

Faculty Staff As of May 31, 2002 the FAZ staff totals 348 employees in the Administration and 28 departments. Ninety-two are professors, i.e. 29 full professors (19 tenures and 9 first appointments, and one professor emeritus). Eleven professors are associate staff, and the number of assistant professors is 52.

With 55 teaching associates, the total number of professors and associates is 147, i.e. 42.2 % of the entire staff.

When the professors and teaching associates are added the senior instructors, one lecturer and one instructor, the FAZ teaching staff with doctoral degrees makes total of 105.

It is obvious that the share of repeating students, 45.6% on average (41% during the 1st year, to as much as 56.3% in the 2nd year), is significant. It should be noted that a number of the students repeating the first two years is larger among those paying their fees than among those funded by the MST. The fact that 73.3% second-year students paying for their education is repeating the year is surprising, and this might be attributed to the selection through the entrance exam, because of which the more successful applicants are funded by the MST, but once they fail a year they lose their support. One of the reasons for which the years are repeated might also be inadequate high-school education in some areas (biology, chemistry, mathematics), although it would be best to conduct a specific research into the reasons for such situation. The obtained data could be used as the background information in the future academic reform of the FAZ.

The largest number of the repeating first-year students (academic year 2001-2002) has been recorded at the Animal Science (46.5%) major, and the largest number of the second-year repeating students is that recorded at the Landscaping (68.8%). In the third year, the lowest number of repeating students is that in the AEN program (25.0%) and Landscaping (26.9%), and the largest in the LMSP program (75.0%) and AH program (68.0%).

Educational Activities

Field Trips Since the field trips involve as a rule some twenty students, the students and teachers usually travel by coach. The number of students embarking on a field trip depends on a study year. During the first year, the coaches are usually full, while the number of students from the later years is usually smaller. During the last three academic years the coach was used for 89 days on average, considerably more during the summer semester (62 days or 70%), which is only normal considering the more favorable climate conditions and the fact that the most of the field classes are held outdoors. The field trips are not organized during the summer vacations and examination periods. The field trips are most frequent during Mays (23 days on average) and Aprils (18 days on average).

The field trips of the Plant Science major are mostly organized to the areas with rich and diverse flora, to the farms of larger field crop and vegetable producers, orchards, vineyards and wine cellars. The Animal Science students mostly tour animal farms (Vukovar, Donja Stubica, Dubravica, Križevci, Čakovec, Sveti Ivan Žabno), fish farms (Ogulin, Draganić, Žumberak, Donji Miholjac) and producing facilities (Vrbovec, Koka, Podravka Agri-businesses). The Landscaping students tour national parks and nature parks. In summer 2002 semester, the fourth-year Landscaping students went on two field trips abroad - to Germany and France in order to visit the historical buildings and examples of modern outdoor landscape engineering.

Undergraduate Studies Taught by the FAZ Staff on Other Universities Besides their work at the FAZ, the FAZ staff is involved in teaching at other colleges and universities in Croatia and abroad. This share of their workload amounts to approximately 30%.

During the reporting period, 24 lecturers taught at other universities, wherefrom almost half (11) abroad, at the University of Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina).

Postgraduate Studies The FAZ organizes and conducts seven four-semester postgraduate studies. These are: Plant Science, Animal Science, Fishery, Phytomedicine, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Economics and Agro-ecology. Total number of postgraduate students during the reporting period was 94.

During the reporting period, 23 students finished their postgraduate studies, namely they defended 23 master's theses from different scientific disciplines. Out of total number of postgraduate students who successfully defended their master's theses, 14 graduated from the FAZ, three from the College of Agriculture of the University of Osijek, and one from each of the following: College of Metallurgy in Zenica (Bosnia and Herzegovina), College of Agriculture of the University of Mostar (AFM) (Bosnia and Herzegovina), College of Science of the University of Zagreb, College of Agriculture of the University of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), College of Agriculture of the University of Maribor (Slovenia), Naval College of the University of Split. The commission for evaluation and defending of the theses had three members, and the tutors were lecturers-researchers from the FAZ. Nine of the total number of the masters of sciences are on the FAZ staff.

Preparations for Introduction of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) at the FAZ The FAZ FC set up the ECTS Committee on October 8, 2001.

The Committee organized a number of meetings to discuss the issues related to introduction of the ECTS at the FAZ.

The Committee results were presented during the FC session of December 4, 2001 that was completely dedicated to the ECTS. At this meeting, the FC brought a decision on introduction of the ECTS, and the action plan for the FAZ.

The ECTS-related activities have recently gone weary in expectation of the new Higher Education and Science Act and consideration of the reform of the FAZ curriculum.

