WEEK 1: Be involved in all aspects of the classroom from day 1.

Spend this week becoming acquainted with your classroom and school/program. Read school records for children. Take time to familiarize yourself with curricular and school resources and materials. Observe and talk with your clinical educator* (CE) about:

• The classroom schedule including when you are to arrive and leave. At minimum, this should match your teacher’s required hours,

• Attending all professional development (PD) and school/program activities, including UD coteaching workshops. Ask your CE if you need permission from the administration to attend the PD,

• Meeting with your CE and field instructor* (FI),• Setting times/making plans for meeting daily and weekly to review progress and to

set weekly goals. Coplanning and coreflecting will happen during this time as well,

• How you will exchange information/receive feedback on a daily basis. Some teams keep a notebook for writing each other notes. Others use ‘huddles’ for communicating ideas during a lesson each day,

• What is the best method of communication outside of school hours?• School policies including procedures for fire drills and other emergencies,• Role of families and community members in the classroom, • Curriculum planning and classroom set-up including required curriculum, content

standards, progress reports, individual educational plans, available materials and supplies,

• Classroom management,• Assessment- how does your CE track student progress?• Other teaching duties which you will be expected to participate in or assume,• Review the student teaching assignments that you will be responsible for

throughout this placement. Record questions you and your CE have and discuss with your FI,

• Any other questions or concerns you may have.

IF CHILDREN ARE PRESENT: Spend time interacting with and getting to know all of the children. Oversee/participate in various areas of the classroom.

Page 2: University of Delaware · Web viewFor lesson plans, you will write detailed lesson plans until your FI and CE approve you to move onto the short lesson plan format. WEEK 1: Be involved

Make a point to notice and remember what children’s interests are. How are the children’s individual experiences and cultures reflected in their play and interactions? How does the physical environment support the activities and needs of the children? What skills and traits are being cultivated?

Due:

1. Classroom Schedule: Prepare a schedule outlining the day. Make a list of days that you will not be in session. Talk with your clinical educator. Are there days or times that your FI should not plan to visit? List these.

2. Personal Goals: What would you like to gain from this experience? Thinking back on past placements, what aspects of teaching do you still need to focus most on? Think about coteaching; what would you like to learn in the moment most from your CE? Write goals to share with your CE and FI.

3. Introductory Letters: Write a letter to the families in your classroom and an additional one to the program/school staff you will work with as colleagues over

the course of your placement introducing yourself. Think about what you know about the community, school program, and your families when writing this letter. What do you think they would like/need to know about you and your plans for the next twelve weeks? What “style” will best convey this information to this group of people? Have your final draft APPROVED by your CE and FI before sending it home. Some schools will also require that the letter be approved by administration. Please ask your CE for your school’s policy.

4. Class and School Profile: Complete the Class and School Profile form found on the Canvas website under Files-Student Teaching Assignments-Class and School Profile Form. This information will be used in the upcoming weeks to plan. It is important that this piece (especially information related to the children) be thorough and complete).

5. Safety Document: Complete the safety document found on the Canvas website under Files-Student Teaching Assignments-Safety Document. You can take a picture of these policies and paste the pictures onto the document instead of retyping the procedures.

6. Lesson Plan 1: Write 1 detailed lesson plan to be implemented during week 2. Use information from your coplanning session and be mindful of coteaching in your construction of the plan. Detailed Lesson Plan templates can be found on the Canvas website under Resources-Student Teaching Assignments-Lesson Plans-ECE Detailed Lesson Plan. ALL PLANS MUST BE APPROVED BY CE AND SUBMITTED TO FI FOR FEEDBACK BY THE DUE DATE. **CEs reserve the right to revoke your ability to implement any lessons that have not been approved in advance.

7. Reflection 1: List three significant events that occurred this week. Briefly describe them. Choose one event to “discuss” in detail. Using the questions below and the resources on Sakai as a guide, analyze the situation that you chose. What did you learn about the program, your CE, and about yourself?

The purpose of reflection is to help you conscientiously examine at least some of the thinking, actions and responses that occur in the classroom in order to gain a better understanding (What influenced or impacted the success of an activity? How well did this situation/interaction align with your philosophy? Etc.). By actively thinking about and examining situations/experiences that occur, it is hoped that you will use this insight to improve your teaching. Include in your reflection how you intend to use what you have learned from this experience in

Page 3: University of Delaware · Web viewFor lesson plans, you will write detailed lesson plans until your FI and CE approve you to move onto the short lesson plan format. WEEK 1: Be involved

the future. Reflections should be submitted to FI by the given due date and THESE DO NOT NEED TO BE SHARED WITH THE CE.

See “REFLECTION GUIDANCE” and other helpful documents on Canvas for information regarding expectations for this assignment in future weeks. This can be found on under Files-Resources.

WEEK 2: Coteach 1st lesson

Coteach Lesson 1. If children were not present last week, they should be this week. Get to know the children and the classroom and look at and notice children’s play interest. How and when do children incorporate reading and writing into their play activities? Are there differences in children’s approaches and abilities? What factors influence these differences? How are the children using math and science skills in the classroom? Again note differences in abilities and approaches. What about socially and physically? Are you noticing friendship patterns? Personality differences? Differences in how children approach school and learning? Notice fine and gross motor needs and abilities. Spend time overseeing/supervising each area of the classroom. Begin to coplan for and lead additional activities. Discuss Target Children and the Core Learning Assignment with your CE. Complete the Bi-Weekly Conference Sheet with your CE found on the Canvas site under Files-Resources.Due:1. Classroom and School Observation Form: Complete the classroom and school

observation form found on the Canvas website under Files-Student Teaching Assignments-Classroom Observation Form

2. Lesson Plans 2, 3, and 4: Complete 3 detailed lesson plans in a variety of content/developmental areas to implement in week 3. You MUST use at least TWO DIFFERENT COTEACHING APPROACHES in these three plans. For example, if you use Teach and Assist for Lesson 2 and 3, you may not use this approach for Lesson 4.3. Reflection 2: See “Reflection Guidance” on Canvas for more details. Make sure to keep track of reflecting on the expected topics.4. Anecdotal Notes: Observe all children and record brief, meaningful, and objective

notes on each child’s ability. Plan to take a minimum of one note per child each week. Share the information you collect with your CE and plan to share your collection system and the data you collect with your FI, who will check these notes for several weeks during their visits and as needed.

5. Identify 2 Target Children: Select 2 children to track closely for the remainder ofyour placement. Select children with varying needs, abilities, and dispositions. Using the program’s report card/progress report/data collection methods, observe and collect data in all areas of development on these two children for the remainder of your placement. You will be expected to complete a progress report on both children that will include a summary that would be able to be respectfully and professionally shared with families at the completion of your placement.

WEEK 3: Coteach Lessons 2, 3, and 4

Coteach your three lessons that you coplanned last week. Discuss performance with your CE. What were the strengths/weaknesses of the activity? Tell two things you liked about the activity. What do you wish you had done differently? How would you change this lesson? What did children learn/gain? What did you learn about the children? How
