In today’s business world, change is the only constant. If individuals want to keep

pace, both locally and globally, they need to be a part of that change.

When you make the decision to build on your business experience, the University

of Utah David Eccles School of Business Executive MBA Program offers you the

gold standard in MBA programs. Our finely-tuned Executive Program provides the

general management essentials needed to engineer one’s success in the face of

the shifting tides of the business world.

For 21 months, program participants have a unique opportunity to interact and

study with their peers—seasoned business professionals with a desire to keep

moving forward. They include senior-level executives in a variety of fields, such as

finance, healthcare, information technology, and manufacturing. Students learn

from renowned professors at one of the best business schools in the western

United States and gain an international perspective on the complex challenges

facing companies today.

The Executive MBA Program offers a part-time structure that allows participants

to earn exactly the same degree as our full-time MBA students. With our weekend

class schedule, students can combine study and career in a way that substantially

enhances the learning experience. From week one, students are able to apply

the concepts learned in the classroom to their workplace and can discuss current

business issues and challenges with colleagues and faculty.

POSITION YOURSELF FOR SUCCESS

#1 in Utah • #4 in the West • #22 IN THE U.S.

“The Executive MBA program has

given me an improved perspective

on my career. The professors

provided real world experience

along with their academic expertise

and the discussions allowed fellow

students to contribute their own

insights and experiences. In short,

we had more than 60 teachers to

learn from. The program’s design

creates a strong bond among each

class which is carried over to other

classes and alumni. The program

has opened my eyes to the world

and given me the awareness,

knowledge and skills needed to be

successful and to be a better person

both in business and in life.”

“The technical aspects of running

a business are taught in most MBA

programs, however, the University

of Utah Executive MBA is different

than just any other MBA program.

It brings together top leaders who

challenge each other, driving the

best results possible. This creates

a training ground for tomorrow’s

leaders, and the program’s end

effect is the training of masters in

both the technical and soft skills

required to lead with willing and

enthusiastic followers.”

Class of 2014

The Executive MBA Program is designed to provide experienced professionals with

even higher levels of leadership, analysis, interpersonal, and strategic planning

skills. Among many other assets, graduates leave with a finely-honed ability to

create both visions and solutions, and the knowledge needed to implement them

within the context of an organization.

The unique format and extensive learning community provided by our program

attracts a talented and diverse group of individuals. A typical class might include

managers from consulting firms, financial groups, manufacturing companies,

service industries, and the health care community. Participants will be able to share

knowledge and learn from peers in accounting, human resources and information

technology, as well as marketing experts and variety of other professionals. This

multifaceted group of peers, combined with our faculty—many of whom are

leaders in their fields—help equip students to assess not only today’s business

problems but those of 5, 10 and 20 years into the future.

Our program offers depth and breadth in a range of disciplines, varied teaching

styles, and exceptionally intelligent, high-performance students. It demands

independent thinking. It is rigorous and challenging. Our students gain a business

education that goes beyond general principles and technical skills. They gain an

education that prepares them to be leaders in their organizations and industries.

HEre’s How it Works

• Through our unique schedule, students continue moving forward in their

careers uninterrupted. With biweekly Friday and Saturday classes, students can

be ready to apply the skills they learn in class immediately in the workplace. Two

one-week intensive sessions and an international field study provide students

with an in-depth learning experience and international perspective.

• Because students will make a substantial commitment to the Executive MBA

program--an average of 15 to 20 hours outside of class each week--our staff

focuses on streamlining all administrative concerns.

• Before the first day of class, the Executive MBA staff has taken care of course

registration, textbooks and class materials, and parking permits. The Executive

MBA laptops will be loaded and ready to go; students have easy access to printing

and copying on class days and can count on breakfast, lunch and snacks. We

want our students to focus on gaining their education, so we are committed to

treating our participants like the business professionals they are.

• All participants have six-plus years of professional and/or managerial experience,

and have strong potential for senior-level leadership positions in their current

organizations or in their future jobs.

• Many participants are sponsored by their employers. Many are also self-

sponsored. These motivated professionals and entrepreneurs enroll knowing

that their investment will pay for itself many times over.

• Admission to the program is competitive and is based on several factors detailed

in admissions materials enclosed with this brochure, and online at www.emba.

utah.edu. A GMAT/GRE substitution is available.

“Following the EMBA program

I made the decision to leave a

lucrative C-Suite position and jump

into an entirely new venture. The

EMBA strengthened the skills that I

already possessed and helped me

gain new areas of expertise that I am

employing in my current activities.

Financial rewards are important,

but the opportunity to expand your

business vocabulary and establish

new norms of thinking are life

changing. My learning experience

in the EMBA better prepared me to

take on the challenging work I’m

doing today.”

COURSEWORK(Subject to change)

THE CURRICULUMA high-level general management program designed for experienced managers,

the Executive MBA curriculum is a cohort program, with all participants

taking the same courses throughout the 21-month program. The courses

deliver in-depth knowledge of business fundamentals, analytical skills, creative

solutions, and vision that extends beyond current employment, industry, and

region. The faculty teach how to apply analytical methods and conceptual

tools from finance, statistics, behavioral science, and other academic disciplines

to solve complex business problems and improve leadership skills. Students

balance problem-solving with broad perspectives and conceptual skills. In the

end, they will be prepared to create solutions and implement them within the

context of an organization.