Scientific Research and Professional Activities

Scientific Research and Professional Activities The FAZ researchers are performing their scientific activities through research projects that include basic, development and applied research (national or international), and different professional collaborations participated in by the researchers specialized in different fields.

The basic researches and development of new technologies are supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MST), and applied agricultural researches are supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), namely the Agricultural Research Council. Professional collaboration with different parties is based on the collaboration agreements.

Projects Contracted with the Ministry of Science and Technology By the mid-2002, the FAZ researchers conducted 34 scientific research projects supported by the MST and contracted in mid-1996.

A new three-year period (2002-2004) has started in 2002. The FAZ researchers responded to the invitation for application of scientific research projects and programs of continuous research activities with 62 projects. After their review and evaluation most of the projects (57) were approved in May 2002.

A separate group of research projects are the so-called technological projects initiated late in 2001 and early in 2002. Ten of them have been approved so far. These projects were initiated within an official program of the Croatian Government, the Croatian Program for Innovative Technological Development (HITRA). The program is implemented through the MST, and it is aimed at finding quality solutions for new production and products competitive in the demanding international market. New applications are being submitted for the projects from this group of researches.

Projects Contracted with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Currently, 29 two-year researches in the field of agriculture and fisheries, funded by the MAF, namely its Agricultural Research Council are being conducted at the FAZ. These projects were launched late in 2001 (contracted in December 2001). These are concrete short-term researches focused on direct application in agricultural practice, intended especially for family farms.

This is the third research cycle of the kind supported by the MAF (World Bank loan) and initiated mid-1998 within the project Development Farm Support Service Program (FSSP) (The FSSP project was initiated in 1997-98, with the support of the World Bank; at that time the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) was also founded). It should be noted that since 1998, in all three cycles, the FAZ has launched 93 (or 67%) out of 138 research projects of this kind conducted in Croatia and approved and financed by the Agricultural Research Council. It is a significant number and share that speaks of intensive applied research activities evolving at the FAZ. The research results mostly find their direct application in the agricultural practice. The summaries on these projects (name, primary investigators, basic achievements and their application), have been presented in a separate book published by the FAZ.

Scientific Research and Professional Activities

Projects Contracted with National and Regional Administration, Companies and Entrepreneurs Another forms of specialized activities include applied and extension services performed for the national and regional authorities, businesses and other institutions, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders and clients, and they are carried out on the basis of collaboration agreements. This type of research focuses on resolving of different, mainly concrete issues, for which the studies, project documentation, solutions, and reports are prepared, supervision conducted, analyses, surveys and monitoring systems set up, estimates and other forms of professional collaboration delivered.

During the reporting period, 75 collaboration agreements were concluded by individual departments and managed by the FAZ. Some of these are long-term cooperation agreements.

The most prominent activities include participation of a larger number of researchers on preparation of the Croatian Agriculture and Fisheries Strategy, finished in the second half of 2001. The Strategy was put on the agenda of the Croatian Parliament late in April 2002. Currently, the document that will enable implementation of the Strategy, the National Agriculture and Rural Areas Action Plan is in preparation, with T. Žimbrek as its coordinator. The MAF and FAZ collaboration was formally executed on March 8, 2002. Participation of numerous FAZ researchers on a joint study titled Agricultural Development of the Brodsko-Posavska County (coordinator F. Bašić), approved by the client mid-May 2002. should also be mentioned.

Presentation and Dissemination of Research Results The Editorial Board invited the reports on published scientific and technical papers, books, papers from national and international conferences, and other activities, and all the FAZ departments and researchers responded. Thus, for the first time, sufficient information were available to record and publish references of all the FAZ scientists for a (reporting) period. The research results were presented by scientific and technical groups so that they were published in journals, books and proceedings from conferences and symposia, as project documents, during seminars, workshops and the like.

The published papers are divided into those published in scientific (114 papers) and technical (28) journals. As authors and co-authors, the FAZ researchers published 11 books, mostly in the field of viticulture and wine production. A large number of researchers (85) was involved in development of specialized studies for different clients. These specialized activities include development of project documentation, activities performed on the basis of collaboration agreements including consulting, organization of symposia and congresses, workshops, field or culture days, development programs and many others. For example, altogether 31 projects were implemented during the reporting period, eight of them international, including the earlier mentioned ARC-MAF and MST projects. Last but not least, the additional scientific and specialized education of the young researchers, mostly abroad, should be mentioned. Thus, during the reporting period, 39 FAZ researchers visited 23 departments in foreign institutions, and their visits lasted from one week to a year.

The research results were presented in the reports submitted to the institutions funding the research (MAF and MST), but also in national and international symposia and conferences, specialized lectures and workshops, and published in specialized journals, publications, proceedings and books. Quite a large number of works was published in the FAZ journal, the (Agriculturae Conspectus Scientificus, ACS), a

Scientific Research and Professional Activities

FAZ – Annual Report 2001-2002 18

Scientific Professional Activity of the Junior Researchers and Students of Agriculture Both the junior researchers and our students of agriculture were involved in scientific and professional activities.

Junior Researchers Late in May 2002, the FAZ had 43 junior researchers (three doctors of sciences, 14 masters of sciences and 26 graduate engineers), employed on the basis of the MST call for application for scientific and research projects for the period 1991-2002. The greatest number of the junior researchers was employed during the last three years (26), and during the reporting period as much as 11 junior researchers were employed on a number of research projects.

Students The students have been involved in the FAZ scientific and research activities. Thus, they submitted their scientific papers to the University for the President's Award. In 2001, two FAZ students received this award. In 2002, nine scientific papers by 12 students (authors and co-authors) applied for the President's Award. Based on the invitation for a landscape design for the FAZ grounds, ten Landscaping students won the awards for the conceptual design in 2001.

The students were pro-actively involved in the 7th Agronomiade, the agricultural students convention for 2002 with international participation which, in addition to the sports events and artistic shows, offered the stage for presentation of their scientific work. During the 2nd European Landscape Biennial, Barcelona 2001, the designs of seven Landscaping students were exhibited.

Maksimir Experiment Station

Field Production Manager: Prof. Boris Varga, PhD - Department Head

Researchers and technical staff of the Department of Field Crops.

The Experiment Station is composed of the following team of researchers and technical staff: Prof. Zvonimir Štafa PhD; Prof. Zvonko Mustapić PhD; Prof. Boris Varga PhD; Assistant Prof. Ana Pospišil PhD; Assistant Prof. Jasminka Butorac PhD; Assistant Prof. Milan Pospišil PhD; Dubravko Maćešić PhD; Zlatko Svečnjak MSc; Željko Jukić MSc; Darko Uher BSc; Josip Vinter BSc; agricultural technicians Martin Mikić, Ivan Švajka, Denis Jurić, Snježana Župan, and farmworkers Ivica Luketić and Miroslav Knežević.

Station Area

The Experiment Station consists of:

- 7.5 ha of fenced land, divided into three units on which the field trials with corn, wheat and similar cultures and soybean alternate. In addition to this part of the Experiment Station, the Department researchers use:

- about 1.5 ha of partly fenced area (currently unfenced because of the construction activities on the Forestry College building) used for trials with sugar and stock beet, rape, small grains, corn, soybean, amaranth, flax, some forage crops including alfalfa, crimson clover, vetch, winter pea, sorghum, legume/cereal mixtures etc. Additionally,

- when necessary, the researchers use 1-1.5 ha of land on a part of the Experiment Station upstream the confluence of the Bliznec and Štefanovec Brooks. The number of plants cultivated at this part of the Experiment Station is limited because of the restricted access. Since the entire Experiment Station is located on the alluvium, large quantities of gravel (often reaching the ground surface) encountered on approximately 1/3 of the surface area prevents quality research.

Equipment

The Department invested much effort and funds into collecting the equipment necessary to conduct the field trials. Thus, for tillage two modern tractors are used (John Deere, 84 HP and Fendt, 60 HP) and the attachable implements such as plow, disk harrow, harrow, cultivator, land plane and the like. In addition to this equipment, the most frequently used pieces of machinery are a sowing machine (four-row) for corn and soybean and combine for collecting of corn grains, while the sowing machine and combine for stubble cereals (for small plots) are shared with the Department of Plant Breeding, Genetics, Biometrics and Experimentation. Additionally, the researchers are using numerous pieces of machinery usually collectively referred to as small machinery (cultivators, spraying machines, mowing machines and the like).

The laboratory premises accommodate equipment for drying and shredding of plant material, grain counter, scale and other pieces of small laboratory equipment necessary for preparation of the material for further analyses.

Seed Production Manager: Prof. Ivan Kolak, PhD – Department Head

Researchers and technical staff of the Department of Seed Science and Technology.

The Experiment Station is composed of the following team of researchers and collaborators: Prof. Ivan Kolak PhD; Assistant Prof. Zlatko Šatović PhD; Hrvoje Rukavina MSc; Boris Župan agricultural technician; Maja Župan agricultural technician and Dragica Matašić farmworker.

The external collaborators working on our field and projects are: Assistant Prof. Ines Vršek PhD; Vesna Židovec PhD; Ksenija Karlović MSc - all from the Department of Ornamental Plants, Landscape Architecture and Garden Art; Toni Safner BSc, Department of Plant Breeding, Genetics, Biometrics and Experimentation; Zlatko Liber PhD, Faculty of Science, Department of Botany.