Our faculty continually update their courses to reflect the latest thinking in

their fields and the critical issues facing the marketplace. They are the men

and women who write the theory and practical solutions that will become

industry standard.

“The David Eccles School of Business

Executive MBA Program is a life

experience. In addition to being an

extremely high quality program in its

own right, it provides an opportunity

to interact with other top executives of

common direction, ability, and position.

The friends you make in this program

will literally last a lifetime, enriching

both your personal and professional life.

If the opportunity presents itself, no one

should pass this up.”

THE INTERNATIONAL ADVANTAGE

Geographic borders have evaporated in the modern business world, bringing

new challenges and opportunities. The Executive MBA program embraces

this reality by weaving a global focus throughout the entire program. Faculty

members strive to incorporate global case studies and research projects in

each class. Courses like International Finance and Managing in the Global

Economy - held in Vancouver, B.C. - help students to think beyond their own

industries and markets.

The 21-month program culminates with an International Field Study, where

students get the chance to go behind-the-scenes at major multinational

companies, gaining an insider’s view of global best practices, policies and

procedures. During the International Field Study, students tour renowned firms

and have direct contact with high-level executives and government officials.

Previous Executive MBA classes have visited Chile, China, Argentina, Turkey,

Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Japan.

The Executive MBA Program is designed to help students understand the

current business environment from every perspective, and to position their

company - and themselves - to effectively meet every challenge on the horizon.

Page 12: University of Utah Executive MBA

THE PEOPLEOur students, faculty, alumni, and administrative staff are the forces behind our

Executive MBA Program’s reputation, quality, and real-world results.

Throughout the program, participants will have the opportunity to build close

relationships with faculty and fellow students. Each class is divided into study groups

that meet face-to-face and electronically to work on assignments or prepare for

upcoming classes. These groups are a vital source of support, assistance, different

perspectives, and camaraderie. The week-long intensive sessions further provide

opportunities to make contacts with executives in a variety of fields.

FAR-REACHING STUDENT NETWORK

As a David Eccles School of Business student, program participants become part of a

far-reaching network of over 20,000 businessmen and women. Because the Executive

MBA program attracts the most diverse, experienced group of professionals in the

state, and students move through the program as a unified cohort, they have ample

opportunity to forge close relationships and learn from each other. Once a student

begins their Executive MBA journey, they enter into a lifetime partnership with the

school. They have the opportunity to connect with this network, continually develop

new relationships and benefit from lifelong opportunities for learning, career

building and personal development.

HIGHLY RANKED FACULTY

Faculty of the David Eccles School of Business hold Ph.D.’s from the most prestigious

colleges and universities in the world, including Northwestern University’s Kellogg

School, Stanford Business School, University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School,

Harvard Business School, Duke University’s Fuqua School, the University of Michigan’s

Ross School, UCLA’s Anderson School, and the London School of Economics.

Most have had significant business management experience. They interface with

the business community as consultants or board members and consistently publish

in top research journals. Their research is cited in mainstream business publications

such as The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Barron’s.

“The caliber of fellow students

in the program far exceeded my

expectations. Entrepreneurs,

C-level executives, doctors,

nurses, programmers, marketers

and almost every other industry

in-between come together to

create an eclectic group that yields

thought-provoking discussions and

an incredible network of colleagues

EssayPlease write a one page essay addressing the following topics:

• Explain your decision and motivation for applying to the Executive MBA program.

• Why do you feel you are a strong candidate?• How will earning an MBA influence your career intentions?

The essay is to be single-spaced, typed, and may not exceed one page.

Current ResumePlease provide a detailed chronological career history giving dates, employers, nature of your duties, responsibilities, salaries, and other pertinent information.

Letter of Recommendation and Form

The applicant’s direct supervisor must complete both the recommendation form and write the letter of recommendation. The letter should discuss how long and in what capacity the recommender has known the applicant, as well as the applicant’s strengths, weaknesses, personal character, and potential for success in the Executive MBA program.

The recommendation form and letter can be completed online by inputting the recommender’s contact details in the online application. Alternatively, recommenders can email or mail their completed form and letter to the Executive MBA program office. See the following page for a copy of the recommendation form.

InterviewOnce your completed application is received, you will be contacted for an interview with our Program Director or Associate Dean. The interview helps assess your skills and motivation, and allows for additional character insight as part of the admission process.

GMAT/GREThe GMAT/GRE examination is waived in most cases depending on an individual’s undergraduate GPA, graduate GPA, and work experience. The Executive MBA Program Director cannot authorize the final waiver until we have received all required application materials, and conducted an interview. If you would like to waive the GMAT, we encourage you to turn in your application materials as early as possible to expedite the process.

PrerequisitesEntering students must have completed college algebra. Other factors considered to meet the algebra requirement are scores on the quantitative section of the GMAT, calculus or trigonometry, and work experience. Students are expected to have strong skills in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint software.

International AdmissionsQuestions regarding international applicants should be directed to the University of Utah International Student Admissions Office at 801-581-3091. All international student applications must be received by the International Graduate Admissions Office no later than April 1.