Station Area

The Experiment Station consists of:

- 1.5 ha of fenced land divided into three fields (legumes, cereals and other crops); - 0.5 ha of land from the fenced land to the brook. This 0.5 ha should be barbed for the living collection

of agricultural crops used in teaching. The field collection is subdivided into plots for all species of field and vegetable crops, medicinal, aromatic and honey plants, where the students learn about the seeds and planting material and commercial cultivars. (Only a fenced plot is protection against theft and devastation of the sawn species);

- 0.5 ha by the bee hive (apiary) is a fenced land for medicinal, aromatic and honey plants, annual and multiannual species and trials with these species, cultivars, populations and the like. The area is used for the MAF-ARC project Production of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants and the MST projects Croatian Bank of Plant Genes (HBBG) and Genetic Variability of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants - accessions maintenance and trials. The area is fitted with a drip irrigation system;

- 2.0 ha of unfenced land in the field, across the road and opposite the bee hive. This area is used for students' exercises on sustainable selection and reproduction methods used on self-pollinated and cross-pollinated species. The area is rather nonhomogenous (alluvium and gravel up to the ground surface) so it should be improved, ie. the nearby excavation should be backfilled and the entire surface leveled up to 30-40 cm. This would make it an adequate area for the activities related to the field crops and seed production.

Existing Equipment

The Department has lab equipment for cleaning, calibration, protection and packing of smaller or larger seed specimens. These means have been obtained for the HBBG Project, along with the seed and planting material cold store operating at 0-5°C (so called short-tem storing up to 20 years). The Department is also in possession of the PCR unit (termocypler) and the electrophoresis unit, currently kept at the Faculty of Science, Department of Botany because of the lack of space at the Department.

Necessary Equipment

The laboratory experiments (exercises) demand that the Jacobsen seed quality tester, type 5301 (EUR 14,760), a vacuum seed counter, type 5801 (EUR 1,480), seed dryer (EUR 7,000), DNA laboratory equipment for seed and planting material (EUR 16,375), complete machinery for preparation of soil,

Jazbina Experiment Station

Viticulture and Enology Experiment Station Manager: Associate Prof. Nikola Mirošević, PhD - Department Head

Researchers and technical staff of the Department of Viticulture and Enology.

The Experiment Station is composed of several teams of researchers and technical staff of the Department of Viticulture and Enology. Because of the scope and importance of the research conducted at the Experiment Station, the staff of the Department of Microbiology and Department of Plant Breeding, Genetics, Biometrics and Experimentation is also involved on the teams, along with the researchers of the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb.

Station Area The Experiment Station has about 6.5 ha of vineyards with a number of different grapevine cultivars and 0.5 ha of rootstock mother vine collection.

The Experiment Station also encompasses the buildings and farm structures that accommodate offices and laboratories, library, lecture room, small or experimental cellar, large or main cellar, premises for vinification, winematuration, stabilization and bottling of wine, cooled bottle storage, and machinery and equipment shed with a workshop.

Equipment Performance of numerous and often various research activities asks for different equipment gradually procured by the Department of Viticulture (now Department of Viticulture and Enology) which invested enormous effort and sacrifice, with the support of the AFZ. For maintenance of the vineyards and implementation of viticultural technical and technological research two tractors (FIAT New Holland) are used with their attachable implements, which suite the modern concept of viticultural production under the given conditions. Equipment for winemaking - both in the small experimental and in the large or main cellar, is presently well stocked and completely suitable for different researches. Equipping of the experimental cellar with mini tanks and temperature control system has been significantly supported by the Department of Microbiology of the AFZ. Since the plan is to produce different types of special harvest wines on an annual basis, procurement of a tangential filter that would complete a wine-production process line is planned. Also, the laboratories for ampelometric research and the wine laboratory would also be gradually equipped. The Department intends to procure in the near future a gas chromatograph with mass detector necessary for research into the aromatic and similar components of grapes and wine. These are the state-of-the-art practices in laboratory research and their results are used to design agrotechnical and ampelotechnical practices applied in the vineyards and the wine production processes aimed at achieving the best quality.

Projects Due to the above capacities, the Experiment Station is focal point of numerous researches, some of them interdisciplinary, supported from the MST and MAF-ARC projects: - Genetic Resources of Vitis sp. and Production Systems – MST. - Organic Viticulture on Family Farms MAF–ARC. - Genetic Identification and Protection of Autochthonous Grapevine Varieties MAF–ARC.

- Selection of Autochthonous Yeasts from Croatian Wine-Producing Regions MAF–ARC. - Control of Grapevine Phytoplasmosis in the Republic of Croatia MAF–ARC. - Deacidification of Wines from Autochthonous and Domesticated Cultivars MAF–ARC. Another project proposed on the basis of the MST invitation for applications will also be implemented mostly in this Experiment Station, while application for two other technological projects is in preparation.

Diploma and Master's Theses, Dissertations The results of the above projects and the research conducted at the Department were used in preparation of a number of Diploma and three Master's Theses. Also, the researches currently underway will be used for preparation of two Master's Theses and one Dissertation.

Fruit Production Experiment Station Manager: Assistant Prof. Zlatko Čmelik, PhD – Department Head

Researchers and technical staff Department of Pomology:

Assistant Prof. Zlatko Čmelik PhD; Assistant Prof. Nikola Pavičić PhD; Assistant Prof. Đani Benčić PhD; Boris Duralija MSc; Tomislav Jemrić MSc; Jasmina Družić BSc (junior researcher) and Petar Rošić (farmworker).

Station Area The Experiment Station consists of 25.0 ha of fenced land where the Department of Fruit Production currently has fruit plantation on approximately 2.5 ha, wherefrom about 2.0 ha under the new apple and pear plantation (planted in spring 2002). The remaining land holds a collection of about 100 of apple cultivars and clones (0.1 ha); a trial with the plum rootstocks and cultivars and a collection of plum cultivars (0.2 ha); a trial with different cherry rootstocks and a collection of cherry cultivars (0.2 ha). The plantations should expand in the future so that total surface area under the fruit trees would be about 5 ha.

Equipment Regretfully, the Department of Pomology is only in possession of small machinery (motor cultivator, back-pack sprayer, mowing machine) so when it comes to equipment it has to rely on favors of other departments.

Projects The following projects are implemented at the Experiment Station: - Research into Suitable Rootstocks for Sweet Cherry Growing (funded by MST and joint project with the

Alpine-Adriatic Regional Cooperation Community members). - New Cultivars, Rootstocks and Training Forms of Plum in High Density Planting (funded by MST). - Comparative Research into Training Forms of Slender Spindle and Solax (joint project with the Alpine-

During the reporting period, numerous forums were organized on collaboration, present or future, with the representatives of some colleges covering the same or broader disciplines as we do. We hosted our colleagues from the Veterinary College of the University of Zagreb to discuss collaboration on numerous researches and teaching topics our two colleges share. Further, in order to promote our profession, we presented ourselves to the colleagues from the University of Zagreb and arranged a meeting with the representatives of the Medical School of the University of Zagreb. We shall continue to do so by involving other FAZ staff, which should result in better presentation of our Faculty. We have learned that both our profession and our activities have become more recognizable to our colleagues from other colleges of the University.

On several occasions, we had fruitful discussions with our colleagues from the Forestry College of the University of Zagreb, focused on resolving long-time outstanding issues. We are convinced that these meetings will help us resolve these issues to mutual satisfaction and respect.

We also met with the similar educational institutions from Osijek and Križevci to discuss the topics we share. With the Osijek colleagues we discussed organization of the next Croatian Symposium on Agriculture, and with our peers in Križevci we discussed their development and plans for the future respecting the tradition, since they rely on the support of our Faculty.

We were visited by the Dean of the College of Agriculture of the University of Mostar, and more efficient collaboration of the two colleges was featured on the agenda.

Firmly aware that our task is to promote the role of science in sustainable present and desired future of Croatia and deeply convinced that a national consensus is necessary on the role of science in long-term development, we have convened several meetings with prominent entrepreneurs of the City of Zagreb and Croatia. They clearly indicated their willingness to join us in promotion of science, as the most important national development vehicle, and to apply the scientific results.

FAZ Promotional Activities

FAZ – Annual Report 2001-2002 42

We organized a number of meetings with the representatives of different ministries aimed at presentation of our expert standing on some political developments. We find the meeting with Mr. Zlatko Tomčić, the Parliament Speaker, particularly important.

We have established permanent communication with all the City of Zagreb offices in covering our field of activities (education, agriculture) and with the National Trust in connection with maintenance of the Faculty Estate.

We have certainly not remained within the Croatian borders. During the last months we hosted some foreign delegations, as mentioned in the International Relations Office report.

We have always cherished meeting our pensioners, so we established their day - the first Friday in February. Many of them revisited the Faculty and met again after many years.

FAZ plans to continue its public promotion, considering it a join effort of all FAZ’s employees. Good promotion asks for good scientific references based on quality information. To achieve that, we must recognize the persons with vivid scientific and social creativity and deeply embedded tolerance, persons of broad education and social attitudes, independent and invincible. We must not bypass the gifted, capable and successful ones but should rather be ready to join our forces in fighting the challenges.

Let diligence, excellence, critical mind and readiness to gain new knowledge become our image.

Central Agricultural Library (CAL) Manager: – Vjekoslava Bešlaj, BA

During 2001, the Central Agricultural Library (CAL) continued its activities within the project Croatian Sciences Information System; subsystem: Natural Sciences, supported by the MST. The activities include common efforts in creating the database, monographic and serial publications of 26 university libraries and a joint System catalogue (together with Engineering and Biomedicine). The catalogue is accessible to all users from CAL or at http://prirodo.irb.hr/. The users may search OPAC on-line catalogue of books, journals, master's theses and dissertations kept at CAL, same as the joint catalogue of 15 libraries in CROLIST interface since we participate in its cooperative cataloging.

Through the MAF's project Development of Services to Support Family Farms computers were provided for this purpose.

The users are offered lists of current periodical publications with abstracts and electronic versions of journals at the following addresses:

- www.sciencedirekt.com, - http://link.springer.de/ol/index.htm, - www.interscience.wiley.com, and a list of journals with impact factor is accessible at the following address

- www.liquid2k.com/reference/jip/jip.htm or from CAL in printed form. The Library has 3,173 active members (students, FAZ employees, students of High Agricultural School, general population).

Inter-library exchange enables the CAL to ensure material not in its possession, and members of other libraries to use its material.

In 2001, the MST should have ensured the funds for 156 (approved) international journals, but not all expected moneys were paid into the FAZ account.

In 2001, FAZ was subscribed to 33 Croatian journals, and 15 more were received within the exchange (ACS, proceedings). The CAL is regularly receiving 130 FAO publications being the depositary FAO library, and in return it fulfills all the obligations towards FAO (processing, reports, statistics,...). The total of 205 foreign journals were obtained through exchange. Three or four times a year, CAL informs the FAZ staff on new books.

In 2001, the CAL received 1,100 new copies (580 titles); 380 copies were purchased by FAZ and the rest by MST, or obtained free of charge, through exchange or donations. The Library stocks about 82,000 volumes.

The Agricultural Economics Library (AEL) is support to the scientific research and teaching activities of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology, Department of Farm Management, Department of Marketing in Agriculture (AE Departments), FAZ as a whole, students and postgraduates.

The AEL meets the functional library-keeping requirements because it has the premises for acceptance and processing of incoming material, reading room and a store room.

The AEL, as a reference library, is a technical organizational unit within FAZ. Its activities include build up of collected material, its physical and computer-aided organization, keeping and protection, rendering of information and reference services, dissemination of documentation to AE Departments and complete Faculty staff, students and postgraduates.

FAZ’s IT Activities Professor Vitomir Grbavac, PhD

The document Strategic Guidelines for the FAZ IT System Development until 2005, adopted at the FC, addresses the increasing information-technology challenges facing or to be faced by our institution.

The adopted strategy is directed towards improvement and standardization of the existing computer network and IT infrastructure.

Overview of Computer Hardware at the Faculty

The equipping of the FAZ with the computer hardware started in early nineties and encompassed all organizational units of the Faculty. The hardware procurement was a two-tier process, because a part was procured by the FAZ and ITS departments, while another part was supplied directly by the MST and MAF for scientific research and teaching purposes.

The IT system construction process can be divided into the period until 1997, and that between 1998 and 2002.

The computer hardware installed until 1997 has been or will be written off, while that installed during the period 1998-2002 is still in use.

During the last twelve years, FAZ had about 323 computers, 181 printer, 61 additionally purchased monitor, 23 additionally built in CD drivers, 16 scanners and 7 fax modems (see Table). Of the tabulated equipment, FAZ still has 222 computers, 115 printers, 44 additionally purchased monitors, 19 CD drivers, 12 scanners and 1 modem.

Local Network (LAN) Topology

In early 90s, the FAZ networking with the CARNet system started through an IT cabinet and installation of a DEC computer (modem-based). Soon after the networking was completed, the communication needs of numerous employees and teaching staff grew and multiplied since the use increased of fast growing information services available in the CARNet/Internet communication space.

During the war, the networking process slowed down. But soon after the war, and particularly in the second half of the 90s, intensive construction of the LAN started with support of the ministries and the Faculty.

At the moment, the LAN cross-links all four Faculty buildings and a modem link is established with the Faculty sites that are not networked.

Students' Organization and Activities

Students' Organization and Activities

FAZ Student Assembly Charter

Student Assembly as an Umbrella Student Organization of the University of Zagreb The FAZ Chapter of the Student Assembly has larger student membership. There is yet another students association called SAF. Through the Student Center, the Student Assembly participated is funding and organization of Agronomiade. Further, the Student Assembly also organizes issuing of the school ID cards (X's), and was among the organizers of fruit-tree planting at the Josip Ban Jelačić Experiment Station, Prolom, Glina and of the Farm Animal Cloning forum.

de Natura Journal Every year the Student Assembly invites applications for students’ programmes. A proposal for launching a FAZ students’ jurnal, entitled de Natura, won the last year’s competition. de Natura is the student journal of the FAZ’s Student Assembly Charter.

The de Natura journal is published quarterly, and four issues were published by the end of the reporting period. The journal is edited by twenty odd students. They meet once a week to propose and select topics. Each issue has six sections: Faculty, News, Events, About ..., Culture and Agroinfo.

The Faculty section covers only the topics related to the FAZ. The only section not written by the students is News, since it covers topical issues from different scientific disciplines. The Events section gives announcements of and reports from symposia, lectures, seminars and similar events in the field of agriculture.

Numerous students’ activities at the FAZ are covered in the About... section. The cultural events are reported on in the Culture section. The students find the Agroinfo section the most interesting because it offers information on the exam dates, brief reports from the FC sessions and the Undergraduate Board.

The students preparing the journal attempt to collect useful and interesting information that would otherwise remain unknown to individual students.

Croatian IAAS in Academic Year 2001-2002 During 2002, more than 40 students became members of the IAAS, so this association has for the first time gathered over one hundred members. In November 2001, the representatives of this association were elected for one-year term.

The most important project implemented by IAAS in 2002 was the organization of Agrotourism, an international student seminar held in Pula and Lovran, Croatia, April 22-29, 2002. The seminar had 40 participants, among them 24 foreign students. The lectures were delivered by the FAZ experts. Also, an international project Exchange Week Belgium-Germany-Croatia was implemented and 18 colleagues from Belgium and Germany were our guests in November 2001. They stayed for a week, and were introduced to the Croatian economic, agricultural and cultural resources. Eighteen FAZ’s students returned the visit to the colleges in Leuven, Gent and Bonn in March 2002 .

Within the Exchange Program, three FAZ members visited Belgium, Finland and Switzerland for practical training.

2002 Agronomiade - 7th International Agriculture Students Meeting 2002 Agronomiade, the seventh meeting students of agriculture with international participation was held in Makarska, May 22-25, 2002. The meeting was hosted by the FAZ. The FAZ students were joined by the students of the College of Agriculture of the University of Osijek, Križevci Community College, Požega Community College, Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and Cluj Napoka, Romania. The participants, 240 of them, took part in a quiz show (in General Agronomy, General Livestock Breeding and Soil Science) and sports events: indoor football (M), basketball (M), swimming (M/F) – crawl, breast stroke, backstroke, butterfly, relay, and chess. The students also presented their scientific research reports and their achievements in culture and arts (paintings, sculptures, poems and the like).

The 2002 Agronomiade Opening and Closing ceremonies were made particularly festive by performance of the FAZ students folk dance group, Falkuša Choir, aerobic group and modern dance group.

Achievements of the FAZ Students The FAZ students' achievements during the reporting period were many, particularly in:

- scientific research - culture and art - folk and modern dancing groups, chorus - poetry, prose, sculpture, painting, art photography - quiz shows - sport competitions

Student Extracurricular Activities The students' choir called Falkuša has been set up in pursuit of preservation of the Dalmatian fishermen and farmers’ tradition, by cherishing the genuine Dalmatian song in particular. The Falkuša Chorus has performed in numerous events at and off the FAZ.

An interesting exhibition of the students' art has been set up as one of extracurricular activities.

Construction of 5th and 6th FAZ Buildings

Construction of 5th and 6th FAZ Buildings Construction of 6th FAZ building started in December 1996. This building’s floor area is 5,000 m2, in addition to 500 m2 of floor area raised on top of the 5th building.

The construction was divided into two stages:

The first stage of the project encompassed the construction of the building structure and facade, and the total cost was 20,790,370.14 kunas (HRK). In 2000, the second stage started and its value was 24,372,526.00 kunas.

In 2001, the MST earmarked 8 million kunas in the national budget for construction of the 6th FAZ building. The assets were mainly invested into the construction of the connecting bridge between the 5th and 6th building, and the construction of the third floor of the 5th building. These works finally determined the shape of the 5th and 6th building, making them a single unit.

During the first half of 2002, the 6th building site was developed, including the construction of 55 parking lots and 6 parking lots for disabled persons. The access road to the protruding side of the 6th building was asphalt coated, and the Tvrtka Miloša road was reconstructed (traffic profile expansion to 5.5 m). A new connection to the waterworks was built with considerably larger pipe cross-section to prevent any water shortages in the future. The services installed for the 6th building (water, gas, electricity, fire-fighting, sewage and drainage) are the first step in completing the reconstruction and retrofitting of the FAZ services. In 2002, 11 million kunas was earmarked for the construction of the 6th FAZ building in the national budget.

Another 8 million kunas will be necessary in 2003 for the building to be completed and ready to receive its occupants.

Furnishing of the 5th and 6th according to the interior designs (with the exception of the laboratories) will cost about 6 million kunas.

Furnishing and equipping of the laboratories, along with the practical work classrooms, requires for further 8 million kunas. Therefore, for the structure to be completely finished in the next two to three years, additional 22 million kunas will be necessary.

The FAZ FC Decision from 1996, when the construction started, planned the 6th building for the following:

1 Admistration with pertinent services 2 Department of Plant Nutrition + practical work classroom 3 Department of Soil Science + practical work classroom 4 Department of General Agronomy + practical work classroom 5 Department of Field Crops, Forage & Grassland + practical work classroom 6 Department of Plant Breeding, Genetics, Biometrics and Experimentation + practical work classroom

(at that time it included the present Department of Seed Science and Technology) 7 Department of Soil Amelioration Practical work classroom 8 Two large lecture theatres with 180 and 220 seats, respectively.

Financial Performance

Financial Performance Introduction The financial performance data covers the period of one year (2001) and, in compliance with the legal requirements, they are presented in the Annual Report. However, in order to cover a part of 2002 as well, the second part of this section offers basic indicators for the first quarter of 2002.

FAZ Financial Performance, January 1-December 31, 2001 The indicators from the table show that the FAZ financial performance in 2001 was positive.

Revenues and revenue sources, expenses, revenues less expenses

Item HRK % Revenues from National Budget 41,787,379 65.38 Internally generated revenues 22,122,385 34.62 Total revenues 63,909,764 100.00 Total expenses 59,972,188 Revenues less expenses 3,937,576

Revenues It is obvious that greater portion of the revenues comes from the National Budget (65.38%), and smaller portion is internally generated revenue (34.62%). Important items of the revenues from the National Budget (HRK 41,787,379) are salaries (HRK 28,984,069), material operating costs (HRK 2,984,296) and scientific projects (HRK 5,404,051). Other items include staff allowances, external teaching staff, field trips, scientific equipment, foreign journals, travelling expenses, bonuses and the like.

The internally generated revenues mainly consist of revenues earned on MAF projects (HRK 6,807,704 or 30.77%) and somewhat less the revenues from other expert and technical services (HRK 6,726,324 or 30.41%), so they together make 61.18% of total internally generated revenues. The remaining revenues in the amount of HRK 8,588,357 include money from co-financed scientific projects, services, undergraduate and postgraduate studies and other minor items.

Expenses The highest expense items are salaries (HRK 31,953,642) and material expenses (HRK 6,669,923). These items are partly covered from the National Budget and partly from the internally generated revenues since they are connected with project implementations. Other expenses include travel expenses, service fees, maintenance and other FAZ expenses.

FAZ – Annual Report 2001-2002 50

Page 53: University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture Annual Report · The FAZ management is based on the stipulations on the Institutions Act, Higher Education Institutions Act and the FAZ

Financial Performance

FAZ – Annual Report 2001-2002 51

Financial Performance, January 1-March 31, 2002

Revenues and revenue sources, expenses, status on January 1, 2002

Item HRK % Revenues from National Budget 9.514.342 66.62 Internally generated revenues 4.767.058 33.38 Total revenues 14.281.400 100.00 Total expenses 14.855.168 Initial status, 1/1/2002 3.937.576

The total revenues in the first quarter did not cover total expenses because of inadequate funds inflow from the National Budget. It should be noted that the rates of inflow for material expenses of the FAZ were significantly slower compared to the same period of the previous year (2001). The same trend continued in the second quarter, so by the end of May the MST (National Budget) paid in only one third of the money received in the same period of 2001 for the same purpose.

Equipment Expenses U 2001, FAZ procured different equipment for 3,396,430 kunas, and during the period January 1-March 31, 2002 that amount was 717,613 kunas.

Value of purchased equipment in the respective periods -total and monthly averages, HRK - Period Total Monthly average 1/1-12/31/ 2001 3,396,430 283,036 1/1-3/31/ 2002 717,613 239,204

The equipment procurement rates are usually slower at the beginning of a year. This is due to the procurement procedure (tendering) and co-financing schedule used for spending from the National Budget (through the MST).
